I was at a recent convention and it was mentioned that I should buy a Mighty Mastercrafted weapon.

So I've been trying to do my due diligence on this and have found the mastercrafted quality and enhancement for my weapon, but I find no reference to the "Mighty" feature upgrade?

So I throw this out there:

What is the Mighty upgrade to a weapon?

What does it benifit?

Where do I find the rules for this? (I cannot find them in the Players core rulebook).

Thanks

Robyn

Was the weapon a bow? You can purchase "mighty" versions of bows; look up Longbows and Shortbows in the weapons chapter, I believe.

Yes, the weapon in question was a bow.

I have looked in both the PDF and the hardbound on the word "mighty" and am unable to locate any reference to all of this.

Mighty is sometimes used as shorthand for a composite bow that is upgraded to allow it's use with a characters strength bonus (p 147).

So a 'mighty (+1) masterwork composite longbow' would be a MW comp. longbow that a Str 12 or higher character could use to get a +1 to damage, from his Strength bonus. Even if he had Str 14 or more, he'd still only be able to get +1 Str bonus damage from that particular bow, but he could also purchase a 'mightier' bow.

Ah, now that makes sense!!

So the player was just suggesting that I buy a strength compensated Composite Long Bow in addition to getting it Mastercrafted for the bonus to hit!

Mastercrafted

A minor nitpick, since we're discussing official jargon: It's officially called masterwork, not mastercraft. Nothing wrong with the latter term, except that you won't find it in the rules.

By the way, mighty used to be an official term for crossbows that let you use a strength bonus with it. It was there in D&D 3.0 if I remember correctly, but was removed in 3.5 (the ability to make those bows support higher strength scores remained - they just got rid of the mighty descriptor.)

I have (and I think most people have) referred to strength modified bows, as mighty bows. Out of curiousity though, I looked through some sourcebooks and Google searches and I can't find an official 3.5ed reference to it. Just one of those oddities where that's what everyone calls it, but its not an official game term.

The 3.0 term "Mighty" went the way of the dodo in the 3.5 upgrade and was replaced wity "composite" longbows and shortbows which are assumed to be made for adding strength damage for higher costs.

My records got less complicated by referring to the strength score of the bonus rather than the bonus itself, which is why I believe the Mighty has survived, to differentiate the str min/dmg from an enhancement bonus.

I much prefer a +3 Composite Longbow (Str14) rather than a +3 Composite Longbow (+2) or a +3 (Mighty +2) Composite Longbow or whatever other shorthand is available. Less confusion as to which number is which.
