If you are a 3rd level Mage or higher and have cast Flaming Sphere can you move the sphere (move action) and still cast a spell? If no, can you choose not to move the sphere and cast a spell?
A buddy and I don’t see eye to eye on this. I think you could still cast spells, (casting time permitting) he says no other spells can be cast while this spell is in effect. I say Flaming Sphere has no concentration requirement in its duration descriptor.
So, in short who is right?

Yes. For the same reason you can walk over there and still cast a spell. Your move action puts no restriction on your standard action unless it says otherwise, and Flaming Sphere does not.

You can still cast while the sphere is in effect. Moving the sphere requires you to give up your move action, but it does not require you to concentrate to keep it in existence. You can still cast whether you move the sphere or not.

From the spell description...

Quote:

The sphere moves as long as you actively direct it (a move action

for you); otherwise, it merely stays at rest and burns.

The spell's pretty clear on this one:

Additionally, as you indicated, the spell has no concentration component (it stays still if you don't move it). Since you the caster get one standard action and one move action every round, you can move the sphere as your move action and cast a spell as your standard action (level 5 druids rejoice from your calling lightning and moving the sphere each round).
