Really glad of the long recruitment. I have been very busy as of late and its nice to know I still have some time to finish up my submission!

Scarab Sages

Morning Crusty,

You know I could not pass on another ruins of pathfinder AP. Like we talked about before I will be working Ali Al'Zahrid into the current history. He previously served as a guide for a group of pathfinders that were seeking out Kelmarane. I plan to work in some backhistory to bring up what happened after the group reached Kelmarane and how he went onto surviving the attack by the Firebleeder. The thing is, I want Ali to be more of a Champion and less of a Marshal. Would you mind if I took the Champion trait, but instead had the backstory of the Marshal?

At the edge of the dune sea, midmorning, 24 Desnus, 4711:

As Ali finishes watering his camel and he makes ready to mount the lumbering beast he briefly looks towards the horizon before his eyes snap back up to the north east. "Felliped! Theodric! Ali sharply commands, pointing with his hand towards darkening blur on the horizon. "There, to the north-east! A sandstorm! Quickly my friends, mount and follow me. There is not a moment to lose. Running a hand though his beard, Ali scans the area before nodding to himself. "I know of a cave not far from here that we can weather out the storm, but it is at least a mile off, and we may not reach it before the storm hits us. We must move very quickly." Putting action to word Ali mounts his camel and begins to guide the beast with a heightened sense of urgency directly into the path of the oncoming storm.

Goddess, I pray, be with us now!

At the edge of the dune sea, mid-morning, 24 Desnus, 4711:

"My friends!" Shouts Ali, gesturing with one hand while he maneuvers the camel with the other. "We have reached the end of the dunes! By sunset we will be to our next stop!" Skillfully drawing his camel up next to Felliped and Theodric, Ali's gleaming white teeth flash though his beard. "It's going to get hotter soon, and the rest of the way will be though several rocky hills. We should stop of a few moments and let our mounts water before we continue." Swinging one leg off of his camel Ali retrieves a waterbag from his saddlebag and starts to fill it with some of their precious water, before slipping it over the head of his mount. "I'm sure you have all heard that camels can survive for weeks off its store in the desert, and that’s true, but there is no reason if we have the water to force the noble beasts into hardship." Half smiling at the antics between Zafira and Theodric. "Well some are noble at least. Regardless, before we go further, if you have brought with you any armor or weapons, I would keep them close at hand. Now that we have moved away from the desert, bandits and wild animals are far more common. It will be hot and uncomfortable wearing layer upon layer, but I assure you that it will far more comfortable than an arrow to the chest." As if to emphasize his point Ali begins digging around his saddle bags only to withdraw a pitted and dented breastplate. Slowly and methodically strapping it on, he then tests each buckle and strap making sure that it fits correctly, once he is done he hangs his Falchion across his back and then begins to check over his mount. "It is better my friends to be prepared, and not need it, then to need something and not have it. Let me know if you need help looking to your mounts, you especially Theodric. Ha Ha Ha"

In the Shadow of a Watchtower, night, 23 Desnus, 4711:

"And all the missing Songs for Ali..." mumbles Ali. One of the ǧinnī Of all of the wonders of the desert, none of them are greater then the element-kin. Blinking away the dryness in his eyes Ali looks around at his companions. "Do you remember the last thing he said?

"to bring you a safe journey, success in your archaeological expedition, knowledge for Felliped, reknown for Theodric, and all the missing Songs for Ali!"

"I have not told you any of these stories yet, but some speak of powerful Jinn that when greeted with kindness and respect, they will return the favor three fold. They are able to grant to others whatever is the deepest desire within their hearts. I don't know... there was something magical about his last tale. Somehow I know I will find all of the missing songs, perhaps each of you feel the same? And to think... he had visited my people before... I didn't think it worth mentioning, but two days from now we will pass by a large volcano named the Pyre Crest. It was considered holy by my people, for they believed that it was home to group of powerful and dangerous efreet. It would be best if we begin to heed the old tales, and tread with caution."

Taking a handful of sand, Ali begins to put out the fire. "It's late and we have a long day ahead of us. Both of you try to get some sleep, Felliped, I'll wake you when its your watch."

Oh my friends... a dream can be so easily broken, I too suspect our guest is more then a man, but it is not for us to question! We have given him salt and shade and we are blessed that he has graced us with his presence. Sighing, Ali turns and quietly corrects his companions Fellipend! This man is our guest! He has given his name, a story and a song. It is our responsibility as hosts to be gracious and polite, so that one day the favor might also be returned. Forgive me Pazhvann, they do not know the ways of the dune walkers." There are so many questions I would love to ask, but it is not my place. These outlanders do not understand. "That was an amazing song my friend, I can honestly say that I have never heard its like before. And your knowledge of the songs is to be greatly admired."

