Etellio is somewhat interested in Shalelu; his curiosity about elves is part of it. He certainly could be somewhat attracted to her - but that's still nebulous - and he doesn't want to seem weird by asking too much about elven cultural stuff. I think meeting our hostess at the Rusty Dragon could also be interesting; at least to thank her for the free food. Otherwise, he's certainly curious in walking around Sandpoint, maybe. Given his multi-classing, getting a short sword or rapier would be helpful. Some thieves tools might also be a priority; but he's pretty cash poor right now - unless we had a windfall I forgot about. Not to butt in, but I've been reading the PF#10, which has the players endure all kinds of Shoanti ritual adventures - including one or two involving the Lyrune Quah. I'm beginning to see why Yin might be considered an outcast with her love of fire amongst that clan. ;-) As for Rellios, and I already mentioned it some - I think I could see:
Spoiler:
a) If we plan to stay in the Spires, that's cool. Rellios certainly would have no qualms in helping clear the place out; it seems the proper thing in his mind. He has a great deal of respect for Kamris. b) A trip to Magnimar to speak with his foster family; maybe see what happened with that blacksmith. c) As you mentioned, he's curious to go back to Korvosa and see if he can clear his name. See what's going on there, at least - I guess it could depend on how much is tied in with the Crimson Throne AP. That was kind of my inspiration for the backstory - although in no way would I expect us to plunge into that whole storyline. d) Generally, I'm willing to go with whatever the group wants. Helping out his new friends like Hru, Manfred, Yin, and Kamris is certainly not something Rellios would decline. In Hru's case, I think he's wanting the half-orc to find his place in the world; if that's what he wants. Rellios is developing an attachment to Yin and Kamris. These two are starting to feel like something comforting - maybe because they speak elven if nothing else. Manfred, he's spent alot of time among humans, so he's not so curious about him just yet - but I can see some ideas brewing. Hope that's not too much drama.
I have to say, this has been one of the funnest pbp I've done. The personalities and interaction has been great. And Tarren has managed to 'wrangle' us without having to drop the hammer too much. So, yea, it's been great! I don't know if Fabes would concur, but it sort of reminds of Flamifur's defunct pbp - in terms of the character's conversations and reactions so far. Have a safe trip, Amardolem. Just wanted to add in, Joe, that I don't think your alone on being edition neutral, and that so far nothing you've posted would be something I would call inflammatory on either side. Your comments and questions are good; so don't let it disappoint. In McCoy defense, he's also pretty level headed in my observations - so I don't think his comment was intended as being rude or mean. That being said, I totally believe that both editions and their iterations can co-exist. Whether they are all successful, I can't say -but I do think that 3.5 variation such as Paizo's 3Path and 4th can each find a market and appeal. I would have to say that it is probably possible now moreso than with any other edition that has been developed (although with the internet there's plenty of chances for 1st and 2nd edition construction that didn't exist in the past to make them still viable). It's all good here, I hope. Kayos. wrote: I'm on the EU servers, yay Defiant! That, on the other hand, makes me nervous. When DM's start laughing to themselves and rubbing their hands together (ala Snidley Whiplash), something's not good about to happen. Welcome, good sir. I think you have some good choices there. The thing you might realize, comparing the Gazetteer with Rise of the Runelords, is that the folks at Paizo slowly changed some stylistics elements as they have matured Golarion(Pathfinder's world) into a product line. Overall, I think you'll find the first AP to be a good primer for learning about Golarion and how it works as much as the Gazetteer.
