Heres the OOC for the rescued game.

Welcome everyone and I'm hoping this will go well. We might even be able to absorb a couple more players from the old crews but we'll see how it goes for now.

For those who don't know me..I'm James I'm 48 and I've been playing and DMing D&D since 1974..I've seen all the changes...even tried 4E(and found it lacking). A a player I prefer Paladins clerics and (in 3.5) spontaneous casters

I'm a narrativist style DM who prefers to intervene minimally in character interaction but will ocassionally give you a nudge in the right direction whether it be through character insight or NPC advice.

In addition i will always listen to reasoned argument for rules outside the core books...but if I say no after that I mean no.

Well no wonder I got along with you so well with such a fantastically perfect name as that my friend! =D And to top it off you're only ten years early from being born in the Best year! ;-) lol

Once again, thank you for picking up the GM mantle. I'm very much looking forward to exploring the world of Vessaria with you. To Good Gaming! Cheers! =)

Seconded! Thanks for picking up the mantle! I've been stuck DMing everywhere i've gone and this is the first time I get to play, unless you count the two Society Games I got in on at Gen Con UK.

Bill Lumberg,

Thirded (is that a word?) on salvaging this thread. I was beginning to worry that there was no future in PbP games.

I'm a 38 year old who has been playing since 1980 or '81 with the first edition. 3.5 seems best to me, what I saw of 4E was not appealing. I post from the US Eastern time zone which is Greenwich Mean Time -5.

Welard, do you need any information on the binder class? If so, I can e-mail you a file with details on the vestiges. Unfortunately, I cannot find the file on binders so I might make another from scratch.

Khaladon,

Ah! A man after my own year! ;-) You know, it's also great to learn that I'm not the only 'mature'(ish) player on here. Not that I have anything at all against the younger players on here at all, 'tis a great equalizer PbP's, but, you know, it's sometimes fun to interact with those who still remember camera's that had Film in them or a reference to Green Acres or The Fonze or something ;-)

I can remember the episode when Fonzie created the internet out of the radio from a 1957 Chevy and Ralph Malph's central nervous system. "Boy, that was a sticky situation"

As you can see, I am not mature.

We should have a name for out adventuring group. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A group name eh? Well i'm at a loss on that one, maybe we wait to see how the adventure pans out? Just saying all I can think of is Heroe's of Sandpoint...since that's about what we've done after all.

Or we could be Goblin Deathmasters! Goblin Slayers! GSU (Goblin Slayers United)!

more loot! haha wow with all this new found wealth, someone's going to have to explain it's value to Ali soon. Uh-oh! Just had a thought! What's gonna happen when she grasps the concept of Shopping! lol
So does someone wanna divy up the loot and hold onto Ali's share for now? Also, Wellard, is there anyone in town who'd be able to identify the items? If not, maybe we could just ask the guy who used to own 'em?

If everyone is still staying at Inikia's house she could store it there. Of course, there is the risk that thieves might target the place when everyone is away. [Gotta build a secret room!]

Wellard: Do we still get a 20% discount on goods bought in Sandpoint? I am thinking of getting a chain shirt for Inkai.

Khaladon,

Orrrr, someone could just sit her down and explain it to her (hint hint) and she could hold onto it herself =D

OK..heres what you are getting as Fringe benefits

20% reduction in all goods and services purchased in Sandpoint(and yes that does include the Pixies Kitten)

Free board and meals at the Rusty Dragon

I'll throw in free identifies courtesy of the local Mage.

And now the big question...do you guys want to upgrade to Pathfinder Beta..it wont mean a big shift and I'm not sure how it would affect Inakai's powers but I think with just three or four of you the power boost would be useful.(One thing about it is that you can identify a Magic items powers using just Detect Magic and Appraise)

Identify? Really, just like that? I dinnae know tat? Cool

'Pixies Kitten'?? :O I'm kinda curious to see what Ali's reaction to That place would be! lol

Sooooo, what's he say they Are then?? Hmmmm? =D

And Yes, for me, Def make the switch. I haven't fully learned it all yet but it just seems to make more sense to me. As long as it still works for Inikai's character, my vote's Ya, let's switch.

(Some cool Barbarian stuff too if Muchorick's taking any levels of that?)

Bill Lumberg,

I don't know what effect it will have on Inikai. I lost the flashdrive that I stored the Pathfinder rules on but I think that I can download another copy onto a different drive.

On the whole, I was not that enthusiastic about many of the changes but, again, I don't think it will make much of a difference. Will we be combining skills like perception for spot + search and stealth for hide + move silently? What other changes apply that are not specific to character class?

Khaladon,

Lassiviren Final avatar

Not only are several skills combined but the system is different. Characters generally get less skill points per level but for every skill that is a Class Skill if they have at least one skill point in it they get a +3 bonus to it. Also they can not have more Ranks than HD.

-Each race has two favoured classes, every level the character chooses one of these classes they either get +1 hp or skill point.(perhaps Wellard might rule on this for classes not yet covered by pathfinder?)