Pazhvann wrote:
"That was one of the songs Shazathared sang for Jhavhul. The lord of al-Bazan was ever known to be cruel of heart, even among the efreet, and he found such tales... Amusing." He looks in to the fire, then glances up at Ali. "Many centuries the Keepers of the Flame walked the camel's road, and they were among the last to bear memories of things other men have forgotten."

"Yes... I thought the same as well of my clan. Most scoff, but I have always believed that there was more to the songs then just fables. There must have been a grain of truth in each! Indeed, if a desert can swallow whole city's to the sands, is it not unreasonably to believe that a Efreet Sultan could kidnap a beautiful Marid princess? Thank you for the Song friend. I shall add it to my collection. Perhaps it is foolish, but I consider it a debt of honor to my clan, that I try to recover each lost song, so that the tales of Shazathared will not be lost as so much has. You have done my people a kind service. Thank you."

In the Shadow of a Watchtower, Night, 23 Desnus, 4711:

Proffering a cup of Coffee, Ali pauses as the man asks about his tribe. The earlier smile on his face now completely gone. "My tale is one then the night is long my friend." Sipping on his coffee slowly, Ali leans back against his saddlebag, gazing long into the flames of the campfire before continuing. "It all happened about fifteen years ago. I was just a boy then, no more then twelve summers. You must understand that in the desert tribes you are expected from a very young age to assist the tribe, even as a child. I was riding ahead of our caravan, acting as a scout. Forgive my lack of modesty, but even then my eyes were sharp and I was a skilled rider. Regardless, I was several leagues away from my tribe when a powerful haboob suddenly appeared around me without warning. Blessed be the name of Sarenrae, I was only caught in the fringe, but I was without shelter, and when the dust and sand block out the very sun around you, it is very easy to become lost, so I was forced to build a sand cave and wait out the storm." Grimly chuckling Ali takes another long sip of his coffee and turns to Felliped. Have you ever been in a fight and had sand thrown in your face? No? Then you cannot understand how blistering a pain that first day was. Half-blind, barely able to breath from the dust in the air, fighting to just survive. Pffha! I have heard sailors speak of the great salt seas as if they are a cruel mistress. Fools the lot, there is no greater temptress then the great dunes. She gives with one hand and takes with the other! On the fourth day the storm finally broke. I clawed my way out of the cave and in the distance I could make out a large pall of smoke rising from the horizon. With no other landmarks in sight I made my way towards the smokes origin." Pursing his lips as if the coffee left a sour taste in his mouth, Ali prods the fire, stoking the flames. "When I reached the smokes origin, I found the remains of my tribe. There was wreckage everywhere. Everyone I knew and loved was dead, but they didn't die alone. Scattered among the bodied were strewn the corpses of Gnolls. Actually that was the day that I also earned this scar." Ali pulls back the edge of his Keffiyeh exposing a long scar that goes from the left side of his hairline down to his jaw. "One of the weaker Gnolls had been left at the wreckage. He was already wounded, so I'm sure he was left by his tribe to die. He was the first Gnoll I ever killed, though it could have easily gone the other way." Ali looks up from the flames. Taking some sand from beside the campfire he begins to methodically use it to scrub out his tin cup. "That's about the best answer I can give. I honestly don't know what happened. Even to this day I am left with more questions then answers. The Keepers were a long way away from the normal area that Gnolls tend to attack, and the sand storm that blew up was never predicted by our Flame Keeper. Call it pride, but I refuse to believe that it was a random attack. We had fought Gnolls before. We knew how to defend ourselves. It looked like a Gnoll raid. I have seen plenty since, but they tend to loot and pillage. Even rape the women. None of that happened. The came in under the storm, killed everyone and left. I wish I could tell you more my friend. I wish I knew more. But I am afraid that may be a secret that will be lost to the dunes like so many others."

In the Shadow of a Watchtower, Night, 23 Desnus, 4711:

Observing the reaction of his companions, Ali gives a reassuring smile. "Be at peace Theodric, this man is our guest. He has freely taken of the offered salt and shade, and as such we have bound ourselves to a pact of peace for the evening. It is ancient and honorable tradition among the tribes of the region, and one our guest appears to be familiar with, for he knows of the Keepers of Flame as well, and would have received a similar greeting from them."

Reaching into his travel bag, Ali retrieves a aged tin pot, and places some water over the fire letting it begin to boil. "Will you take coffee?" Ali ask's their guest. "I don't have much, but enough I think for a guest."

