A 3rd level Fey Bloodline Sorcerer gets Entangle as a spell known. Can she purchase and use scrolls of Entangle?

My understanding is that it would have to be an arcane scroll for her to activate it w/o using UMD. Is that reasonably available for purchase, as only Fey Sorcerers with Scribe Scroll would be able to make them in the world of Golarion? Seems pretty rare to me. If it's allowed, it would also have to be a scroll made at a 3rd level CL, correct? If she were to find a scroll of entangle in a scenario, is it assumed to be Divine? What about scrolls of Protection from Evil and other cross-over spells? Personally, I would love to see the arcane vs. divine scroll thing disregarded for PFS play.

I would take this question to the RPG forums instead of the organized play (PFS) forums.

The Pathfinder RPG Rules Forum

A wand yes, since the only thing that matters with a wand is if the spell is on your list, the scroll no. The wand is a spell trigger which is much simpler to use (so simple you don't even provoke while doing so) the scroll is spell completion however and how you complete a divine spell is much different than how you complete an arcane spell.

HOWEVER: The sorcerer could scribe an arcane scroll of entangle.

Except that for the RPG it's pretty clear. What I'm concerned with is how scrolls that could potentially be arcane or divine are handled in PFS games. And I want to know if odd cases (like entangle) are available to characters.

Which is why it could possibly exist in the world (i.e. bought between scenarios). It's not that much different that stating that you bought a potion made by a paladin instead of a cleric in order to get certain potions cheaper. (which from my understanding, is ok by the rules)

I still think the bigger question is: "If a scroll is found in a scenario, how do we know if it's arcane or divine? Should GMs assume that it's both?"

Speaking of RAW only:

1) Yes if she purchases an arcane copy.

2) Yes, the DM would need to adjudicated whether or not you can buy an arcane Entangle.

3) Is it a 2nd level spell for Fey Sorcerers? If so it would be CL 4 not CL 3.

4) Yes, if not specified it would be assumed to be Druid.

It's a first level spell for Fey Sorcerers.

Why would it be assumed Druid? Why not Ranger?Which again points to the bigger question.

You find a chest, and inside the chest is a scroll of Protection from Evil. No where in the scenario does it say who created it. You have a wizard and Cleric in the party. Who can use it in the next Act?

Why would it be assumed Druid?

p550 limits it to Wizard / Cleric, there is not as much info in 3.p as there was in 3.5 rules. In 3.5 rules, they listed a progression (iirc Wizard, Cleric, Druid, Bard, Ranger, Paladin) for any spell not described.

If there were no Wizard/Cleric version of that spell but a Druid version, in 3.5 it would be a Druid scroll. Since we now have no rules, it is up to the GM.

Back to the Fey Sorcerer, if it is a 1st level spell it would be CL 1. When copied into a spellbook, it would become whatever it was for the one copying the scroll (no rule explicitly says this but rules say you cast from your spell list only.)

Yes, a fey sorcerer can buy an arcane scroll of entangle. This assumes (in a wave the magic wand, say-it's-so kind of way) that there are other fey sorcerers out there creating these scrolls for you to purchase, but I'm okay with that.

But to his question relevant to PFS specifically, how are found-in-scenario Scrolls of Entangle treated?

Are they Divine by default, and only Arcane (Fey-Bloodline) if specified?
Or are they "not specified" as either Arcane/Divine for convenience of both Druids and Fey-Sorceror PCs?

For the fey sorcerer, they are arcane.

So for a wizard the scroll is instead divine?

To reiterate the more general question:

If I find a scroll of Protection from Evil in a treasure chest, is it divine or arcane if not specified?

No. Wizards don't have entangle on their spell lists. I'm only talking about fey sorcerers who have entangle on their spell lists as part of their bloodline bonus spell.

We should as developers be watching for these sorts of cross-pollinated spells and avoid putting them in places where they warrant extra descriptors like "divine" and "arcane." If you found that scroll on a wizard, you'd know it was arcane, for example. If you're finding it randomly disassociated from an NPC then we should be noting if its divine or arcane.
