I was able to locate all the Animal Companions listed in the Core Rule Book, defined/mentionned in the Bestiary, EXCEPT for the CAMEL...

So the question is: Where are camels hiding in the Bestiary?!

As they're only referenced on the Ankheg page, as food, they might have been eaten, I mean, cut for space.

Camel

Starting Statistics: Size Large; Speed 50 ft.; AC +1 natural armor; Attack bite (1d4) or spit (ranged touch attack, target is sickened for 1d4 rounds, range 10 feet); Ability Scores Str 18, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 2, Wis 11, Cha 4; Special Qualities low-light vision, scent.

4th-Level Advancement: Ability Scores Str +2, Con +2.

Got this from the Druid list on the PRD.

Indeed... It is weird, as all the other Animals have a presence in the Bestiary!! So why the exception with Camels?

I wonder if this is intentionnal, or not.

It seems you misread my initial post... hehe

Camels weren't exciting enough to warrant info in the bestiary...besides they spit on the other animals and so it was hard to keep all the other animals happy...har har har

That is interesting though...maybe because they don't have any real special abilities and are relatively uncommon in most circumstance they were just low animal on the "to be cut" list?

You don't need Bestiary stats if you have the Animal Companion starting stats... (it was probably cut for space because it is unlikely to get ever get into combat; i.e. even if it is a special mount/animal companion, it probably will only get used as a vehicle for the rider rather than an accessory to combat).

I mean, if you ride a lion, you probably want to make it part of your attack routine, and give it feats that help the lion hit hard; if you ride a camel you probably want to give it: Run, Endurance, Sandwalker (LoF player's guide), Dodge, Mobility

PS: Erik Mona agreed with me in a previous post that giving Endurance AND Sandwalker to the camel is probably not a game-breaking factor... so if you have a 10th level druid or paladin, your selected feats could be:

1) Dodge, Mobility, Run, Diehard and Toughness (with Endurance and Sandwalker as bonus feats) for maximum survivability (Con boosts at 4 and 8 HD); or

2) Power Attack, Improved Overrun, Run, Improved Natural Armor, and Greater Overrun (with Endurance and Sandwalker as bonus feats) (Str boost at 4 HD and Int boost at 8 HD to gain Int 3 so as to be able take Greater Overrun at 9 HD)

Well, the truth about the camel is... it ran away.

Somebody chased it with a proverbial straw. It might have been me...

Sorry TM.. i thought you were looking for the stats for the camel. hehe

On that note, where's the packmule? I refused to believe that I play with the only people who consider the packmule an important and vital member of a young adventuring party (esp given the popularity of dungeon siege)

Can you see the lady in the Camel?

We managed to fit an awful lot of animals into the Bestairy... but we couldn't fit all of them. Among the animals left out we had to scrap the camel, the hippopotamus, the dire weasel, the badger and dire badger, the manta ray, whales, about 40 different types of horse (in which I include the pack mule... just use stats for a pony and you're good!), a bunch of dinosaurs and prehistoric critters, and so on.

In many cases these animals will show up in Bestiary 2. Until then the best bet is to either use the 3.5 stats for them or to fake it by using a similar animal's stat block.

At least we're still statted as animal companions for druids. That's something, right?

LOL - I opened this thread and thought, "I don't remember starting this thread."

Silly limited avatar list!

"Sallah, I said no camels!"

Aiyee!

So.....was in a mod where people were riding camels, and pondering whether to ride them into combat....of course, the difficulty of non battle trained mounts came up....

So of course, what people now need are...

Battle Camels!

Sorry guys... I think mr. Conan over there had punched the camel´out of the Bestiary all the way into the future...

If there's one thing I learned from the Planescape setting's stance on deities, it's that creatures without stat blocks are indestructible forces of nature far beyond the combat capabilities of any mere mortal. ;)

Yeah, it's unfortunate, but it is understandable. I'd have a much easier time improvising stats for something like a packmule or a camel than a Froghemoth.

In the Core, the camel is a d4 dmg. There is obviously no numbers on his attack.
The Bestiary says: Natural Attacks Most creatures possess one or more natural attacks (attacks made without a weapon). These attacks fall into one of two categories, primary and secondary attacks. Primary attacks are made using the creature's full base attack bonus and add the creature's full Strength bonus on damage rolls. Secondary attacks are made using the creature's base attack bonus –5 and add only 1/2 the creature's Strength bonus on damage rolls. If a creature has only one natural attack, it is always made using the creature's full base attack bonus and adds 1-1/2 the creature's Strength bonus on attack rolls.(I'm guessing that the 1-1/2 Str bonus to a attack rolls is an error and they mean damage)

This increase does not apply if the creature has multiple attacks but only takes one. If a creature has only one type of attack, but has multiple attacks per round, that attack is treated as a primary attack, regardless of its type. Table: Natural Attacks by Size lists some of the most common types of natural attacks and their classifications.

It also says, in the Bestiary under Animal: Proficient with its natural weapons only. A noncombative herbivore treats its natural weapons as secondary attacks. Such attacks are made with a –5 penalty on the creature's attack rolls, and the animal receives only 1/2 its Strength modifier as a damage adjustment.

That's what it was in 3.5. Now which one do I use?
Also, is it possible to use the war camel from Sandstorm and tweak it per Core? Or is that just making things even more complicated? Is a war camel even considered for the Bestiary 2?

Outside of all that, the class levels animal companions now get, is that all they get? There are no more feats included with the creature? No more HD as well? You just get only what the class lvls give you?

While we are at it, in the Core Rulebook in the opening art work for the Spells section there are these "tentacle-faced hounds", are there any riles for those somewhere, and if so, where?

Chapter Two of the Second Darkness adventure path... they come from outer space and do not need to breathe as a result. They create metallic cocoons that are very valuable (mithral like metal property, only very antimagic; i.e. the arcane failure chance becomes so high that armors made of these can't be worn by arcane spellcasters, although very useful for divine casters and plain rogues and fighters...)

I understand the need to cut back on all the existing animals (or fantastic ones..) I was just pointing out that the Camel was the only one listed as an Animal Companion, that didn't make it in the Bestiary.

Would if be possible for Paizo to release a small "bestiary II" preview that would include it? Or perhaps just plug it on the Online PRD? That would be cool :)

Thanks!
