I just noticed that the XP totals were off for the forest and rockslide hyrens. The forest Hyren should be worth 6,400 XP and the Rockslide Hyren should be worth 3,200 XP.

Let me know what you think of this.

Subvert (Sp): The darkbreed hyren can attempt to subvert another hyren 4 times per day. This ability functions identically to Dominate Monster but can only be used against creatures of the dragon type. The targeted dragon must make a DC 22 Willpower saving throw to avoid the effects of this ability. If the target makes the saving throw then it is immune to that particular darkbreed hyren's Subvert ability for 24 hours.

Darkbreed hyrens are perhaps the most reviled and hated breed of hyren in the Moonlands. This is principally because of their ability to mentally control other hyrens and force them to do their bidding. The original darkbreed hyrens were created when Core magi stole the eggs of a monarch hyren and exposed them to the evils of The Core, thus twisting and warping them into the creature they are today. Darkbreed hyrens often find service as mounts for high ranking Core nobles.

Howard is a less suave, more horny Tony Stark. Raj's awkwardness and lack of ability to relate to romantic partners reminds me of Hank Pym. I would argue that Leonard is more like Mr. Fantastic than Sheldon, instead I nominate Sheldon for Doctor Doom. :)

Playing favorites will not be a problem. Two of the players are guys I have thrown dice with before, but that's it. One of the others is the DM for our weekly D&D Encounters game, and another is a girl who just started showing up to Encounters this week and is joining because she wants to play a catfolk character. The other three players are friends of one of the first two, but I have only communicated with them on-line.

So starting next week, I will be running a campaign for seven players. I have never run a game for a group that big, and I have only played in one group that is that size. That group had twelve players and that seemed rather unwieldy. So what I want to know is how would you run a game for a group that big, and just how big is too big?

Ice Stride (Ex): Iceberg hyren's do not have to make an acrobatics check when moving at more than half speed, running, or charging on ice.

Iceberg hyrens prowl the cold polar regions of the Moonlands. Living in small packs like orcas or wolves, they share traits of both creatures. They are equally at home on land or on water, and usually lair in sea caves that can only be easily accessed from the ocean. Iceberg hyrens are absolutely fearless and will attack opponents who are much bigger and stronger than they are. In the words of one observer “it likes to fight foes of huge size and have taken down some that are truly titanic.”

Spoiler:
I also like that we are getting to see more of goblinoid culture. Most people would never think to include things like goblin jewelers and goldsmiths. Goblins need a better PR firm.

Hilarious

If you don't mind me adding a question, how many people here are from Idaho?

Hulk refers to Hulk in third person because it makes Hulk feel like princess.

As I go on I will link pictures of each card to the entry so you can see the hyren in question. Here are the links for the first two:

Thank you. I will do more as time permits. I really need to figure out how to duplicate the darkbreed hyren's Subvert ability.

Sorry, no. As was pointed out up thread, The United States does not have a Parliament and Congress has never addressed the wardrobe malfunction incident. The FCC did fine CBS for the incident but because they found that it was intentional, not accidental. Nor did America burn any CDs or DVDs, a small but vocal intolerant minority did. And America does not believe such a thing about Amsterdam, people in America might but the country does not. All of the above statements display the same intolerance and bigotry towards America and it's inhabitants as you are trying to portray Americans as being.

Rockslide hyrens are a breed that lives in the mountains of the Moonlands particularly the Kyber's Teeth region. They have rough skin that looks like it is composed of rock and soil. They are known for being ill tempered and most people would rather avoid them than deal with them. When they choose to deal with other beings they can be quite charming and diplomatic.

I really loved the Magi-Nation CCG, particularly the innovative and interesting monsters that populated the world. Of particular interest to me were the hyrens, which were the Moonland version of dragons. So I am taking this opportunity to do some conversion work on them. So here is the first one, the forest hyren from Naroom.

Forest hyrens are the guardians of the forest. They move through the primeval woodlands of the Moonlands with great stealth seeking any threats to the natural balance. They have a particular hatred for anything related to the Core, especially darkbreed hyrens because of their ability to control other hyrens.

Yeah... turns out, a tanuki with a giant bulge in his pants would cause more problems for us than it would solve, since we're an American company after all... :-(

That said... the tanuki DOES have a slam attack that he can use when his hands are full with weapons. How that slam attack looks when he attacks, we leave up to the GMs of the world.

And yes, the third one is a ki-rin. And not a weird looking one—just one we wanted to look different than the one that's been in D&D all these years (we generally try to put our own spin on monsters we present who have long traditions in D&D).

Glad they left the "slam" attack in, but it still pisses me off how devs are censoring themselves more and more to appease the bible belt.

Where does it say they are trying to appease the Bible belt? We would not be seeing devils, demons, daemons, daemonds, etc if that was the case.

I hope I like the design Pumyra, I liked her old design better then the old version of Cheetara. Now the new version of Cheetara that is a different story.

Also Pumyra gets a story arch that focuses on her near the end of the first season I believe.