Leaning towards Theodric and Felliped, Ali beings to explain his odd behavior. "Its custom my friends. You see, generosity brings honor, while stinginess spawns contempt. As a result, Osirion hospitality is unrivaled. Hospitality demands that a man must offer food and drink to anyone who appears at his doorstep as a friend, no matter how poor the host may be. Did you not find it curious that the first day I met you I bought you mint tea and hummus? It is the nature of such things."

Bringing the water to a slow boil, Ali begins to prepare the coffee. "To answer your question, I too heard that tale among the بأمين اللهب. But much has been lost to the sands now. To my knowledge all of the remaining keepers are dead and gone." Shrugging in quiet contemplation Ali broods for a moment while he gazes into the flames. "My Flame Keeper used to be able to make the flames come alive when he would tell his stories, you could feel the unquenchable heat from the City of Brass, or see the tears roll down Shazathared's beautiful face each night she begged for her life with a tale. I am... a sad substitute. I know the words, but so much of our history was lost. I know of the great and beautiful Shazathared, but this efreeti warlord Jhavhul al-Bazan, that is a memory's, memory of a name." Snapping awake from his reminiscence, Ali gives a half smile. "Such a poor host I am. Ah, here the coffee is ready. May I offer you a cup, while you speak of any news or stories from your trip? Even the music of your bandur would be appreciated. Forgive me if I offer generosity with hand hand and grasp with the other, however new tales are something to be treasured beyond wealth, as I think you know."

Seeing the tall man appear before the fire, Ali rises and clasps his hands together while giving a short bow from the waist. As if part of a age old choreograph Ali greets him in the traditional manner of the nomadic tribes of the Brazen Peaks. "Peace be upon you friend, and be welcome to our camp. I am Ali, a local guide and these are my employers, Felliped and Theodric. May I offer you some water, salt and shade? We have some food remaining from dinner and you are welcome to share the fire with us." Smiling Ali gestures to the fire with one hand, and with the other beckons for the man to sit. Traditional greetings complete Ali begins to converse with the man. "I am surprised you know the tale friend. Its quite old indeed, and fewer still remember it. I don't suppose you are familiar with any of the other songs? Ah but where are my manners, tell me of yourself. have you been on the route long? Its rare these days to see single travelers as of late, ever since attacks from the gnolls of the Brazen Peaks have increased."

Magister, please let me know if the man does not accept my offer of Salt, historically its a peace offering and bond of trust for the duration of the visit.

In the Shadow of a Watchtower, Night, 23 Desnus, 4711:

A waning moon hangs high in the sky. The light causes the dunes to shimmer with a silver sheen as three men lean low over a slowly crackling fire...

"Thank you for the milk Felliped and you as well Theodric for cleaning up. Dinner is always more enjoable when spent in good company. Now does anyone have some tobacco or perhaps an Oud or Sitar? No, a shame. I do enjoy music or quite smoke by the fire. Ah but where are my manners. I promised you a tale..."

It was said by wise men that know such things that there once lived a great and powerful king. This man was the ruler of a an ancient empire and he was known as Caliph Abd al-Malik bin Marwan. One day the Caliph sat conversing with his advisers concerning our god Sarenrae, and they noted that Sarenrae in her wisdom had bestowed upon him of lordship and dominion over all that was right and good, but still this was not enough for the Caliph, and he called for his high-priest to attend him. When the priest appeared, the Caliph said that he was troubled for his heart was still like stone, and not the beauty of a woman nor the first break of dawn over the dunes could inflame it. The high-priest wise in his years nodded knowingly. “Indeed my lord, You have attained more then any man has known, but all of us are equal in our hearts, I can help you not." advised the priest. The Caliph was unhappy with the priests answer and asked his advisors and hangers on if anyone knew how to move his quiet heart. Then said Talib bin Sahl (who was a seeker after treasures and had books that discovered to him hoards and wealth hidden under the earth), “O great and powerful Caliph, Sarenrae may thy dominion to endure and exalt thy dignity here and hereafter! My father told me of my grandfather, that he once took ship with a company, intending for the island of Sikiliyah, and sailed until there arose against them a contrary wind, which drove them from their course and brought them, after a month, to a great mountain in one of the lands beyond the horizon, but where that land was they wot not." Quoth my grandfather "I saw a great fiery mountain rising up out of the sea, blood red in light, with the smell of brimstone. This was in the darkness of the night and as soon as it was day, there came forth to us, from the caves of the mountain, folk made of flames, with skin black as coals with hair like a roaring fire. The very water hissed around them and burst into clouds and none could stand near them for blisters would form on their skin."

