"You seem to have stopped the leak for the moment, Eldin. Still I believe I will now do more good on deck. Have a care with that thug. I don't want him waking up and overpowering you. And give a holler if the boat starts to leak again." Since we have yet to be discovered down here, can I still take 10 on a climb roll, or will I have to roll? Also, I'll send Fidget up the rope. With a climb +10, he should be able to automatically make it. Just to save time: If I can take 10, I get a 10. If I must roll, Anders' climb roll (1d20=14) Either way, I make it. I'll try to be unnoticable behind the tarp covered stuff, there's more important things for the thugs to worry about at the moment. "For my next trick...." And how glad am I that some more opponents have arrived to witness this? Anders will cast silent image and have a large, hideous bat-crow-thing take a swoop over the deck and back out into the darkness, preferable buzzing one of the remaining thugs if I can make a guess as to where one is, if not, oh well... The ghost sound only lasted one round, so it ende, but a silent glide should hopefully have quite an impact, and their imaginations will likely fill in the rest. PHB p. 279, the range is long, so I can move the image fully in and out of the darkness. The size of the image can be up to the size of about a huge creature (if I'm interpreting correctly). The duration of the image is concentration, so it's up as long as I want it, but after the swooping pas, it will stay out in the darkness for a moment, and maybe get some further sound support. Yeah, well, I have a bada$$ initiative, so I'm happy to do it, but I hope it's cool for the DM. Still, just to save time.... Anders' initiative roll (1d20+6=9) HA! My base d20 roll was no better than yours, a 3. While the others are climbing up, Anders will stand ready to cast ghost sound, and I've chosen the illusionary sound I wish to create [NOTE - Anders will only cast the spell upon signal or detection]: Spoiler:
PHB p. 235 -- Ghost Sound, at this level, creates a sound about the volume of four normal humans, and the illusion has minimal movement capabilities. It has a range of close, which works out to 25 ft. I wish to create the sound of a very large pair of leathery wings circling the boat in the darkness above, about 25-30 feet above the waterline, which I think puts it 15-20 feet above the deck. In a slow, flap-flap-flap-glide loop. [whispering]"If you're discovered or a fight breaks out, caw out loudly, like a crow, and I will conjure a sound above them, to get them to look up. We'll come up as best and fast as we can behind. If you see a boarding ladder or net on this side of the boat, roll it over the side as soon as you can."[/whispering] "Those tarpulin covered lumps you say are up there will certainly help cover our boarding and give us some place to hide. Hopefully there are some ropes dangling over the side. There usually are, but I don't see that great in the dark. I can light up the deck once we're aboard, but I'll save that until after our presence is known." Are there any ropes dangling near the tarp-thingies? Also, are the tarp thingies near one end of the boat, or more in the middle? "The true question becomes 'how easily can we approach the boat unnoticed?' If we can get quite close without them noticing us, distracting illusions will be most effective. If we are noticed, and have to parley before boarding, that will likely increase the chances they will see through our ruse, or assume that we are party to whatever commotion the illusions cause, and begin attacking us before we can board." Anders' Spot check (1d20-1=17) "I'm unfamiliar with the boat, but that does seem to be the one Lavinia described." "I have spoken with Terin about our plan somewhat, and we think we might be best served if I create an illusion of some sort to distract the crew and provide us with an opening to get more of our boarders over the gunwhale." "I also have some skill at bluffing my into places I shouldn't be, an old habit from childhood. I might be able to convince them that we are there for an inspection of some sort, though that is risky, and if it doesn't wrk, we're caught in the disadvantaged position, on lower ground. Er... water." "I can create both illusionary sounds and images to distract the occupants of Lavinia's boat. Perhaps an illusionary boarder, though that may get them to interact with it and see through the ruse. Alternately, it could be some kind of menacing spirit, but how they react all depends on how superstitious they are. It may demoralize them or frighten them, or they may attack it. Regardless, their distraction will give us an opportunity to board under conditions of our choosing, eliminating the advantage they have of already being aboard the boat." "I wish I was able to mask our presence and approach, but that is beyond my arcan abilities for now. All we will be able to count on is the cover of darkness. I will be at a disadvantage, as will other humans, but that may still favor us. We are a diverse lot." "Before we begin our assault on this boat, I should mention that I can create some distracting illusions (among other arcane abilities). That may help us board the boat. Also, I should introduce you all to my furry companion, Fidget. You may see him skittering across the battlefield, so please have a care if you do. Also, while he is friendly and does like a skritch, please keep your fingers away from his mouth. His teeth are very sharp, and one of his favorite games is to bite onto things and refuse to let go." The black weasel, draped over Ander's shoulder, raises his head briefly to acknowledge the other humanoids, then returns to his impersonation of an epaulet. "I say we hire a couple of rowboats and just row on out there. Really, swimming will be difficult for all who are not expert at it." "It might be tricky to sneak up on them. I'll pilot the boat that's sneaking up on the back side, as I can see in the dark pretty well. We'll need to be careful with this approach. If we don't get everyone in our party on deck as soon as possible, those in a rowboat below are going to be at a severe disadvantage should combat break out." "If you're asking for my capabilities, I will merely say that I have studied long and hard to learn to control and contain dark forces of raw energy. Forces that have surged through my own body, due to some accident of heritage or birth. Some day I hope to better understand what darkness in my family's past granted me these abilities, but for now, I am confident these abilities can help us secure Lavinia's ship." "I agree that we should do some daytime surveilance, but we should do it singly, or in groups of no more than two. I would be glad to partner with you Bynoc, if you would have such as me for company." "Wise words indeed, friend Terin. Although some things are becomming more illuminated as we gather. Such a diverse collection of people, with apparently more to come. Surely there is some errand the matron of House Vanderboren cannot accomplish on her own. One requireing multiple hands and heads, and a variety of skills and talents." (At the door) -- "Ah, good evening, sir. I presume you are also a guest here of the lady Lavinia." Anders is youthful, but striking in his appearance, with his bald head and dark goatee. He is dressed in a fine outfit, colored in blacks and purples, consisting of a shirt, trousers, and a fine long coat with a short, almost nonexistant collar, and sharp, straight lines that flare below the waist. Kora Whistlegap wrote: "Well, I shouldn't tell you this, but I suggest you prepare for some company. Lavinia is inviting several others. You might find one, what was her name? Oh yes, Lyssa Storm! You might find her attractive." "But of course. With an invitation such as this, I was already planning to arrive in my evening finest." It seems somehow crass to tip Kora, but if there are any flowers growing in my garden (or somewhere nearby, if we're just out on the street), I'll pluck one for her. Knowledge roll to recognise Lavinia Kora Whistlegap wrote: "Thank you Anders," says Kora,"Im sure Lavinia will appreciate someone as young and- attractive as you" Thought to himself: So, this old bag Lavinia likes younger men. Well, if she's not too unbearable to look at, I suppose I can let her fawn on me, if it makes her happy, and more inclined to offer me a favorable proposition... "Again, thank you, M'lady Kora. Should I bring... anything?" Background Note: Spoiler:
Still working up a background, but I figure Anders trained with the Witchwardens, if that's acceptable. "Thank you, Madam Kora," and Anders unfolds the note to read it quietly to himself. "Hmm. Vanderboren, eh?" he thinks to himself. "The name sounds vaguely familiar, but nothing important leaps to mind. No matter. I'm sure this old hag, Lavinia, will make everything clear in due time." "Thank your mistress for me, Kora. And tell her I will gladly attend and hear her proposition."
