Riding Dogs are Evil

Okay, so in my campaign today, the players went up against goblins, dire rats, and a pair of riding dogs. The riding dogs were the most nasty things they came across. Between their trip attack and the major amount of damage that they do with thier bite, I would almost expect that they need to be CR 1 instead of CR 1/2. However, my player's were much more annoyed by the goblins, simply because they have such a high AC that a first level character has a hard time hitting them.
