One of my players is running a ranger. He really like the dimension door ability of the old horizon walker, and wanted to try it out without taking that class. So I am looking at designing an item to do it.

some possibilites:
-wand - he technically can tuse, but could take a level of something to do so.
-cloak of the mountebank with more charges/day
-intelligent item with the +56,000 ability on it.
-wondrous item with 50 charges.

thoughts? What is the best way to go, and the cheapest?

My actual suggestion would be making it a feat, with high ranks in Knowlege Geography and the ability to cast 2nd level Druid or Ranger divine spells required.

But, if you wanted to make it a pure item, let's run the numbers. (I'm using the 3.5 formula because I don't know PF's and don't feel like hunting it down. Hopefully their the same)

Dimension Door = 4th level spell, minimum CL 7 (There are a couple of classes that squeak it sooner if you REALLY needed to make it cheaper, but I'd suggest making him quest to find these individuals)

Unlimited Use Item = 2,000 gold price multiplier

4*7= 28 * 2,000 =56,000 (wow I just noticed you had that price listed up there lol)

Now, the Horizon Walker can only use it once every d4 rounds, I'd call that a pretty hefty price mitigator.

Lets say between 28,000 and 36,000, feel free to make a decision or tweak either way GM.

Remember this item does take up a slot, otherwise the price doubles. (Or increases by 50% if it's sharing a slot with another ability.)

Look at the Eberron Campaign setting book and use the Lesser Mark of Passage, which gives you Dimension Door. The Least Mark of Passage is a prerequisite, but also has useful powers. Have your ranger take both of those feats, then let him get some sort of dragonmark rod that lets him use the feats a few extra times a day without having to take levels of a prestige class.

Your price range is what I was thinking. BUT, the cape of mountebank is 10k. This SO much better for only a little more gold. pricing items is tough.

Why don't you go with the full 50K+ pimped out Cape of the Mountebank but the process of overclocking the dweomers also gave it the curse of Intermittent Functioning: Either make it Unreliable, where there's a 1 in 20 chance of it not working when desired, or better, have it be Uncontrolled, where once per day it will fire off at random, teleporting the wearer. Usually this will just be inconvenient, but sometimes it will be dangerous, such as on shipboard, or in the presence of twitchy guards.

Kevin has a nice suggestion there - I like.

Also, on item pricing, the 2000x cost is actually more for "continuous" effects, rather than unlimited charges. The general standard, for something you have to activate, is 1800x for 5 uses per day. That's 50,400 gp.

If your player is very into the 'use-at-will' part of it, I don't think that d4 round between uses is much of a mitigating factor - it's not that often that you'd need Dimension Door more often than that, but it might be enough to keep the price about the same as 5/day.

You're the DM, figure out just what you want to let him get away with, and price accordingly. The more it costs, the more he'll value it.

Im thinking to go with the intelligent item pricing. It shouldnt be a low level item anyway. He'll have to earn it.

Also, I really like the 'slightly mafunctioning' stuff! I hadnt read up on that yet. Sounds like lots of fun for the DM. Like teleporting him into a room with no exits or windows hehehe.
