A short preview of the god of war, the god of magic, and the god of thieves perhaps? :)

I was starting this thread because the reaction of my players finally cinvinced me to stop the STAP and start the RotRAP. At the moment we are collecting ideas for characters. One player wants to run a gnome illusionist, another one a halfling rogue/sorcerer.
As we speak of "downtime", will there be enough to satisfy the item crafting gnome and not give him a disadvantage in comparison to the sorcerer?

As Mr. Jacobs gave a clear answer, I am convinced that the sorcerer is good as she is. But what about the d6 hit die? Perhaps the edge the class needs...

BTW: Next to these two characters there will be an elf fighter (spiked chain wielder), a dwarven cleric (he doesn't like the six gods from the blog!?!) and a dwarven ranger (giant slayer).

I would still play the wizard for the great spell selection, the faster spell progression and the Item Creation feats. Especially since the introduction of Reserve-feats the advantage of more spells per day shrinks.

At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft and The Magician's Guild by Trudi Canavan.

(I've posted it before, but I think the boards took it!)

The sorcerer always seemed to me underpowered in comparison to the wizard. So I was tinkering with the idea to make them equal by giving him bonus feats, too.

The wizard receives Scribe Scroll on first level and another one on 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th level. At each such opportunity, she can choose a metamagic feat, an item creation feat, or Spell Mastery.

I thought about granting the sorcerer either a Bloodline-feat as described in the Dragon Compendium Vol. 1 or the corresponding magazines. Later on he would gain a bonus feat on 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th level. At each such opportunity, she can choose a metamagic feat or another Bloodline-feat.

For example a sorcerer with dragon blood in his veins would get Draconic Bloodline on 1st, Draconic Sight on 5th, Power in the Blood on 10th and Quicken Spell on 15th, Kin Mastery on 20th level.

Of course the same could be done with the Heritage-feats from Wizards of the Coast, but of late I don't like to touch those books.

What do you say, would this make the class overpowered?

Interesting question. My money is on the second one.

EP Healer thank you very much for your excellent summaries! One of the best threads/posts at all.

But you mentioned dwarves being the topic in the last chat, what was said about them? Please let me know.

Great! Pazuzu is surely one of the best demon princes!!!

The hardest decision I have to make this year is wether to continue STAP or switching to RotRAP. Savage Tide is surely the best campaign I have ever run, it has simply everything! But I am running it in Eberron and at the moment I don't want to have contact to anything from Wizards! I don't want to read their novels, I don't want to study their rulebooks, I don't want to run their adventures and I don't want to put my time into a setting those own. My feelings are perhaps not that rational or reasonable, but I am that frustrated that a company stops the production of products that are of high quality and sell good, in favor of products that are of lower quality to make more money. I know there has been a lot of this topic these days, but that's the way I see it.

IMHO Pathfinder is the way to go! If the quality is the same as in Dragon and Dungeon, and I bet it will increase, it is the best the industry has to offer. As I mentioned in other threads: the more Paizo I consumed the more Greyhawk I wanted, but as my players never found an entry to this world we missed that one.
Pathfinder would give us the chance to experience everything from the beginning and as Mr. Mona and Mr. Jacobs will make the major decisions (AFAIK) it will be some kind of Greyhawk reborn. Actually my players are quite interested into it. One already got a subscription, another will surely buy the first issue to see if it's any good for him and the others love the things I tell them about the blogs.
As we only come together very seldomly to play it would take us two more years to finish STAP and it wouldn't be the same starting RotRAP.

What a hard decision!

Well I simply don't know that many issues. The most useful to me yet (of the latest "edition" of Dragon starting with issue #323) is #328!

But the best issue... A tough question. Perhaps I have to read them again!

My first (English) one was #272! Before that I read the German one, but the production of it stopped and I had to look for an alternative.
#272 had it all Tiamat and Bahamut, the Secret Library of Vecna, a preview of 3Eand of course a dragon on its cover!

An evil-campaign isn't a thing I would like to run, but some of my players would love it for sure! They thought long and hard when Rowyn Kellani offered them a partnership. But because for metagaming reasons they denied and attacked. They thought I will break down in tears if they chose the dark side. AHAHA those fools! I simply had to tell them that it REALY was an option! MUAHAHAHA!!!

Talking about connections between the deities, could it be that Erastil is the old/first god of civilization and Abadar the new/second of the "same" portfolio?
Old Deadeye is the god of farming , hunting, trade, and family; the basis of civilization. The Master of the First Vault is the god of cities, wealth, merchants, and law; cities grew from tiny settlements, the work was divided and resulted in specialists, one such expert was the profession of the merchant who made trade her expertise. The grown society needed a law to govern its more complex details and workings.

Could Erastil be the father of Abadar?

Will we see a blog of the little changes to the core races soon? My players are asking for it. (I don't want to sound too blunt, but I am just a bit upset to tell them that there is no more information on gnomes, dwarves and halflings in Varisia, yet.)