-Some race abilities are different

-Quite a few class abilities are different (so far only core classes are covered)

-Zero level spells are called Cantrips and whichever ones the character knows they can cast at will

-HP is slightly different. Wellard, are we Rolling for new HP each level or how?

-Some spells are slightly different

The pdf is tailored to you specifically so you should be able to download another no problem.

I realize the factotum is a very unique class, perhaps you and Wellard can come up with something agreeable? Maybe even submit it? Or maybe someone already has, a search of the boards might not be a bad idea.

Overall though I do feel it's an improvement on 3.5, the term 3.75 is accurate I think. And as we are a small unique party, the fact it's slightly powered up will help. I made up 2nd level Ali for Pathfinder but I can remod her if the vote goes the other way.

Bill Lumberg,

I just downloaded another copy. Thanks, Paizo, for being understanding about multiple downloads.

The only issues I can see are minor. Pathfinder PCs cannot have skills points in excess of their levels. Binders often need X number of ranks in a given skill to bind certain vestiges. I can't find my file on binders so I am not sure whether some skills are class skills or not. These are minor issues that can probably be adjudicated easily, though.

Wellard: Would we increase an ability score by 2 considering that the adventures seem to be based on the Pathfinder rules? Or were the adventures written before the new rules were released? Or should we just not worry about it.

EDIT:
I can see the binder falling behind the other classes until about 8th level or so. At that point he will be able to bind two vestiges at a time so it should work out.

We might have to recalculate the skills for each PC but that is not a great task.

The channel energy ability of clerics does not appeal to me but that is purely a matter of personal taste. Fighters will be much more powerful in 3.75. The armor training seems like overkill. Rage points fall into the same basket. Since I don't plan to play a barbarian any time soon it is moot. As long as the game goes on I will be grateful for it.

ok I checked that out Khal and it looks good

Bill I'm not sure what the binders class skills are but remember you get 3 points bonus on those and they count as ranks for the purposes of determining qualifications

The human characters should increase a stat by 2..add a martial weapon proficiency and give themselves either one skill point or one hit point per level for favoured class.

Also you get Racial hit points Ali gets 4 ,Muchorak and Inakai get 6 each

Khaladon,

Lassiviren Final avatar

Gotcha. Oh and sorry Wellard but were we rolling for 2nd level hp's or min-mix etc.?

Taldor Wellard (Pathfinder Companion Subscriber),

oh sorry guys..you get 75% of your dice...so Ali will get 6+con...Murchorak gets 7+con..he'll get 8 next level then 7 and so on..I'm not sure what dice the binder uses

I am a bit confused. Binders have d8 so Inikai gets 6 hp per level after first, that much I understand. Are racial HP in addition to this?

I will change over Inikai's skill points and change an attribute.

Bill Lumberg,

Nevermind, I see that racial HP are added at 1st level and favored class adds 1 HP per level as well.

I changed Inikai's HP, skills and updated his equipement a bit. I think everything worked out. Binders get 4 skill points per level +1 for Intelligence +1 for being human +1 for favored class. So I calculated 14 points for second level.

Please check and let me know if everything is all right with him. I also added a section on binder class abilities. Let me know if it makes sense.

Bookmarked this thread and the play thread for this one, so I'll be checking in periodically until everyone's characters are converted and the newbies (like moi) are ready to be introduced.

Marak's hook into the region is that he's obsessed with studying Thassilonian ruins, and runes, as he's got some appearing mysteriously on his body, and is dreaming of ancient monoliths. Sandpoint seemed like a safe-ish place to start and the 'Old Light' ruins look like an obvious first starting place for a city-boy going into the wildlands of Varisia to muck about exploring ancient ruins.

Just making sure, but no PCs currently in the game actually grew up in Sandpoint, right?

And would it make sense for an eighteen year-old to have known of Nualia as a child(though she probably didn't know her)? And exactly how long ago did the Chopper murders take place? I'm not too sure I have the timeline right.

The Chopper murders took place five years ago.

Taldor Wellard (Pathfinder Companion Subscriber),

X 4 Ghost-Dwarf avatar

Valkyrie..5 years ago you would have been 13...that makes you about 4 or 5 years younger than Nualia so yes you would have known her. She was incredibly beautiful and many of the girls in town were jealous off that (I'll leave it up to you as to whether you were one of them). Also if you have the map of Sandpoint it would be handy to know where your family lives and what they do for a living.

Iniaki it would be useful to know where your house is too.

Spoiler:
There were some rumors at the time of the fire that Nualia was pregnant but that might just have been the other girls being b*tchy

Short time line to put everything in perspective

five years ago Chopper murders 25 people
Chopper is Killed
Three weeks later..Lady Kaijutsu dies in a tragic accident(or was it?)
One week after that...the Temple of Desna burns to the ground Father Tobyn and Nualia (supposedly) are killed

I don't visit this thread as much as I should and had a chance to do some catch up on it today...Wellard am I understanding we have switched over to Pathfinder Beta??

If so I need to make some changes...