Can you point us to a source for this information?

Also imagine how much different the context of that section would be if the teacher had been male.

One thing I am really confused on, and maybe I just missed the episode that explained it, but why is Panthro so knowledgable about technology? I was under the impression that the 'Cats had turned their back on it and that Lion-O was considered at least a little wierd because of his interest in it.

I think it would be more cool if he was infused with the stuff of the astral plane and can just regenerate them by thinking about them, or turn them into any weapons he could imagine.

Lion-O will probably end up getting into a strong friendship with another female character of some sort, and something I noticed:

In the Episode where Lion-O was sent back through the Book of Omens to relive the Uprising/Betrayal against Mum-Ra, the Panther-woman was obviously more than just a friend to his ancestor. But the Cat Tribe has an iron-clad Law that only Lions may rule, which is one of the main reasons why Tigra was continously blocked from becoming the Heir, despite his many 'victories' over Lion-O.

Did she die in the crash? I am thinking she might actually turn up sooner or later, having been placed in status inside a capsule of some kind to recover from her injuries and being left behind due to MaGuffin-related shenanigans. The Group wakes her up, she sees Lion-O, shenanigans. Or at least, that's my Head-Cannon.

Another possibility is that Pumyra will show up as a love interest for Lion-O in this new incarnation. We have already seen Lynxo and I am hoping that we see Bengali soon as Tigra's long lost brother. Anything is possible.

The article in question is online here:

The Esapist

It took me a single google search (on "Greg Tito Mike Mearls Interview Playtest") to find it.

Okay lets start with this. In a forum such as this, if you put a statement out there and say it was from such and such an article, the burden is on you to provide the source. That is why most scholarly journals and all courts will reject any unsourced material. In persuasive writing the onus is on the persuader to provide the evidence; it is not on the pursuaded to go an find it.

Adamantine Dragon wrote:

This is not some barroom conversation related over a beer to a stranger.

This is an interview, by a reporter published in a magazine that presumably believes it has some journalistic standards. The bolded, italicized section above is known in journalistic lingo as an "attribution" meaning that it is a paraphrase of what the attributed person said. There is no logical or literary difference between "admitted" and "said". In fact "admitted" implies that Mearls was directly challenged on the point and explicitly admitted it occurred.

No it is not an interview, and it never claims to be one. In fact Greg Tito says that the discussion he had with Mike Mearls occurred while they were sitting around playing a game of D&D. How is that not the equivalent of sitting around the bar having some beers? More to the point, the article is billed as an editorial. An editorial is, by definition, a statement of the author or editorial board's opinion on something. And this smacks of opinion in it's purest form. As for there being no difference between saying the Mike Mearls said something and that he admitted something, take one fact into consideration. Every other statement attributed to Mike Mearls is accompanied by a direct quote. We have Mike Mearls actual words. However, in this one instance we do not we are only told that he admitted to something but we are not told what he actually said. Considering the format the rest of the article takes that is odd, and it would be even more odd if it were an interview.

Adamantine Dragon wrote:
I'm done with this. You either understand the difference between attribution and hearsay or you don't. You either acknowledge the importance of journalistic integrity and credibility or you don't.

I do understand the difference, and I do acknowledge the importance, but I also realize that this does not exceed the threshold of hearsay. In fact, if we were in court, the statement in question would not be allowed because Mike Mearls is not present for cross examination or to defend himself and we do not have his exact words before the tribunal.

Adamantine Dragon wrote:

Either Mike Mearls publicly said, in an interview he knew would be relayed back to RPG fans that WotC ignored playtester feedback or Greg Tito is a hack with no journalistic ethics and Mike Mearls has a legitimate case of libel on his hands.

Believe what you like.

Actually, no he doesn't. Because Mike Mearls is a public figure and the article was an opinion piece, which by definition editorials are, he could not sue for libel unless he could prove actual malice within the context of the statement. Without the ability to prove that this was anything other then the grumbling of someone who took a statement out of context, but believed the interpretation to be true, there can be no libel. Moreover, there is arguably no damage to Mike Mearls reputation or the reputation of WoTC from the statement since most people made up their minds about 4th Edition long before 11 days ago. Anyway, I am done beating a dead horse. Haters gotta hate and I am not gonna convince you to change your point of view.

Adamantine Dragon wrote:

Well, I've got one more thing then.

You assert that this is "hearsay" vs "quotation." I disagree completely. When a reporter writes an interview article in a publication and attributes a statement to the interviewee, then if that interviewee did not say what was attributed this is not "hearsay" this is a fundamental violation of the reporter's ethics and a blow against that publication's credibility.

It is not some guy in a bar saying "I ran into Mike Mearls." It was a reporter writing an article for a publication that presumably adheres to something called "journalistic standards."

What you say, if true, essentially destroys the entire concept of reporting and reduces it to man-in-the-street commentary.

The simple fact that this is being discussed so much on boards like this proves how relevant the article is.