No, never was our intent to weaken Paizo by selling their products.
As Wormy and F2K just said, our intention was to make Pathfinder known on the German market. But honestly I think that the market for a translation of the whole Pathfinder product line (including GameMastery modules) would be simply to small. The translation of Hollow's Last Hope should have worked as incentive to attract more people to the English originals.

Although a German Pathfinder would be AWESOME!

I know this should be posted in the Wish-list thread but I wish there was an infamous assins guild, a wizard guild and such classics!

Wow, just had a look at it, thanks a lot! I missed the point that it is Eberron specific but still it's a great read and I can use the rumors.

Great you like it!

Filge from The Whispering Cairn was a great low-level BBEG, he got the PCs hating him on first sight!

But of course Vanthus Vanderboren is my favorite villain. He has got a nice background story revealed bit by bit throughout the STAP and he "evolves" from encounter to encounter. The PCs hated him and haven't had to see him at all, his mocking comments before he locked them in the smuggler tunnels were enough!

Please tell us so!

Well, what I don't like is the format of the TACTICS line.

A line above and below is like an eye-catcher and for mee it looks like a new entry starts, for another keyed entry. If you do line above and below for a headline or the headline of an entry like 1. The Kobolds Kings Throne Room, that woule be fine. Tactics should just be bold, and maybe capitalized...

I have to second this.

BTW Dryder, if you are still interested in translating Hollow's Last Hope please let me know your email address.

As far as I know you are an architect already working, I am just a student of architecture and know what you are talking about! :(

Would be great to add you to the mailing list I am typing at the moment. BTW Oliver I need yours, too.

This would be great Dryder and Oliver! But I hope Paizo is interested as well!

Me too! I'm running this right now and this might be very helpful. Could you send it to J (Punkt) Matzke (at) gmx (Punkt) net ??? Thanks!

You get it when I am at home. But you are aware that it is Eberron specific?

I fear I would need your email address Lautlos!

@Oliver von Spreckelsen: Well actually this was my intent, creating a way to "hurt" the PCs by calling their home like this.

-fleck originated from the "-fleck" in "Marktfleck" (marketplace), but of course we'll have to wait until there is more information on the town. But yes, somehow it sounds strange. Anyway I like your suggestions!

@Lautlos: Of course this would be simple, for my taste a bit too simple and I (speaking of simplicity) simply don't like English words in my game. It is not that I don't like the English language which is beautiful and I would love to play in an English game to learn it properly, but I can't imagine Tolkien in German with a Rivendale in it. IMHO destroys the atmosphere.

Hollow's Last Hope is a free adventure and prequel to The Crown of the Kobold King. I am searching for volunteers to translate it into German to further the "German" interest into Pathfinder. Of course we would need an OK from Paizo, but I think it would be worth the effort.

So far Dryder and Oliver von Spreckelsen are on board (or would be). Wormy, Stebehil interested?

Hey, but seriously, why shouldn't we translate it into German? It is a free download as far as I know and if you gave us (German Paizo Fanboys and Fangirls) the OK, we could translate it, perhaps advertise it on THE German D&D-website (www.dnd-gate.de) and get some new customers for Pathfinder/GameMastery products.

Also see "Translating the RotRAP" thread on these lovely boards.

You bet I'm interested in. Will be some time til we come to the "Sea Wyvern's Wake" but I do so like this adventure that I'll take everything I can get :)

Check your PMs Celeste! :)

WormysQueue wrote:
Right at the moment I'm thinking about translating James Jacob's Pathfinder Blog to post it at the Gate (and hopefully to generate some interest about the Pathfinder series in our german fellas).

Of course you can count me in this regard, if I can do something to help.

Perhaps I should have asked before translating the Goblin Song as well. :(

The new monsters are really cool!

Especially the Attic Whisperer, the Giant Gecko and the Sandpoint Devil!!!
Can't wait to be the drunkard who tells the heroes the story of the Sandpoint Devil in their favorite tavern.

WormysQueue wrote:
btw, since I'm to translate parts of the Books anyway, expect me to join in any related discussion.

GREAT news!!! I hope we can inspire some love for Pathfinder over in the Gate. (www.dnd-gate.de)

"WormysQueue wrote:
But as a matter of fact, I'm quite happy not to have to translate something on the "Age of Worms" or "Savage Tides" line, as far as titles are concerned ;)

As far as I know you are running "Age of Worms" in the Gate and "Savage Tide" at the table both set in Eberron. I do too run STAP in Eberron and have described the journey to the IoD during SWW to my group via email. If you are interested... Perhaps you can use some of it for your own descriptions. Also I did a rumors table concerning the unknown enemy on board.

If you are interested tell Saal or leave a message here. If not happy gaming anyway!

I began playing D&D in the Realms and have done so the first five years. The more I read the more I realized that EVERYTHING has been "fixed" somewhere, be it novel or sourcebook, adventure or online article. There was no room for my own ideas. So I got frustrated and sought for something else.
I finally found Eberron. What a great setting! I wrote some small adventures in it myself, but as I turned older my spare time grew shorter as was the supply of well done modules. I began looking for good adventures and found them, of course in Dungeon! The Eberron modules were good stuff, but I fell in love with Maure Castle, the Adventure Paths and somehow with the world of Greyhawk.
It was this community that talked (or wrote) about it and the adventures that simply felt right. But there was more than that:
Information on this world was somehow hard or harder to come by and my players haven't found an entrance yet. But besides these adventures there was room for my imagination. Perhaps it was the lack of canon, but I never had the feeling of toe tipping like in the Realms or the somewhat artificial taste of some bits of Eberron (whick is still a GREAT setting!!!).

