[4 Winds Fantasy Gaming] Paths of Power: A Sourcebook of Base & Prestige Classes in late October
Lyingbastard,

Well, we look forward to seeing the reaction to the samurai class as well.

There's a preview for the arms and armor for some of the new classes posted on the artist's deviantArt page:

Samurai, Gladiator, Blackguard (Anti-Paladin) Armor

Samurai weaponry

Gladiator and other new weapons

I am interested although I just hope you don't come down with the same sort of problems Nick Logue has been plagued with for Razor Coast.

I'm not sure what those issues are. We just ran into some unavoidable issues that forced delay upon us is all.

Nick has run into a series of RL problems that has so far pushed back his first product a year. Yes a whole year. Needless to say he ran into a lot of unexpected problems. That and I think he underestimated just how much work would be involved in doing his own products on his own.

Ah! I see. Well, it is certainly a lot of work, that's for sure. And Paths of Power won't be pushed back a year, just a few weeks (in fact, the print edition may not even be late, based on our earlier projections, or if it is only by a week or so).

We're catching up on work for Paths of Power a LOT faster than we anticipated. We're looking at release in about three weeks now, maybe sooner for the PDF edition.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN DESTINY

Few things serve to define a character as much as their class does. A character’s class is more than what they do, it’s who they are. It is a reflection of the character’s beliefs and what they hold dear, and explains why they do much of what they do. It serves them as their profession or vocation in life. Sometimes a character is drawn to a specific class because of their beliefs; sometimes they mold their attitudes to fit the class they have chosen. Either way, nothing represents a character quite like their class does.

Just as we in the real world can choose from many different paths in our lives, so should our characters. Go beyond the standard options with Paths of Power.

Paths of Power details five new base classes (Anti-paladin, Gladiator, Samurai, Voyageur & Witch), three prestige classes (Child of Bast, Crypt Stalker & Envenomed), and four class options for player characters (Air, Earth, Fire & Water Elementalist “schools” for Wizards). Also included are three classes that are designed specifically for non-player characters, but that can be used for player characters as well (Captain, Courtesan & Sycophant).

There are new feats and skills for the classes and class options, as well as spell lists and new spells for the spellcasting classes. New equipment and magic items unique to some of the classes are included. Characters with the same class tend to gravitate toward each other and work together – a number of organizations that members of the new classes might belong to are outlined as well.

With both PC and NPC options, Paths of Power will be a wonderful asset for players and Game Masters alike!

Paths of Power will be available on November 27, 2009. Paperback will retail for $18.95US, PDF for $10.95US.

You can get a sneak-peek at the cover art HERE.

I assume you are asking about Luven Lightfinger's Gear & Treasure Shop? It will be a catalog of new gear, armor, weapons, alchemical items, clothing, and magic items. We'll be doing an official (more detailed) announcement on it around the time PoP is released in a couple of weeks.

Yep I was and what I thought it would be, but you never know. It could have just been a magic item book, or just mundane or both. Which seems to be the case it will have both.

Indeed it will. It will be weighted towards non-magical gear, but there will be magic items.

Draco Caeruleus,

I like the sound of this product, especially the elementalist wizards. Are these supposed to be specialists in the same basic way as the specialists in the Core Rulebook? Will spells be divided into elemental schools so that you can pick specialized and prohibited elements?

I look forward to checking out this product!

Indeed that is the way the elementalists have been set up. Each of the four elements has been set up in the manner of the school specialists, and we have broken down the spells by the four element types. At first, we thought to place certain schools within certain elements, but quickly realized that some schools have spells that could belong to different elements. There are even some spells that belong to two different elements because of the way they function.

Keep in mind that we didn't stat it out as a complete class - you still have to be a wizard as per the Core Rulebook, but you specialize in one of the four elements instead of the ten schools of magic.

I'm glad you're excited about the book, and I hope you like the Elemental Wizards as much as we do!

Yeah, it's basically envisioned as a somewhat more primal wizard, more attuned to the elements that make up the world, instead of the more abstract basis that traditional spell schools have. Not that they're less intelligent, by any means, it's just an entirely different type of focus / orientation, so to speak. Some of the new elemental magics that we'll be introducing are just going to be plain awesome, so I hope people get a lot of enjoyment out of playing this class option.

Good point, Sean! I forgot to mention that while their isn't a lot of new spells in this book, many of the new spells that are present are arcane spells geared towards elementalists.

Draco Caeruleus,

Oh, one more question, if I may. Will the elementalist wizards be based primarily on classic elements - air, earth, fire, and water - or will they be more focused on the energy types that d20 games associate with the elements - electricity, acid, fire, and cold? While I have a preference, I'd be happy whichever way it goes, but I'm curious.

I appreciate the time all of you take to communicate with us, by the way. :)

Good question about the last post. I would like more focused on the real elements myself. But I understand if you couldn't do all new spell lists for them, with mostly new spells.

The Elemental Wizard is based on the classic elements of Air, Earth, Fire & Water. It is broken down into those "schools" and the spell list is divided up by those four elements. Fire spells obviously went into the Fire Element. Lightning/electricity spells went into Air. Force spells went into Air or Earth, depending on what they did. Earth- or stone-based spells went into Earth. Some spells are actually in two different schools because of how they function or the results they produce. A few spells are in what we call "Universal Element", because they have elements of all four elements in them (the various Elemental Body spells and the various Prismatic spells, for example). A few spells do not easily fit into one of the four classic elements, and we didn't try to force them in. Elemental wizards can still learn them, but they aren't elemental spells.

Draco Caeruleus wrote:

You bet! That's what we're here for.

There are only about 30 new spells in this book, for various classes. We did focus on element spells for higher levels spells (6th+ level where there were fewer spells for some of the elements).

The spell list does include arcane spells from our Book of Arcane Magic, for those who also have that book, though BoAM is by no means required to play an Elemental Wizard.

Well, that's real nice to hear, and one of the things we try and do is include things that we think gamers will enjoy, that aren't imbalanced (You should have seen my original workup of the Gladiator!), and that we, as gamers ourselves, want to see in a game.
