I have confused about the potion purchase ability. I understand the
limitations on cost but there is no list in the Paizo Players
Handbook of purchasable potions. Furthermore the rules state I can
buy any potion of a 0 or 1st level spell at a caster level 1. So
using that as a basis why can't I buy potions of shield, potions of
true strike, ect? Can I buy a potion of expeditious retreat which
costs 50 gp? My DM told me that the potions of true strike & potions
of shield were not purchasable but if there is no official list in
the Players book and I am following the rules cost then should I be
able to buy them? Lastly, if you go solely by the interpretation of
the cost for a potion in the Pathfinder Players Handbook then a 1st
level potion of enlarge would cost 50 gp and yet I have an AR that
still says it costs the 250 gp from D&D 3.5 DMG. I think Piazo should
putup some form of clarification on this otherwise players will be
buying potions they are not allowed to and paying incorrect prices.

1. Because they are not valid potions. Spells with a range of 'personal' are not valid potions.

2. No, due to #1.

3. The 3.5 DMG was sloppily done and copied those tables over with little to no adjustment. You will note that the wand list has a wand of ray of enfeeblement hieghtened to 4th level... seems a hefty price to defeat Minor Globes of Invulnerability... Potions of enlarge are 50gp/CL. Thus the potion of enlarge listed at 250gp is at 5th CL.

MillerHero, I really enjoyed your post listing all the possible potions

and oils. Very Comprehensive !

One thing that still confuses me ...

Why is that you still list potions as being 50 gp or 100 gp or less,
when it appears that they clearly cost more ?

If a caster is unable to get the Brew Potion Feat until 3rd level,
wouldn't the minimum cost of all 1 level potions automatically be 150 gp ???
(Spell Level x Caster Level X 50 gp plus any additional costly material
components)

The minimum cost of 0 level potions would be half as much at 75 gp.

Or am I missing something ?

Because the potion brewer sets the caster level, from the minimum level to cast the spell up to his own caster level.

A 3rd level character brewing a potion of a 1st level spell can make it at caster level 1, 2 or 3. Same for wands and scrolls, fyi.

Got it !

Thanks Twowlves for clearing up the confusion.

Hi

Just like to point out the 'Personal' limitation does not apply to wands.

And in PFS you can get wands of both Shield & True Strike (or any other 1st lvl spell, CL1), for 2 Prestige Awards each.

Thanks

True, though the spell would only be able to target the user of the wand, as the target of a personal spell is the caster, and the caster of a spell from a wand is the user of the wand. So you can get a consumable of Shield for your Wizard, or for any other character with Shield on their spell list, or a character with good Use Magic Device, but you can't get a consumable which allows the Barbarian to have easy access to True Strike.

Hi

I agree with Pedr, but it's only DC 20 for using a wand.

Easiest way for Barbarians to take True Strike is either to take a level in a spellcasting class, or have a Cleric with Luck Domain cast Imbue with Spell Ability.

Thanks
Paul H
