On page 254 says "you must win an opposed Charisma check to convince it to do anything it wouldn't ordinariliy do." Does this mean that if it fails the save and then you beat it in an opposed Charisma check, you could have the target of this spell attack its allies?

Possibly. It depends on how you set it up. I would treat it as a guy who is more susceptible to being conned, not to a guy who is totally mentally dominated.

There are plenty of movie examples where a guy is conned into attacking his buddies. I'd use those as a reference.

Attack it's allies possibly, or to spare your allies. Depending on the person they are.

Andoran (RPG Superstar 2010 Top 8)

The spell says that the charmed person regards you as a trusted friend and ally and that his attitude toward you is "friendly." Unfortunately, his attitude toward his allies is probably "friendly" too. You'd be asking a newly acquired trusted friend and ally to chose sides and he's probably known them longer... ;)

I think you'd have to be pretty dang persuasive for it this strategy work in general cases though. I could even see the charmed person trying to make all nice, nice and persuade you and his allies to get along instead. :)

After all is said and done, charm person is also only a 1st level spell too. :)

A Charmed individual treats you like a friend but it doesnt mean they treat their 'former' allies any worse (unless for some reason it didnt really like their former allies - like some downtrodden Ogre that is treated like a Packmule by its Orc 'allies' for example).

A Charmed creature treats both groups (its present allies and the spellcaster of the Charm spell) as friends (assuming as I said above it considered its former comrades friends of a sort to begin with), if both persisted in exchanging blows a 'Charmed' creature may try to break up the fight instead of smashing down on one side or another. That being said, a convincing Charisma check can 'convince' the creature that its former 'friends' arent really friends at all, they abuse it, etc and a creature so convinced might very well turn around and attack its former comrades.
