My "master of walls" summoner would like to know if it is possible to trap enemies in a wall of stone (box shape) and surround the "oven" with a wall of fire (heat facing inward) in order to cook the trapped occupants alive? Or would the total cover protect them?

I'm asking because it isn't an area or targeted effect in the traditional sense, it is simply "waves of heat" which I think would heat up a big stone box quite readily. What do you think?

(Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion Subscriber)

I think the total cover would stop any heat damage, but I really like the concept. A forcecage should work since there are tiny openings for the heat to pass through.

Yeah it takes too long for stone to heat up (like hours and hours) to be effective and the walls would definitely block the line of effect from the walls of fire.

Just look up how long a brick fired pizza oven takes to warm up after say the owners vacation or a Blast Furnace in a factory after a shut down for repair.

I guess I will have to shape the "oven" to have small holes then.

Immediately, total cover would protect them.

If you were to make a permanent wall of fire, then after a certain amount of time the fire would eventually begin to raise the ambient temperature inside the stone enclosure. I'd use the heat danger rules. . .

PRD Heat Dangers:
Heat Dangers

Heat deals nonlethal damage that cannot be recovered from until the character gets cooled off (reaches shade, survives until nightfall, gets doused in water, is targeted by endure elements, and so forth). Once a character has taken an amount of nonlethal damage equal to her total hit points, any further damage from a hot environment is lethal damage.

A character in very hot conditions (above 90° F) must make a Fortitude saving throw each hour (DC 15, +1 for each previous check) or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage. Characters wearing heavy clothing or armor of any sort take a –4 penalty on their saves. A character with the Survival skill may receive a bonus on this saving throw and might be able to apply this bonus to other characters as well (see the skill description). Characters reduced to unconsciousness begin taking lethal damage (1d4 points per hour).

In severe heat (above 110° F), a character must make a Fortitude save once every 10 minutes (DC 15, +1 for each previous check) or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage. Characters wearing heavy clothing or armor of any sort take a –4 penalty on their saves. A character with the Survival skill may receive a bonus on this saving throw and might be able to apply this bonus to other characters as well (see the Survival skill in Using Skills). Characters reduced to unconsciousness begin taking lethal damage (1d4 points per each 10-minute period).

A character who takes any nonlethal damage from heat exposure now suffers from heatstroke and is fatigued. These penalties end when the character recovers from the nonlethal damage she took from the heat.

Extreme heat (air temperature over 140° F, fire, boiling water, lava) deals lethal damage. Breathing air in these temperatures deals 1d6 points of fire damage per minute (no save). In addition, a character must make a Fortitude save every 5 minutes (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage. Those wearing heavy clothing or any sort of armor take a –4 penalty on their saves.

Boiling water deals 1d6 points of scalding damage, unless the character is fully immersed, in which case it deals 10d6 points of damage per round of exposure.

The question is the amount of time necessary to heat the stone to the level required. Just by looking at a random google search for heating up an oven of that size given the size/heat of a wall of fire, I'd say it would take anywhere from 30 minutes (assuming the wall of fire is adjacent to the stone prison) to hours to raise the internal temperature up to extreme heat. You'll have to judgment call that one.

If you surrounded them on three sides with stone and one with fire, it would work. Not having the spell descriptions in front of me I'm not sure this would work, but its worth a mention.

I wolud like to bring here the interpretation of the Reflex save made to avoid being trapped by a Wall of Stone.
Let's say I am a level 15th caster, so I can create 15 squares of wall.
Suppose my enemy (E) is adjacent to a natural wall (W)

W
W
W
WE
W
W
W
W

Now I cast Wall of Stone(S), half thickness and 10' high, so it rises up to the ceiling:

WSSSS
W___S
W___S
WE__S
W___S
W___S
WSSSS

What happens if the Enemy makes his save? Is he outside the wall or what?

Considering how big the enclosure is and that the target doesn't appear terribly mobile (leaning up against the natural wall?) I don't think he would get the save at all.

Time isn't too important for my oven trick. Wall of Stone is instantaneous and Wall of Fire can be maintained via concentration indefinitely. All I need worry about is someone breaking out prematurely.

Damn. I was hoping this was going to be an "is this evil" thread...

A 1 square foot hole in a 5 ft section of the wall DOES NOT block line of effect. Shape accordingly.

Oh I will. *evil grin*

EDIT: Wait. What? I read that wrong.

its funny, i saw this and my first thought was "wall of iron, heat metal"

hmm, make the walls, then summon a big fire elemental inside the box to play with the enemy?