Rising up from the depths of his story Ali looks around at the two Pathfinders. "Ah but the night grows late and we have a long day tomorrow, for we must continue our journey. By evening we should reach the foot hills of the brazen peaks. Tomorrow I shall continue you my tale." Standing up and stretching Ali looks out past the tower and towards the moon. "I'll take first watch. Try to get some sleep."

"My friends, you ask me to cook, hunt, guide and tell stories! You wound me with your greediness! I joke! Yes, I shall cook for you, as well as tell you of the wonders of the desert." Reaching into his saddlebag Ali withdraws a large ceramic bowl. "But one of you shall have to milk the camels tonight, and the other shall clean up after dinner. We all carry our weight out here, understand? I leave it upto you to decide. Oh, and Felliped, yours is a bull, I don't think you would like its milk! Ha!"

Gathering up some tinder and dried camel dung Ali begins to make a fire inside of the ruined tower.

"Speaking of camels, several years ago I witnessed a amusing occurrence while I was in the city of Azir. As you know the Rahadoumi are merchants above all else, and while I was in the market I witnessed an Rahadoumi merchant approach a Cheliaxian and his female companion. The merchant was carrying fine silk's for trade and for several minuets he impassionately attempted to barter with the Chelixian for a to buy his wares. After yielding no results the merchant asked the man where he was from and the man replied "Cheliax". Looking at the mans consort, with her dark hair and olive skin, the Rahadoumi responded. "She's not from Cheliax." "Yes I am." replied the woman. The merchant aghast, looked at her and asked. "Is he your husband?" "Yes." replied the woman. The merchant then turned to the husband, and said... "I'll give you one hundred camels for her." The man looked stunned, and there was a very long silence. Finally I saw him respond. "She's not for sale." After the merchant left, the somewhat indignat wife asked her husband "What took you so long to answer?" Then the man replied with "I was trying to figure out how to get 100 camels back home."

"Ha ha ha! I kid! Come, the fire is ready and I shall begin dinner. Do you have the camel milk yet? I need it so I can poach the rabbit. It shall be a fine dinner, and once we are settled in I will tell you of "Talib bin Sahl and the City of Brass"

Southern Osirion on the trail to Kelmarane, 23 Desnus, 4711:

The roiling sun sets over the dunes as Ali, Felliped and Theodric guided their camels over the sea of sand.

"Come my friends! I know it has been a long day and you are sore from the unfamiliar beasts, but we are not much further out from our campsite. Perhaps another hour if we maintain our pace."

Seeing a Sand Hare scared into flight from the travelers Ali whips up his bow and lets loose an arrow at the fleeing rabbit.

Attack Roll: Longbow, Composite (Str +4) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Damage Roll: Longbow, Composite (Str +4) 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

The arrow streaks out and catches the arrow in the skull, preserving all of the meat.

"A thousand blessings Sarenrae for your bounty!" Ali intones as he unlimbers himself from the camel. Retrieving his arrow, Ali begins to methodically skin the game. "It seems that we will not have to eat trail rations tonight after all! A fortuitous start to our journey"

Several hours later...

"Yes, yes here we are." Pointing ahead of the group there seems to be a half ruined tower sticking out from the dunes. Sandblasted and weathered you can still make out the tower dome. "The nomads say that this was once the tallest tower of a great and powerful city. The Sheik was a wise and powerful ruler. But at the height of his power, like many men he became enraptured in his own greatness. The gods cursed him and scoured his city with the sands of eternity. Perhaps it is a children tale, perhaps there is more to it. It is not for me to say. Even in stories there is a grain of truth, I think. Come, let us take shelter for the night and build a fire. I believe you are owed another story Felliped..."

Perhaps Hamid has a point, I have accepted his salt and water, it is poor of me as a guest to deny him the opportunity of profit, I shall have to make amends to him when I return next. Ali is at first abashed at his behavior, and then smiles in return as Hamid jests with him. "I wish all of the blessings of the four winds upon you my friend, and I will say prayer for each step I take along my journey for your continued prosperity. I promise keep a eye out for any passing travelers along the route, and let them know you are a always looking to barter. My thanks for your efforts on my behalf. I will send word when I have returned to Ipeq, peace be with you."

After bartering for the Song Ali examines it like a miser would covet gold. Knowledge (religion) 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Edit: Whoooo! Nat 20!

"Yes, I remember this story. It was one of the first to be told by Shazathared upon her capture by the Efreeti Sultan. An excellent find Hamid, your right, the scroll work and imprinting are beautifully rendered. I have heard this song before, but never seen it printed so. It is a wonderful find. Thank you again."

