While we wait for your recovery, should we go ahead and tweak our material?

I know I've spotted ways to improve mine.

I originally didn't find the linnorms in the Bestiary when I started, since I was looking under 'Dragon', so assumed they'd been put back for a later product. I now find them in their own entry, and that the description in the Campaign Setting differs from the Bestiary, by describing them with vestigial wings, which they've since lost.
So scratch any mention of wing attacks.

The version of your article that you sent in should have been your final one...though you might get a chance to update it before it goes out to the editor. (Not likely though, as we're cutting it close to the wire for the release date.)

No tweaking or we will never finish!!! We still have lots of editing/artsy/layout/privatepartscratching/marketing to do!

True, I was just thinking we could reduce delays from the editors being sick, if we amend things we've already spotted.
No sense waiting to be told things we already know, right?

In my case, remove any reference to fly speed, or wing attack, and chop reference to flight in the Tactics section.
Add the word 'mithral' to the armor (and reduce armor check penalty to -1).
That frees up some word count to add to the PC hook, and I'll see if I can rebalance the wordcount between backstory and current info.

No, dude, he's a praying mantis. Wait...

... Does that mean Daigle is really Jack Half-A-Prayer?

I'd definitely be interested, although there's a sad lot of "depends" connected to it, ainly technical issues such as poor scanner etc. However that can be dealt with.

So, well, if you're missing more people, do let me know.

I shot you a quick e-mail ...

Thanks!

Charles Evans 25,

In the spirit of Snorter's 'last minute corrections', if whomever is editing Lady of Winter (if it's considered for inclusion) decides to run with just the story section and skip the introduction, then:

Charles Evans 25 wrote:
...This was a time, my daughter, when if the Emperor of Taldor wished to review his troops, the first soldier tramped past at the rising of the sun, and the very last was marching still, when the moon was scaling the heavens...

probably needs to lose the 'my daughter', as it will lack context.

Oh, Charles, you're champing at the bit, as are we all.
Have a sugar lump.

For the record, I sort of agree that there should be a limit on submitting amendments, so as not to drive the editors crazy.
Though I see a distinction between mechanical corrections, which have to be made, or the entry is objectively 'wrong', and descriptive prose, which is totally subjective, so can never be deemed right or wrong.

It's the latter that can get out of hand; many creatives are their own worst critic, and would be second-guessing themselves right up to the article going to press.

Oh hell yes. And, in my case, several years after going to press. *Every* time I read something I've written in the past, I cringe and discover new errors or things that could have been worded better. Doesn't matter if I've read that particular item a dozen times in the past, it's like new typos creep in just to vex me...

I thought that level of anxiety and self-criticism only happened to artists...

Are you saying that wordsmiths aren't artists? ;)

Seriously though, I was told by an editor far wiser than I that more often than not, it's best to fire and forget. There's no point in hammering yourself with things after they've seen print.

Yup. The rule is 'it's never done, but eventually, it's done enough.'

Darn. I didn't realise Wayfinder #2 had actually come out, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered anyone with that last suggested adjustment. Linkie to the Wayfinder #2 download, please???

Well, I never did get an answer to that original query from oh, so many years ago, that made any sense. Mostly, it was 'because writers have always been paid by the word', but that doesn't explain why that state of affairs ever became the norm.

Why are submissions (to any publication, not just this one) rated on number of words? Why not characters? Or number of lines?
Surely, it's the space taken up on the page that's the sticking point?

Otherwise, I'll start channeling Clark Ashton Smith, and those 1500 words will end up the size of a thesaurus. LOL

IIRC, it has more to do with an estimation of the space a publisher has that they need to fill ... makes more sense to refer to that by word rather than columns (dimensions of which could vary depending on the publication or even page) or characters (which also leads to a wide variation depending on the letter ... the letter 'i' takes much less space than 'm', for example). A word count would average out the character count issue somewhat.

Of course, I could just be full of it and making it up as I go along. ;)
