Story
---------------------

Aljohar Sines was born to the marriage of a retired, disabled soldier with a much younger war widow - a common arrangement in war-torn Haltwhistle. Though the family was able to get by on the soldier's pension, there certainly wasn't any extra money lying around. Aljohar's two older brothers went off to war before her, she went as a medic, and her younger brother was preparing to go when the war ended.

Aljohar wandered back into town a year or so ago, displaying no particular enthusiasm about being home. When asked about the war, she mostly shrugs, having done her best to save whomever she could, but, in her mind, not nearly enough, as most of those around her perished. It was bad enough that she couldn't save everyone from her town, but to come back and see their grieving families is torture for her. But she stays, feeling obligated to replace those who were lost as best she can.

Still, nothing seems quite real here anymore. Daily life seems empty and pointless. She's grown quiet and withdrawn since her return, rarely socializing for fun, but always volunteering for guard and work details to help the families of the war dead. She returned to her parents' house to live, though her younger brother and the one older brother who returned have left to make their own way and start families. Despite her parents' urging (subtle and un-) to find a mate and set up her own house, Aljohar has not returned the interest of any of the men (or women) in town. She seems almost impervious to casual social interaction, preferring to spend her leisure time in study and debate with another local misfit, Linokashtai.

She's more relaxed around those who served alongside her and returned, particularly those she healed and helped restore to health. She saved all her pay and gave it to her parents upon her return, so they could improve the house and buy a few luxuries they'd never had. Now, she makes a living off small payments for healing and blessings. She is always cordial, at least, though sometimes rather short. Her attention tends to drift from what's happening around her to a point somewhere on the horizon, where she apparently sees things nobody else does, returning to here and now with a start when tapped or shaken.