Bill Lumberg,

What do we know about the "accident" that killed Lady Kaijitsu? I figure that Inikai was still mourning for his father when she died so he would not be as knowledgable as others on it.

As for Inikai's house I am at a loss. I don't have the guide to Sandpoint so I don't know as much as I should. Would you suggest and area or does it make no difference where it is? I can pick from the map in the player's guide to Runelords if you prefer that. Since Inikai's father was a priest of Nethys he might have lived somewhere near Church Street or near any library the town has.

Also, Inikai picked up Tsuto's longbow. Since Muchorak already has a bow I figured it would be okay. When we went to 3.75 I saw that humans get a free individual weapon proficiency. Since his mother was Shoanti I thought that Inikai might have some previous experience with bows.

Taldor Wellard (Pathfinder Companion Subscriber),

X 4 Ghost-Dwarf avatar

Azoun..yes we have swapped up to '3.75' aka Pathfinder Beta

Set and Valkyrie..I have foreshadowed your characters in the game thread.

Inakai..it was the runelords players guide I was referring to..the map in there...There are two possibilities I think..one the grey roofed house directly across the square from the temple or you could live in the more closely packed houses near this place.

27. Turandarok Academy
As families thronged to Sandpoint, the town founders quickly
came to realize that they needed somewhere to handle the education
of children, a place to house unfortunate orphans, and somewhere
to busy older children to keep them from becoming delinquents.
The answer was the Turandarok Academy. Part school, part orphanage, retired adventurer Ilsoari Gandethus(LN male human wizard 4/rogue 2)
volunteered to be the academy’sheadmaster if he could have the
basement of the two-story building to himself. The town agreed, and today, the rooms below the Academy are almost a museum of the strange
things and trophies Ilsoari has collected over his years. He keeps these chambers locked, but the children who attend classes on the ground fl oor and the orphans who live on the upper floor have countlessstories about what’s down there, ranging from a goblin farm to a nest of phantom spiders to the Sandpoint Devil itself.
Although the contents are much less sinister(Ilsoari is all too happy to show off his collection of exotic weapons, strange maps, and monster trophies to anyone who asks nicely), the old wizard does nothing to dissuade the children’s tales.

Ilsoari is also the mage doing the identifies on any magic you bring in.Inakai would probably know him quite well..he's a good source of information

I will go with a house near Turandok academy. Initially, I envisioned Inikai living with a house-servant of his father's until the servant died in the last year or so.

I like the idea of Inikai knowing Ilsoari. Since Inikai's father was a priest of the god of magic he would likely have reason to speak with a wizard like Ilsoari. This also gives Inikai a place to have continued his education after his father died.

Wellard I just updated Muchorak to Beta, please look him over for any mistakes I might of made, also I did his HP at 20, I believe you said 75% for HP, so I figured 7+2(Con)+1(FC) gave me 10 a level, unless at first we got max than he would have 23.

Let me know!

Muchorak gets max at first plus 6 bonus hit points for his race..giving him a total of 29..you get 7 points on each even level and 8 on each odd one. Don't worry I'll keep you right.

I took the extra skill point for favored class for both levels too.

Valkyrie Paine wrote:

The 'dream from the ancestor' thing sounds particularly 'in-character' for a Sorcerer with a special heritage. She might find some trinket the ancestor left behind as a token of affection for the other parent, by which the mortal parent could call them up. It's been lying about the house, perhaps used as a light-source (an amulet of Continual Flame, for someone with a Celestial Heritage, works neatly), and only the 'gifted' descendent touched by the 'old blood' can use it to call up an image of the ancestor, who points her towards some hidden treasure or other relic left behind. The character then gets to start with a Continual Flame item (100+ gp value, more if the amulet is gold and / or bejeweled), and other items that could be either left behind in a cache, bequeathed to them in a dream visitation (waking up with them in the bed with her, items from an Aasimar hero that fell nearby and who was also a relative, or at least also mentored by the ancestor) or simply coinage that can then be traded for the items desired.

This whole thing just reinforces how badly I have to flesh out a real backstory for my dude. He's so bare-bones right now...

Ahh, too hard to choose now! ;)

I'm actually thinking of combining them if I can; being led by a cryptic dream to find a chest left behind in the attic filled with money or GM's Discretion(or did you want me to choose?). And the trick to opening it is known only to her mother, and she won't do it until she thinks her daughter is ready for it? Is that okay, Wellard? I'm okay with waiting to "cash" in on that until a later time too, so that it doesn't delay anything in the game for anyone.

I love the idea of a letter from an ancestor in the chest addressed to the "Black Witch" too, just because that's all it would take to make her throw herself into that role wholeheartedly.

Thanks guys!

Which ever way Kali want's it is ok by me..I won't railroad you into any particular course of action.

I'll go with that then, if it's alright. I'd like to put that dream off until after she's actually proven herself in a trial by fire though.

If that letter and any gemstones(dark blues and purples?) are in the mix, she's so hitting the local tailor up with some curious orders. ;)
