My wife is trying to put together a more elemental themed Druid and wants a small elemental as her animal companion. Is there any legit way of doing so within the RAW? (Other than taking a level of Wizard.)

I think Complete Mage has an Elemental Companion alternate clas feature. But that's 3.5, not PFRPG>

Of course there is!
It involves her talking to your DM about her desire to have an elemental companion and then working with your DM to figure out how to make it work in their game. Maybe the DM will want her to take Leadership and get a spell cast or to go on a special quest to obtain the elemental's friendship.
