Background

Spoiler:

Anatoly doesn't remember much about his early years. He's tried to forget, but sometimes still the remembrance of fear, and violence haunt his nightmares. His parents sent him to New York to be raised by his uncle, when he was 4 years old. He knows his mother is still alive, and living in Spain, but he has not heard from his father or two older brothers since arriving in the US. He hopes that they still live in hiding somewhere, but his hopes dim as the years pass.

Growing up so close to the church invoked a fascination with religion, and he studied it ferociously, but more for education, and adventure than for the real spiritual meaning. This lead him to study archeology in the hopes of uncovering more clues about not only his own religion, but those that proceed and co-exist with it. Professor Chung was his mentor, and noted the potential in the rebellious young man. He took him under his wing, and Anatoly still holds him in great regard as both a source of knowledge, and a dependable friend that he can share anything with.

His Uncle, Father Dudko, realized that Anatoly might some day be persecuted as his family was, and so made sure that he knew how to defend himself, and use firearms. The fascination with blowing things up he learned on his own, and his missing pinky finger on his left hand is evidence that the lessons were sometimes painful.

Seven years ago, after serving an internship, he was fortunate enough to get a position with Brown University, in the archeology department. He met Ms. Winston-Rogers through the equestrian club, they are both members of. Though there was no romantic interest, mainly due to their different backgrounds, a fast friendship developed, and his knowledge of both Archeology and the occult, made him one of the first people she thought of when she decided to pursue her father. After taking a "research" sabbatical from Brown, Anatoly is eager to help.
