I am so incredibly excited for this book! I don't know who to thank for the Pathfinder line of fantasy RPG but if someone who does reads this, please give them my absolute and heartfelt appreciation. My most favorite things in fantasy are constructs and magic items. Pathfinder ALWAYS keeps me entertained. Best of luck with this book! Does anyone know if there will be augments (similar in function to the magic item compendium's augment crystals)? Man! Seems like it was just yesterday that those two were teaming up to co-author "Shut In" in Dungeon #128: "Not all evil spawns in ancient ruins or on fiendish planes. Sometimes all corruption needs to take root is a jealous memory, cultivated bitterness, and a lonely place to bloom. . ." Still awesome. Congrats to you both! Hey, thanks everybody! Really appreciated! Erik is fine and continues his ever-expanding role as publisher. As for my title, we haven't had an editor-in-chief for some time and for the last three years my role has been considerably more than just "guy in charge of the editors." As the company continues to grow Erik's attentions rightly move toward exploring exciting new projects and possibilities, while I've been increasingly helming the day-to-day adventure of making sure Paizo Publishing keeps... well... publishing. What this promotion means for me is that now all of our editing and development officially falls under my umbrella, as well as much of the organization and outlining of new products - along with the champions of our individual product lines (and others, because coming up with new books and adventures is usually fun). Pretty much, if it has to do with our print projects, assigning them, developing them, editing them, approving them, getting feedback to authors, or any of the other bits that go into making a book happen (that isn't layout or on the design team's shoulders for the three hardcovers in our Pathfinder RPG line), it's on me and my crew's shoulders. Other than that, most of the other ramifications of our internal changes are mundane (or DOUBLE SUPER TOP SECRET... if that's a thing). What this means for folks playing the home game... is pretty much nothing. The crew that brought you everything you already love is the same crew bringing you everything you're going to love. Nothing to see here, move along. In other news, this has meant that Fiction Editor James Sutter has stepped up to Senior Editor to take on direct oversight of the wilder-than-you'd-expect world of editing everything for the Pathfinder brand, as well as captaining the most bombproof team of editing geniuses in gaming. Beyond this, James Jacobs continues to be our creative director, assuring elf eyes from Pathfinder Society to Pathfinder comics to Pathfinder Miniatures to Pathfinder Everything Else are appropriately shaped, continuity is maintained across our brands, ideas cleave to the highest calibers of coolness, and that his writer's callous never grows soft. Lead Designer Jason Bulmahn still heads up the design team and spends his days coming up with innovative new ways to kill characters (or is it monsters this week?). "Señor" Art Director Sarah Robinson continues her jet setting as head of the art team (She's at Spectrum Live this week, less than a week since her return from a con in Germany) and wrangler of a thousand incredibly artistic cats. And beyond that, everyone else - Andrew, Chris, Crystal, Judy, Mark, Mike, Patrick, Rob, Sean, and Stephen - got other rewards for their fantastically hard and continually awesome-under-fire work (except for Adam who just got a pat on the head and half a shiny red apple [and not even those] because he's still new; but we love him anyway). So that's the scoop! Now back to work! I love forums, but eventually most of them leave a bad taste in my mouth, and I have to leave. I have to hand it to Paizo and the moderators: these are some of the most pleasant forums I've used. Great job keeping the troll away. I've known from day one that I liked these boards because people treat each other like human beings here. I just realized a second big reason I love these forums: No signatures!!! Thank you, thank you Paizo! I just wanted to say something because I'm sure you get the occasional request to add signatures. All you have to do is go to any forum that allows them and see how and why they'll ruin these beautiful boards as you do. Even on forums that limit the size of the signatures, it's amazing how obnoxious people can still be with them. Kudos guys! Ask a Shoanti wrote:
Truth! He's returning to write a Pathfinder module with "No Response from Deepmar"—huzzah! As Dark Sasha said, there are plenty of other threads around to air your grievances regarding Razor Coast. Please keep them in those threads, rather than here.Congrats to Mike! And big props to the other top 4 as well, particularly Tom. This contest has never been this close, to my knowledge. It was CRAZY close. I think that speaks to how good all the submissions (and particularly those two) were this year. The contest is such a long, grueling process. You all--all 4 of you--really should be very, very proud of yourselves! I can't wait to see what you have in store for us, Mike. Congrats on the win and best of luck in your post-Superstar career. This will open doors. What you do with them is up to you. I, for one, can't wait to see what you have in store for us! But good news for the rest of us; that leaves room for another submitter. Not that I'm some big deal guy or something, but the thing that got me illustration work for Slumbering Tsar and Frog God Games was work I produced for Wayfinder. Some guy named Greg Vaughan saw a few pieces I had made and said "the kid's got moxie!"(at least, that's how I imagine it) and I wound up with a fifteen installment project on my hands. Sometimes people ask you to work for free and nothing comes of it but in the instance of Wayfinder, your work WILL actually be seen by people that can hire you. I'm James Keegan and I approve this message. I just wanted to send Neil Spicer belated Valentines day wishes from the entire Paizo editorial pit*. Neil's exceptionally nuanced analyses of each contestant's work should be one of the highlights of this year's show for anyone interested in freelancing for Paizo--he's really giving away the secrets here folks. But, for me and all of the developers and editors on the Paizo staff, Neil's writing advice is worth its weight in gold, as it's the exact sort of feedback we give our freelancers. It turns out that having awesome ideas isn't even half the battle of writing for RPGs (it's actually kind of expected). You've also got to make your ideas exciting to read and easy for your developers and editors to work with. Someone might have the coolest adventure ideas in the world, but if I have to rewrite every sentence, I'm never going to assign that freelancer work again. So, all you would-be designers out there, dust off your grammar books, read Paizo's published products and really consider the styles and formats you're seeing, and take a good look at Neil's advice throughout this competition. Below I've copied a number of the comments that provoked all this gushing. Our Favorite Judge wrote:
With all of that in mind, I strongly RECOMMEND Mr. Spicer advance to judge next year's competition**. Thanks Neil, from all of us in the pit! * And we love the rest of you judges too. Just slightly less then Neil. (Unless you're Sean... screw that guy.) ** Sorry dude. No rest for the wicked. Adam and I have been getting into trouble together at shows and rolling dice at the gaming table since we were too young to buy beer legally. Some of the best times of my life have been had with Daigle at my side, and I wouldn't even be writing in the biz if it wasn't for his relentless insistence that I get into the freelance game. Going to be tough not having him a mile up the road or next to me at our weekly game sessions, but I'm unbelievably excited that he's going to be doing what we love as a full-time job. Here's to you, Adam. Wind in your sails and all that. Paizo's getting the best of us, and it is good to know that my future work will be in the hands of my best friend. Don't you dare change a word of it! Hahaha. Sail away, and find your way to Mariana, my friend. I did not see a Congratulation post so adding one. Congrats Adam Daigle with your new job at Paizo! Now I will have an excuse on why I only see you at Conventions..;) Re: News Post. Sarah: God, who's going to get us pizza now!? We've hired Liz, and Mark, and now Daigle! F. I'm doing one about a candy apple red 1977 Trans Am that was boosted from this dude's trailer outside of Twin Falls. See, the fella just won four tickets on the radio to an Def Leppard concert in Spokane and rushes out of the house to pick up his best bud when he notices that his mean machine, the Red Raven, is gone. Next to the burn out marks in the gravel he spots one of his ex-girlfriend's AA tokens and knows that she took his ride to sell it to a pool shark in Billings. So the guy gathers all sorts of colorful characters from the trailer park and they head out in Scooter's tow truck to reclaim his cherry muscle car and make it to the show in time. The reward...the other three tickets and a kick ass time rockin' out, drinkin' some brews and checkin' out tha ladies. A flumph avatar would be greatly appreciated, please.