So I haven't started with the pink box or something and never had the experience like "hey Expedition to Castle Ravenloft brings up old memories", but I can second that Varisia has the potential to become my or our Greyhawk.

We have hardly translated the first song and those pesky goblins won't stop writing new ones! No, a really nice start IMHO and thanks a lot for participating in this discussion. Hopefully this thread will result in more German interest in Pathfinder!

Most of the names in the RotRAP are "fantasy names" and do not need to be translated, but there are others like Sandpoint or Riddleport. It needs the "backdrops" to tell for sure, but here is my try for the small coastal town where it all starts: Sandfleck.

And although we know pretty few of them, I tried to translate the titles of the modules, too. (Definetely to early, but patience isn't one of my virtues)

#1 Burnt Offerings = "Verbrannte Opfergaben" or "Verbranntes Süneopfer" which would contain a connection to sins, but sound wrong to me.

#2 Skinsaw Murders = tricky as it surely connects to the method the killers used to tidy up lovely Sandpoint a bit.

#3 Hook Mountain Massacre = tricky as well as we do know as good as nothing about these mountains yet. perhaps "Das Hakenberg-Massaker" or "Das Beisserberg-Massaker".

#4 Fortress of Stone = simple and simply tricky, perhaps "Die Festung aus Stein" or "Die Steinerne Festung".

#5 Sins of the Saviors = "Die Sünden der Erretter" or "Die Sünden der Retter", again we will have to wait until we know whose sins those are in that title.

#6 The Towers of Xin-Shalast = "Die Türme Xin-Shalasts" oder "Die Türme von Xin-Shalast"

Well it will take some time, do it right but together...

Helped a lot! Thanks!!!

Feels so good to hear this from you, Lilith!

Truly amazed by Pathfinder in general and Rise of the Runelords in particular, I intend to translate some of it into my mothertongue. First things first so I started with the Goblin Song!

Chase the baby, catch the pup,
Bonk the head to shut it up!

Knochen (werden) gebrochen, Fleisch gefressen,
Wir die Goblins du das Essen!

The two lines I haven't translated yet are verrry tricky, at least for me. Any suggestions? What can do better, what would you do different?

Thanks in advance.

James Jacobs wrote:
Sin magic is arcane, since it's basically a variant on wizard specialists.

Thanks a lot Mr. Jacobs, but this will disappoint my player aiming for cleric turned dark side. :(

In the beginning it sounded not that intriguing to me neither, but now I can't hardly wait for it.

Sin Magic: divine or arcane?
Sounds pretty neutral to me, but then again Karzoug is a wizard.

As far as I know the Pathfinders are an organization similiar to the Harpers, Seekers and Wayfinders. But does it have any tendencies regarding alignment? IMHO For example the Harpers tend to good, the Seekers to evil and the Wayfinders are for the most part neutral (of course dramatically simplified). So do the Pathfinders tend to good? Could there be some traitorous individuals within their ranks? What class is the typical member?

Oh to wait until August/September is so hard!

I confess! But stop torturing me with a long waiting period for it!

I wish there were a Pathfinder-DM screen and character sheets!

Who is the god of Paladins? (blunt but I want to know)

Do it Celeste... er WormysQueue! Subscribe to the cause!

We have seen a couple of threads about new (or "old") monsters, but as I talked to my players they asked me about PC races. I consider the core races from SRD granted, but will there be new ones, too?

Good start! Sound pretty cool in my ears.

Everything concerning our new AP is of interest to me, but the follwing the most:

Adventures
New world
Bestiary
Deities and villains appendices
Character development appendices
Pathfinder's Journal
How to contribute

But which I voted for is...

Wait isn't this a secret poll after all?

I still don' understand why my avatar's name doesn't tell I'm a Charter Subscriber. :(

We could start a list and pray the authors will participate!

Desna, Goddess of Dreams and Travel

?, Goddess of Monsters

...

Are the core gods (Pelor, Wee Jas, etc.) OGL?

Mr. Jacobs answered this in another thread, the core deities are part of the Greyhawk pantheon and thus owned by the greedy Wizards.

Peruhain of Brithondy wrote:
And, whatever the answer to question one, will the Pathfinder setting be developing its own set of deities and religions unique to that setting?

I think so as two new deities are mentioned in the previews.

Peruhain of Brithondy wrote:
A third question: what about demon lords, archdevils, and celestial paragons, along with the outer planes? Are these OGL and will Pathfinder be adopting the standard "great wheel" setup for the outer planes, or developing its own?

Yes, what about these?

I vote for Eva Widermann! Although the artwork of STAP is great, somehow I miss her pics.
