Most GMs in general will be more than happy to leave that part of the donkey work on the player. Yep Freddy, fun is the most important. That is why I refuse to play with a real opposistional GM. The game should be about the characters and the story, and not trying to kill them all the time. A death here or there is fine, as long as it is either early in the game, or there is a way to rez the character. But, getting attached to a character just to have him die, then making a new one is no fun at all.

The text on eidolons says that they generally function as summoned creatures, and none of the exceptions (e.g., being able to attack creatures warded by magic circle type spells) exclude this. Thus I would assume that any equipment you put on your eidolon remains when it vanishes, and when you re-summon it, you'll have to re-equip it.

Since you are presumably summoning it outside of battle at the start of the day, equipping it should not be a problem. However, it is possible that having it die in an inconvenient location could make retrieving its gear difficult, if not impossible.

But the posibility of losing it is what makes the bond so special. Also, not excercising full effect of bad decisions and poor tactics encourages them.

Don't get me wrong, I love tension and the occasional death, but in stories and books, there aren't party wipes. Imagine LotR if the fellowship all died. It would suck. Contentious GMs are boring. I played in a game once, where we spent 2 weeks coming up with higher level characters (I believe the mod was Paladin in Hell), background stories, leadup stuff, and we were killed by an invisible 2 headed dragon, literally, 10 minutes after walking into the mod.

on the other hand, to plagerise from Family guy " remember the giant eagle? Why didn't they just ride them to Mordor? " You can't just let the players do whatever they want, or if you have things that are to happen, limit their way to avoid them.

I am almost done my summoner and his Eidolon. I am going with a half-orc, who was abused and beaten by his orc tribe, because he was weak and sickly, until one day, he was being roughed up by other young orcs, and a creature materialized and killed them all. he was left to die by the other orcs, and this creature always came to his aid when he called it. In the following years, he embraced the human side, and the good side of his heritage(NG)and developed the ability to call on extraplanar creatures, but there was always the beastial,rage filled Eidolon to protect him and harm those who would do him harm.

Kinda cheesy, but it should be cool, meeting the hatred he encounters with good, and always having the beastial, violent side of his nature just around the corner.

I think I am going to focus on buffs,since I don't envision him taking offensive spells. Buffs and defensive minded, maxing out UMD as well.

unless you took limbs(arms) with your quadraped, you can't take claws because they require the limbs(arms) evolution.

Not true. There was an errata to allow 1 claws evolution on a quadraped so that they could mimic many monsters, like cats.

I made a really cool halfling summoner with a small serpentine winged eidolon. They both fired a literal rain of arrows at their foe while flying.


An interesting idea would be to base a summoner off Dr. Morbius from Forbidden Planet. Remember him? In this case, the summoner would be a highly intellectual but pacifistic man, and the eidolon would represent a manifestation of his id, which lurks and follows him around, coming forward and attacking when the summoner feels threatened. Having the eidolon start as largly uncontrolled, and slowly reconciling oneself with its existence, would be an intriguing character path to follow.


My google-fu is not that great, as I have been looking for a few minutes, til my attention was grabbed by Sportscenter. If someone could link it, I would appreciate it. Would love to read it.

The halfling souds cool. I was thinking of another cool one, but the GM for RotRL just played a kobold in Freeport, would be a Kobold Summoner with an Eidolon that resembled a Dragon. There are alot of evolutions that could make it very dragonlike. From what I understand, RotRL takes you to about 14-15, if I were the Kobold, getting the Eidolon powered up would take longer, I think.

As an aside, I was reading the other classes and I really like Oracle and Cavalier. I love the idea behind Inquisitor, but I agree with an earlier post, why teamwork? You would think an Inquisitor, unless working with others of his faith, would be very much self sufficient.

The new on board search function has been greatly refined. I used it to find a post that pointed out the pdf had been updated. Perhaps you have an older version. It now reads;

Simply download the APG Final Playtest PDF again. Those modifications were included in the last version.

Well, doesn't that allow a biped to by them for the legs also...?


Just to throw in my 2cp, I recently decided to retire my summoner in the 5th level game we were playing. I just switched from the DMs chair back to a player with my group. The rest of the party continued to play their existing characters and I brought in a new summoner. After a few sessions of play a couple of the players mentioned that my eidolon made the rest of the melee fighters redundant. The cleric and fighter/cleric in the party both became charged with just keeping the eidolon up so that he could deal horrific amounts of damage and drop the enemy quickly. As a biped with 4 claw attacks, the eidolon was truly a combat monster compared to the rest of the party and was impacting the enjoyment of the game by the rest of the players.

I have since swapped out the summoner for a druid.


So I'm a bit confused about one thing.

With no evolutions, a biped still gets 2 claw attacks at d4+strength bonus. I am right here? Since a biped starts with limbs, does it start with the claws, or do I have to buy them?


Just re read it (the new one) and it sayd they start with claws and limbs, so I answered my own question.
