A Monk/Master spy would be fun. You could go unarmed anywhere and impersonate anyone while not really losing combat effectiveness... (...except from being a monk, ha). Impersonate unarmed old woman and then... unleash the kung-fu!

You could go moreso if you went a Rogue/Monk Catfolk with the catfolk archetype for rogue. D8 sneak attacks on those claws while doing monk stuff.

Ninja probably is still better for sneaky spy work though.

At the same time, it seems like a bard might be good as well. I guess it is more a matter of if I want to be supplementing it with spells, or if I want to be able to do sneak attack damage, at the same time Ranger would work given its ability to focus two weapon fighting and that the Red Mantis Assassin often uses two weapons. The downside to that is their weapons are normally two handed (except when having the exotic weapon prof in it, then each one counts as a light weapon for dual wielding.)

It also doesn't mesh well with master spy; although taking a 1 level dip of each can give you some sneak attack dice quick, so that's something.

If it's a backstabby social campaign thing, you should probably just go with Master spy. You can enter it quite reasonably from any class (though it takes some time). I'd try an Alchemist, personally.

Sadly in our Jade Regent game I had played one, so I would rather avoid playing one again so soon.

What races are available?

Pretty much anything in the books are being allowed race wise.

So my group has decided to do a sort of politicalish backstaby game, and we are told it is starting level is 8, and is at high fantasy point build. This game is a chance for the group to play some classes that normally we cannot. The rest of the group is rather adept at making optimized characters while I usually go for what sounds neat with poor results.

So I have been tempted to make some sort of Red Mantis Assassin / Master Spy. I have tried to find some other similar posts, but at most I have seen go with ranger or ninja as the base. Could someone help me on what one should do to make this a possiblilty and what levelsmshould be what.

Thanks!

Yeah, Until about level 4 we had maybe 10 gold each. We now have about 5,000 gp in stuff we can sell since the last session we had. So now getting ammo is viable.

If you have a blunderbuss, you could always load the thing with copper pieces.

In the past our group has had an issue in the past as far as crafting is concerned. The cost you pay is considered covering the cost of materials and the like. What happens if you have all the required materials already? Would it be that you need the GP equivalent of materials and then doesn't cost a thing, or do tools have a money slot and it costs to power them?

I will admit I did not do the best of decisions with the multiclassing, but usually with a class you can get away with multiclassing at least once. I did not go 3 levels strait of gunslinger than wildly go another direction.

It was early on when I had yet to get a gun that I went the level ranger since it reflected his being taught by a ranger. The few things they got were nice and could supplement a use of a crossbow until I could actually get a gun. The bird was a nice bonus, and money was near non-existent at the time so was anywhere to actually buy anything.

The level of cavalier was done at the idea of the group saying it would fit the character well. This one is I will admit was not smart.

When I actually had a gun, I had not yet a gunsmithing kit. This left for an expensive time trying to make ammo, and more so when limited on actually getting the sulfur and potassium nitrate (or the quick method of getting that last one, go for bat guano.) Once I had all that stuff I had started to go back into gunslinger.

The reason for the wisdom was that grit is based on your wisdom modifier. It would make more sense if you gained grit as you leveled. Yet again its a matter of sinking feats for more grit, or to reduce the cost of a single grit ability. This part seems a little silly to me. The grit stuff is nice, but does not reflect being so powerful to limit the use that much.

To people going on about the materials, I'm just imagining what sort of heat you would need to go about casting some Adamantine bullets. If you went to fire that thing, say goodbye to any rifling your gun may have. I suppose you would need to go the Armor Piercing route and have an adamantine core with a softer metal on the outside.

I see a lot of people do not like firearms, but I want to know how Paizo is going to handle them in the future. You have the bonus that they are more or less regulated by Alkenstar. It's one of the purposes of Shield Marshals to make sure that no one other than those they want, to have them.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but gunslingers are strong.

But ONLY if taking a set feats, and don't dare do anything other than that, and wait levels and levels for the occasional grit power which most are awesome thematically, but only a few are actually helpful. It just seems so horribly under-powered otherwise. The other classes can stand on their own, and with variety and while some feats are surely important, there are many combinations you can go.

Yep, I can't really take advantage of it but it makes sense for the party. I can only take a Teamwork feat as the Tactician feat.

I will see if I can't get the cavalier level swapped out, but I would like to keep the level of ranger. The favored enemy: Human is nice and it fits with the story for having multi-classed into ranger.

What is your basic concept for this character?...

And, if you don't mind, a multiple choice question:

Thanks, this is a really good question and way about going about it. A little back story is that my character's father was a Shield Marshal, who was killed trying to bring down a criminal from Alkenstar. JB is following in his footseps. A sort of Texas Ranger / US marshal sorta deal. (only with Alkenstar)

the cavalier is for the horse more than anything, and ranger had to do with the group roughing it in the wilderness for months on end as a gnoll ranger as a father figure / teacher. I forgot to note that Ranger I went the Falconer archetype. I thought it was cool to have a bird I could have go scout.

E.) I am quite happy with my character, but not is performance. I would like some advice on what future choices to make.

Thematically I love the character, and how the game has made him change a bit. Playing him however, he plays like garbage. Partially due to the choices in levels, and due to the low access to stuff. I do find it funny that Alkenstar created guns to make up for the lack of predictable magic in the mana wastes. It seems like regular weapons are more effective.

As a gunslinger with Broken Wing Gambit, I'm curious as to what type of character you're playing...
...you may want to look into switching quick draw for rapid reload...

The Broken Wing Gambit is to fill the Tactician ability of Cavalier, The group constantly is taken advantage of so it makes sense for them to have grown to use that to their advantage.

From what I am reading, it seems a gunslinger really needs this feat. I find it interesting that getting a single feat either makes or breaks a class. I think a class should still be able to hold up without it in its basic form. Sure, not great but at least be viable.

I would love to be able to trade it out and wait out, my character's goal is to become a Shield Marshal. Right now, he meets the requirements for it. I suppose I can hold off three more levels.

One level of cleric would have been a better choice than ranger or cavalier...

I was thinking that as well, but it was only the last session that we got the +2 circlet of wisdom, so back when I had gained cavalier I didn't see that as an option back then.
