Background

Anneca has had a difficult life that gives her a massive chip on her shoulder. She was born in Flint to unknown parents and turned over to a Clergy-run orphanage. Being an orphan is a difficult life, teaching her to trust no one but herself. Her harsh and acerbic exterior is a result of being raised in such an environment. She would occasionally run away and live on the streets, only to find herself returned unwillingly by the local police after a time. Seemingly out of nowhere, Anneca was offered a scholarship to Mitchell University in Slate to learn how to cast spells. She found difficulty in learning many types of spells - more difficulty than any of her peers - and quickly found herself on academic probation. She discovered unmatched talent with elemental spells, but raw destructive ability was not enough to keep her from failing out. Her failure to learn even simple spells outside destructive elemental spells made her angry and bitter, and even more determined to succeed.

Anneca returned to Flint, looking for work. She took a job as a guard for a wealthy businessman, Logan Milsup. She was nearly killed in an assassination attempt on Milsup at his home, though she nearly burned half his house down in the process of warding off the attack. She carries several scars from the assassin, a masked man with unparalleled skill with a sword. He bested her, only to have to flee with the job incomplete because of the fire. She was unaware at the time that one of the RHC constables was undercover as a fellow guard investigating Milsap. She received an offer to join the Royal Constabulary in the aftermath of the fire. Having been fired as a bodyguard for causing so much damage, she joined the force and dedicated herself to succeeding at this new challenge. She quickly developed a reputation among the new constables of someone who is very competent but completely unsubtle - like a battering ram that's on fire, as one instructor put it. She may not have many friends, but she at least hopes to have the respect of her co-workers. She was specifically recruited to the RHC by recommendation of Makala Fileccia, who witnessed her foolhardy bravery when she saved Mills from assassination. Fileccia revealed her patronage once Anneca successfully finished her training as a constable, acting as a mentor and friend. She wants to succeed and earn the respect of her fellow constables, even if she will not admit it. Having failed, one way or another, through her life, she finds the possibility of another failure to be potentially devastating and works hard at averting it. She also longs for true friendship and to be able to trust others. It takes significant willpower for her to put any trust in others, but she desperately wishes that some of her cynicism might disappear in time.

In the opening skirmish of the civil war, Anneca somehow saved the flagship of the Risuri Navy from destruction by activating its techno-arcane Brand, discharging what would have been a devastating and fatal amount of arcane power before it could overload the reactor and detonate. Anneca was nearly incinerated by the sheer power coursing through her, but she survived. When she awoke, she discovered that she could understand and cast the spells that always eluded her at Mitchell, thanks to the trauma of the channeling. She could even manipulate the elements better than before, changing them from one form to another to suit her needs. At the same time, she dealt with terrible loss as she learned that Makala had been murdered by the conspirators against the King.

Unknown to her, Anneca has been watched from afar by a shadowy cabal, aware of her potential great power and hoping to use it for their own benefit. It was this secret cabal that orphaned her, built upon her paranoia with a difficult childhood, and offered her a position at Mitchell. When she failed out and returned, they attempted to cut their losses and assassinate her under the guise of an attempt on her employer's life. The attempt to kill her failed, and she has been too closely guarded at the RHC facility ever since. Her actions in single-handedly activating the Brand of the Coaltongue - an act that would be difficult for an advanced spellcaster, and nearly unfathomable for a relative novice - has brought her back to their attention and sparked their dormant interest.

Three people that are tied to Anneca.
1) Logan Milsup - A financier and merchant renowned in Flint for his business acumen, Milsup has many secrets and many enemies. Some of his money was earned through less than legal means, and much of his influence is tangled in morally suspect endeavors. He attempts to salve his conscience by donating heavily to local charities, especially those favored by the Dockers. While she was in his employ, Anneca found Milsup to be a complex mystery - and Milsup found her aggressive challenges a welcome relief from more urbane women of the upper crust. While he released her employment out of a desire to not see his home burn to the ground, he has kept an eye on her and hopes to reconnect at some point.
2) Makala Fileccia - The spy that Anneca has always wanted to be, they were friendly as fellow guards during Makala's assignment to investigate Logan Milsup. Makala witnessed Anneca's bravery and possible talent when they drove off the assassin together, recommending her for a commission. She has acted as one of the few friends and mentors in Anneca's life. She was killed while investigating the plot against the king.
3) Grannan Telbor - The assassin sent to kill Anneca was burned in the fire that she caused, and had to report a failure. Extremely devoted to his cause, Telbor has not healed the scars that she caused him and has sworn to kill her the next time he gets the order.
