While I'm not too excited by the dazzler at all, you have the chance to earn my vote with a fantastic villain. Good luck to ya!

Congrats Craig. I like this item and know one player of mine who would really want them!

This item grew on me after some time away working on my villain concept. At first I was just sort of "meh" about it. But reading it now, I think it's designed well. It's very specific in what it does. And it's a unique addition to the game that could benefit multiple types of PCs. Welcome to the Top 32! And good luck in the villain round...

My two-cents,
--Neil

DESCRIPTION
At first glance this gem appears to be nothing more than a red garnet. Upon closer inspection however, a tiny sunburst sigil can be seen etched onto its leading facet.
Anyone holding a Dazzler can use it to cast flare at will as a Swift Action.
They can also be attached to a Shield by a skilled Armorsmith (DC 15 Craft check).
Shield activation is the same as if it were held. Multiple Dazzlers can be affixed to a Shield as long as a Craft check is made for each. If a check is failed by more than 5 there is a 50% chance the Dazzler is ruined.
Additional Dazzlers can be activated from a Shield in the same round, but activating more than two Dazzlers in such a way becomes a Standard Action. For each additional Dazzler activated, the -1 penalty from each Dazzled Condition stacks (although the duration remains the same).
The number of Dazzlers that can be attached to a Shield are as follows: Buckler/Klar 2; Light Shield 4; Heavy Shield 6; Tower Shield 10.

The main reason I find this item disappointing is that I've seen it before. (Not 100% exact, but more than close enough)

In the module Of Sound Mind published by Firey Dragon and writen by Kevin "Piratecat" Kulp, you can pry the eyes out of the dragon statue and they do the same thing.

There's no way to know if the creator of this entry ever read that module (produced for D&D3e), though it reminded me immediately of the module.

Hi Jim,

I know there's not much else you can do but take my word for it, but I have never even heard of that Module before (and truth be told I haven't heard of the Company either - I hope I didn't make an "OMG you haven't heard of Fiery Dragon, we shun you now" confession there).

I have only been back playing D&D for about 3-4 years now after a lengthy break during 2e. I skipped 3.0 entirely and came back for the (what I didn't know then) twilight of 3.5.

Prior to the start of Pathfinder I had no experience with 3PP D&D in any way. This comunity has opened my eyes to other possibilies beyond Wizards of the Chequebook. And I now ahave a moderately healthy collection of 3PP 3.5 products, with thanks greatly to Paizo's and their 3.5 going out of business sales.

I feel a bit bummed now, I thought I'd tapped something new...

Firey Dragon was one of many 3rd publishers that appeared with 3.x OGL, there are more than a dozen of them, and I myself have never read one of their adventures.. I blame Monte Cook and Fantasy Flight Dragons for this

i would say its quite the bizzarre coincidense, we have seen in the rejected list of items more than one person saying that they had almost the same idea than items published there or you see one or other uisng similar themes

great minds think alike, is what they say.

Craig, you've got no reason to feel bummed about it. Great ideas strike people vast distances apart with no connection all the time. There are many examples throughout history.

I recommend trying to get your hands on a copy of the module since it is great fun to run and can easily be reworked for Pathfinder. Besides, now that you know you share some creative focus with another excelent designer you'll likely want to see what else you have in common! :)

Looking forward to your next submission, villains are always a fun topic. Good Luck!

Jim

I knew about fiery dragon but didn't know that Piratecat had written a module for them. I'll have to look it up now.

I know this year and the last, after I submit I get little worries that perhaps someone else somewhere had an idea just like mine or that I'm merely subconsciously regurgitating something I saw before. (Of course the fact that last year I entered a coin item didn't help those worries this year.) It's bound to happen though and I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Ah well, to paraphrase Ferris Bueller:

"Don't worry about it, I don't even have a Superstar Tag. I have to envy yours. "