I have not seen the article in question, but the excerpt that was printed as evidence did not appear to be out of an interview article. Greg Tito said that his group's input was summarly ignored and the Mike Mearls said that this was the case for most of the feedback. He did not present a first person account of Mike saying that he just asserted that it was something that he said. It really as the journalistic equivalent of saying "hey I just met Mike in a bar and guess what he said." If you or the original person who metioned the article would like to post a link to it, I would be happy to read it and reevaluate my position based on the context. However, at this point is is the textbook legal definition of hearsay and should be treated as such. As for why Mike Mearls did not dispute it, maybe he never saw the article or maybe he did dispute it and you did not see that article. The on-line gaming press is a big place and even someone as parinoid as Kevin Semida cannot see everything written about them. Guys like mike Mike Mearls are too busy trying to design games that they hope we will all enjoy to constantly police the internet looking for every instance of someone saying that they said something.

Cory Stafford 29 wrote:
Forget what Tito said about his groups' feedback. Look at the part that says that Mike Mearls admitted that they ignored essentially all the feedback from the 4E play test, which means that Mike Mearls admitted it to Tito, or that Tito is deliberately lying, which I find hard to believe because it would be easy for him to be called out for doing so in an online article.

Actually there is a third option that you are missing, that Mike said something to Tito and that Tito took it to mean that he was saying that they ignored the playtest input. This is actually the most likely scenario.

Cory Stafford 29 wrote:

Here it is. It's directly from The Escapist article by Greg Tito

... and Mearls admitted that was essentially true of all the feedback Wizards received from the 4th edition play test.

So what you are saying is that you have no first person account of Mr. Mearls saying that, just hearsay evidence from an admittedly disgruntled member of the playtest group. That makes you case circumstantual at best. Do you have any other sources to back up this claim?

Cory Stafford 29 wrote:
Except this does not take into account the fact the Mike Mearls himself admitted that they pretty much ignored the playtest results. It's not, "They didn't make the changes I wanted, so they totally ignored my playtest comments." It is one of the designers saying, "Yeah, we ignored the playtest comments." That's a huge difference. One is an opinion. One is a fact.

cibet44 wrote:

So who buys this modular 5E anyway?

Speaking as a current Pathfinder player and 3.5 supporter why do I buy it? I have the game my players and I like and we play it. I don't need plug in support for "4E like play" or "1E like play". We play 3.5/PF, that's it.

4E players? Why? Is there a big demand in the 4E community for modular support of other editions of D&D? It doesn't seem like there is but I'm no expert on the 4E community.

1E/2E players? Are current 1E/2E players pining for a new edition of D&D that allows plugin of their old characters? That seems really odd to me. If you are still playing 1E or 2E today I would venture a guess that you are not very open to new rule-sets.

OSR players? Unless 5E goes back to a fully open OGL model I can't imagine any OSR groups even coming near it.

If Pathfinder did not exist I could see WoTC wanting to unite the 3E/4E groups again but since they deliberately abandoned 3E, and Paizo took over that group pretty completely and successfully, who are they targeting with a modular 5E?

Well, as a very smart person said there are six types of gamers that 5th Edition is dealing with.

1) New gamers who have never played any other edition but 5th
2) Existing gamers who will switch to 5th edition because it is new and officially supported
3) Existing gamers who will switch to 5th edition because they have tried the rules and enjoy them.
4) Existing gamers who use both 5th edition and some other edition
5) Existing gamers who stick with there current edition because they have tried the 5th edition rules and dislike them.
6) Existing gamers who will not switch over to 5th edition because it is not the edition they have always played.

So at least in theory two thirds to five sixth of the target market will either buy or at least play in one game using 5th edition. Now to keep those numbers, WoTC will have to find a way to give groups 2 and 3 a reason to stay with 5th edition rather than slip into groups 5 and 6 and that is where the tricky part comes in.

As for the inmates drawing a lot of attention, yes the crimes that they commit will. However, so far they have killed roughly 10 people which we called a slow news day growing up in Los Angeles during the 80s and 90s. Most people in major population centers would put those murders aside and go on with their lives after the media stopped talking about it. As for law enforcement, they have a lot on their plate and in many cases would not give a case another thought once it was closed if they were told the Feds will take it from here. They might expect to be deposed for a trial, but since their reports could be read in as evidence they may or may not even expected to be called to testify at trial.

I am gonna say Tower of Doom and Shadows over Mystara, updated to the 3.5/Pathfinder rule set, with better graphics, and written as an actual RPG rather than just a slasher game.

‎"This is my program; if they are gonna cut off someone's microphone it's gonna be yours!" Judge Judy.

So I am about halfway through the first episode and it is really catching on with me. The conspiracy aspect of the story is intriguing and the characters have depth and complexity that you rarely see on television. I think I have found my new X-Files.

I would also subscribe as my LCS does not currently carry any Dynamite titles.

Also some half construct monsters (from the Advanced Races playtest) and a shadow infused race that is more thematic than the Fetchling.