Hollow's Last Hope - D0
The first four are adventure modules, but I suggest them as a way to also introduce players to the Pathfinder world outside a proscribed setup like the APs. They are smaller steps to the Pathfinder world. I mention the Korvosa/Crimson Throne materials as good next step in seeing a more urban setting after Rise of the Runelords more diverse setting. Despite the setup for Magnimar, Korvosa is much more detailed and provides extensive information about that area of Varisa. I've only played the X-box version, and I hear it plays slightly differently on PC, if that's a choice. That being said: While it might be considered slightly generic, the sci-fi feel is great! I love the details and the game world they have created - it is very creative in sliding between science facts and fiction in their development. There's certainly a great storyline there, and after awhile you can really get into the events taking place. While it might be intended to be epic in nature, I think it keeps it fairly straightforward. There's enough RPG quality to keep it from being a straight shooter. The way you can customize the character by their equipment, abilities, and even alignment certainly allows for variation and different styles. As far as dislikes, that would partially depend on your experience with Bioware games. They make great games, especially RPGs, but you may experience some deja-vu in the game's style and storyline if you played Bioware games before. Comparison with Knights of the Old Republic may be the obvious one; but many of their other games have similar thematic ideas and characters as in Mass Effect. So, that may disappoint. Also, despite it being an interesting feature, I really didn't care much for the overland transport on planets bit. It's a necessary feature to at least practice for later plot development, but it seems kind of a frustrating bit of the game to me. Finally, like many Bioware games, how much background details of the game world you want to learn depends on how much you dig into side quests/missions and random materials found throughout the world. Overall, go for it! If you love a sci-fi storyline wrapped with a distinct RPG feel and developed in a unique game world it should be fun. I'm honestly hoping Bioware will create additional "episodes" to add onto the game. Tobus Neth wrote:
I usually don't want to talk out of turn about someone, but CWM is one of those people who I see in discussions and I wonder about the guy. I hope it isn't rude to express it. He seems such an intelligent, engaging fellow on the one hand, but at the same time seems to carry a level of obstinancy and over-sensitivity that makes me not even want to enter a discussion with him. Aubrey's insight seems to best explain it; he seems like he's had an earnest interest in talking about 4e at one time. Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote:

You're welcome, kind sir! ;-) Seriously, you've certainly made this one of the more entertaining Pbps I've played and sparked my continued interest in D&D.While I can't speak for a Phd, my Master's degree was a research project thesis that took my almost two years as well - so you have my sympathies, friend. Fizz, I don't think I know you as well some others on this board; nor can I claim to be telling what's best for you. But what you are describing (forget the D&D stuff - I mean the whole outlook) sounds like a deep step and I'm not certain you are ready to make that step right now. For lack of a better assessment, you would seem to be in one of the five steps of grief. Speaking from a personal experience involving a friend and the loss of a child, grief can warp your personal perspective quite intensely. Try to measure out this decision; seek some counseling; if possible, spend time with family - they are often the ones who can support you best. In any case, give it some time to make sure you are doing this with a clear head. In any case, I am sorry for your loss and I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide. I don't know that it helps for any of us to offer advice, but I think we all want to wish the best for you. OK - here's a question for all involved - with final ruling by our GM, I would suppose. I am once again looking at the rogue option of: **Combat Trick: A rogue may gain a combat maneuver feat in place of a rogue talent.** Since I'm assuming this means one of a certain number of feats, I am considering Improved Trip. The requirement however is Int 13 - which I don't have. Does the class option overide this condition, or does it just mean it's a feat I could have if I meet the prerequisites. I suppose I could increase my Int ability to 13 to meet this, but was kind of hoping to use it in Con instead. Any thoughts on this, or am I overthinking it? Kobold Cleaver wrote:
Sounds cool, man. I'm assuming you're getting to enjoy the Memorial Day holiday. Have a good one. ;-) Kayos. wrote: And again we have the 'where does Yin get all of these mystery books?' problem... This may be a dumb suggestion, but if you are going to keep Yin as a mage and want to explain new spells, you could say that the spells are there all along - Yin just hasn't simply been aware of how they worked properly until now. Maybe the practical application of spells has opened her awareness (ie level) to new nuances that allows her to now master the written spells. I used to be a physics teacher. I can tell you that sometimes when I taught my students certain ideas I would start by presenting the materials as written. They would often "not get it", even after explaning the mathematics behind it. After doing sample problems (sometimes lots and lots of them), and usually following up with experiments and physical examples, they would at least grasp the basic "how's." Then, as we moved on to another application, the material we had covered would seem more natural in terms or use and understanding - they would see how it fits in larger applications. So, maybe upon reading through the books she already has - Yin comes to glean some further spell that she didn't understand. That by making gesture Y instead gesture X you understand the basis for fireball instead of just fireray. Then she realizes that page 27 in her book isn't just a random array of arcane scribbling - rather it's the basis for that spell. This may be totally against what can be allowed - but assuming you're allowed to get more spells without finding more spellbooks - this is just my suggestion. Hope it helps. James Jacobs wrote:
OK, James - thanks for the insight. So she's not bad...she's just drawn that way...lol I'm glad someone mentioned Laori, because I had a question about the character as well. My apologies for jumping off from the direct question, but how the heck do you make form-fitting chainmail like that? (based on the illustration)
I get the feeling you could play her as a creepy kind of hotness to the PC's as well. By the way, possible suggestions to make this seem chilling or more interesting is how you convey it to the PC's. Since, in theory, the PC's will probably hear from Commander Kroft first: *Make the Commander appear more haggard than is described. You could hint that she looks even worse than when they've seen before; that's she's got a bottle of liquor at hand and is drinking liberally from it. She's clearly spooked and concerned; and she's trying to steady her nerves. *Describing the incident should be a matter of explaining that neither she nor Endrin ever expected the Queen more than a frivolous tyrant. That they didn't know what a monster (literally) she was until that moment. *That she's fearful that the Grey Maidens will come marching in; that they are essentially the law now and they answer only to the Queen. *For that matter, the Queen may consider Kroft a good candidate for inclusion into the Grey Maidens (and all the grisly details that entails). The PCs may have to help her escape; and that should hammer home the point that clearly those who are in charge of Korvosa are no longer welcome. Just some ideas...I realize it doesn't really apply to the original thread question. How about: *Important Historical Figure days - liberators, patriots, specific leader or hero, etc
Just throwing some stuff out there; apologies for overlap. Harald wrote:
You may want to put in a spoiler alert for this thread - just my thinking. I'm going to talk about some of it here...be warned. 1) I'm agreeing with Ross on this one. It's in character for Endrin's alignment to clearly go against a monarch who it appears has violated several laws. I think what is also implied is that, unlike the PCs, the commanders are much more "enlightened" of Queen's activities - including some of the more questionable ones. A more direct guideline, you can always refer to the fact that Sable Company is not "commanded" by the Queen. Their commands and duties are tied to the Seneschal of Korvosa; that's something tied to the city's charter - something a lawful good character can reference for precedent to go against the Queen. This is further reinforced with her proclamations in light of the Seneschal's disapperance and the elevation of a new one by her. It's something else that she's not allowed to do by law. Until the old Seneschal is found; there's no reason Endrin can't defy her. If she's acting with such Draconian measures as quarantining whole parts of the city; enforcing a martial law without precedent; and intending to replace a corps of the Korvosan army with her own personal guard - then it could be argued Endrin's move, while brash, may be necessary in his eyes. She's clearly acting in unlawful manner. Finally, as for planning, he may have not had a chance to approach her until this meeting. If she's been has removed as has been implied - it may be that this was his one chance to get his shot - we don't know how long he's been planning this. Maybe since the old king died. As DM, if you need further details, you could always say that the Sensecahl may have hinted or told Endrin (as his direct commander) that he suspected that the Queen has been changed and why. Endrin may have been acting knowledge the PCs will only learn later. 2) As for the second one - I would claim DM fiat. The whole incident is designed to explain to the PC's that this woman is far more powerful than before - something has changed. Clearly, no one realized that she wasn't just a petty schemer - but something much more sinister and crafty. But if you want to get technical, if you have read the previews for COTCT - then you know that the Queen is essentially become a vessel for a Blue Dragon empowered by a god - Zon Kuthon I believe. So, I think you could argue that one crossbow bolt isn't going to kill her; and she probably is powerful enough to have criticalled an unprepared NPC. But that's just a guess on my part. ***EDIT: My apologies for misspellings. I also changed a few words to make my explantion more accurate to my intent, I hope.*** Amardolem wrote:
