Do you have to light it or does it have a chemical reaction on hit that causes combustion?
My understanding ever since alchemist fire was brought to my attention (3.0) is that it is a volatile colloid that combusts upon contact with air. It is kept sealed in glass or ceramic flasks that are non-reactive, but it explodes violently when the container is broken (as per lobbing it into a room full of goblins). As such, it does not need to be lit, but it does not ignite underwater or without hitting a somewhat resilient surface.
that is my understanding as well (as the rogue found out in my last gaming session, when she pried open a sealed ceramic pot the party had found on a corpse, much to her dismay).
Yes, it is an alchemical agent that ignites upon contact with air, so simply throwing the container and having it break on impact is enough.
