Smokestick: This alchemically treated wooden stick instantly creates thick, opaque smoke when burned. The smoke fills a 10-foot cube (treat the effect as a fog cloud spell, except that a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke in 1 round). The stick is consumed after 1 round, and the smoke dissipates naturally after 1 minute.

Smoke Effects

A character who breathes heavy smoke must make a Fortitude save each round (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or spend that round choking and coughing. A character who chokes for 2 consecutive rounds takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. Smoke obscures vision, giving concealment (20% miss chance) to characters within it.

Breathing in thick alchemical smoke cannot be good for you. I can understand giving out the rules for fog cloud to cover visibility issues and the like... but shouldn't a smoke stick also be smokey?

Its fantasy. Its alchemy. Smoke sticks produce highly oxyginated smoke breathing is no problem.

You can however introduce stick bombs which have the same effect as smoke sticks but also emulate small stincking clouds, but these should of course be more expensive.

If I wanted the effects of a stinking cloud I could use the Nauseous Smoke Sticks from the Eberron Campaign Setting. The Nauseated condition is pretty nasty...but if you want to remain under cover you can stay inside the effect of a stinking cloud spell forever with no ill effects past some stomach pains.

Rather than that, we already have a little used mechanic for Smoke Effects that might be fun to use a little more. Perhaps I'll just create "smoke pots" that create the effects of thick smoke. Using this you could actually "smoke" someone out of a room. You would/could not stay within the effects of heavy smoke for very long without eventually passing out from nonlethal damage. Its more of a reason NOT to stay within the smoke.

I don't see why the Smoke Effect rules shouldn't apply to Smokesticks per RAW.
The Smokestick say it creates SMOKE. The Smoke Effect rules apply to SMOKE.

Agreed.

I thought so to. You'd think they would give a nod towards the smoke effects ... but instead they specify as "fog cloud". Thus the confusion. Mist and Smoke are two separate things. One being harmless water vapor and the other being ash/soot/carbon. However, both are particle effects that provide concealment.

I can always rule for my own games that smokesticks produce smoke effects in addition to the basics of the fog cloud descriptor. Unless an official ruling comes down, I guess I can just talk to my DM however, and see what he thinks.

The smoke effect would have been "nodded" to if it had been the intention for it to work that way. It is just a means to gain concealment.

One wants it to have a smoke effect that is reasonable too. You should however consider adjusting the prize of smoke sticks as they might have more varied/lethal uses.

Again... guess I can talk to my DM or create a new item called "smoke pot".

Smoke Pot: This alchemically filled fist sized iron pot is designed to produce heavy choking black smoke when its wick is lit. Much like a smoke stick it produces a thick cloud of smoke that instantly fills a 10 ft. cube and a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke in 1 round. Otherwise the thick smoke takes 1d4 minutes to dissipate. Any creatures in the smoke suffer from smoke effects and must make a Fortitude save each round (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or spend that round choking and coughing. A character who chokes for 2 consecutive rounds takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. Smoke obscures vision, giving concealment (20% miss chance) to characters within it.

I would PRICE it at double the cost of a smoke stick. :)

The dc to craft it should not be much higher than a smoke stick.