Now, lets go see about those camels... Stepping out of the tent and into the busteling market Ali turned to his employers. "Come my friends, let us see how you are supplied for the trip."

I have started a tab on my character page, with all of the songs I will either collect or tell during our journey.

Ipeq, 22 Desnus 4711-Pathfinder:

"The blessings of the pharaohs upon you my friends" Bellowed the fat merchant with sweat stains and grubby finders. "Yes, of course!" With a twinkle in his eye, Hamid sizes up the two pathfinders, first Theodric and then Felliped. "You must be the employers Ali spoke of. A good man, Ali, in his own way. Yes, yes, you won't be disappointed. Can I offer you some shade, perhaps a date or tea? Please come into my shop." Hamid yells into the back of the stall and a boy, no older then ten runs out. "My boy, go find Ali, he should be near the camel stalls. Go now, we have guests!" Turning back to the Pathfinders, Hamid gives a slightly too wide smile. "Come, let me show you my wares while we wait. Men of stature such as yourself will be sure to find something of interest..."

Fade to black

Striding into the stall, Ali removes his shoes and wipes his hands. "My friends, You have chosen to take me on as your guide? This is most excellent! walking up to Felliped, Ali takes in at a glance the trinkets and bobbles that are arrayed on Hamid's counter. "Felliped, I wouldn't buy that figurine... ivory right?" Looking closer at the statue, Ali sighs "It's palm ivory, not oliphant, practically worthless. Hamid, I appreciate you setting up these meetings for me, that's why I pay you. But please don't try to shear my employers. I don't mind you trying to sell them your wares, but show them the real stuff in the future, alright?" As if he were attempting to soften the rebuke Ali claps Hamid on both shoulders and gives him a kiss on first the right and then the left cheek. "Anyhow, the sun will be setting in a few hours, so we should get ready to head out. Its easier to travel by night when the air is cool. Chuckling at the old scoundrel, Ali fishes out a handful of silver. "Better luck next time my friend. I'll send word when I am in town next. Peace be upon you." Offering a short bow to the merchant, Ali places his boots back on, and steps out of the tent. As if remembering something Ali turns back to Hamid from the entrance of the tent. "Did you manage to locate any of the Song's like I asked you to while I was in town Hamid?"

Thank you all so much. I have applied to quite a few pbp's in the past, but I can honestly say that this was one of the best group of applicants for a single spot I have ever seen. Each of you guys had rich character history's and fantastic writing. I hope in the future we get the chance to play more together. Vonna, Zahir and Ghostclaw, it was a pleasure. Theodric, Valik and Felliped, thanks for the opportunity! I'm very excited.

Looking around the table and seeing that it has been cleared of hummus and tea. Ali stands, claps his hands together in front of him, and bows shortly before Felliped and Theodric. "May the blessings of the four winds be upon you both, and may you always find water and shade. I will leave you now, to converse and make your decision if you wish to hire me. If you wish to seek me out, speak to Hamid at the Caravanners Guild. He will know how to reach me. It was a pleasure." Then like a sudden gust of wind across the dunes, Ali is gone.

Just a copy/paste of my last posting, but I wanted to follow up with your question Theodric

A little relief manifests over Felliped's face along with a sigh. "a... Yes it's just a short trip, we'll be alright. " He says reassuring himself.

"You would be in capable hands, I assure you Felliped. I would say its safer to travel by caravan, but they do tend to attack attention, and I suspect that's something you wish to avoid." Ali winks at the Pathfinders"None the less, this is a moot point of course since none have traveled to Kelmarane years."

Felliped Leroung wrote:
"Only a couple of extra above what we need to carry food and water. After all most of the supplies will be gone when it's time to return and the extra space can be used to carry some of the artifacts."

"A wise suggestion, and quite prudent. Water should not be a issue, since your companion can create it if so necessary. And even a town abandoned such as Kelmarane should have had a well, if we can locate it once we arrive."

Felliped Leroung wrote:
"Really!" Felliped turns to Theodric a wide smile on his face. As if to say 'come on let's hire him now!'. Then he turns back to Ali "That would be fantastic I'd love to learn these tales!"

I would be happy to share the كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة, with you Felliped. And if your feeling generous, I would not mind hearing a few of your chronicles." Chuckling Ali face grows red for a moment. "As a child I was told many legends of my tribe. Occasionally traveling merchants would tell us for a passing news or rumors, but my favorite stories from outsiders were from the hero's of the Pathfinder Chronicles. I loved to hear of Godric the Red and the Legendary lost city of Zarumish or Sahira Longstrider and her hundred arrows."
