what is the cheapest place to buy dice?

I would have figured that this forum would be very pro-Gamescience or pro-Chessex. I have both and the Gamescience dice are quite the thing. I think I got a full set of unpainted dice (3d4, 4d6, 3d8, 2d10, 1d12, 1d20) for about $25 ... dunno if you think that is expensive or not, but they will last for many years.

If I'm DMing, I only use GameScience dice, which seem to be pretty cheap everywhere. But my favorite dice are from Q-Workshop and the cheapest place to buy their dice seems to be on ebay.

I prefer Q-Workshop myself, but even their 'cheap' dice are 2-3 dollars more than what you can find from Chessex.

I decided to go poking around, looking for inexpensive dice (I am teaching a group of 28 children Pathfinder, 4th and 5th graders) to give as a Christmas gift, and I found this site Dice! :)

Thanks much for that; I've been needing to refill my 'community' dice pot for the folks who forget to bring dice to my games. Definitely cheaper than a Pound-o'-Dice.

Seriously - I bought sets of GS dice for my D&D groups and everyone loves them. Now we actually see the guy who could never seem to roll a 20 to save his life actually get them on occasion! 'Luck' is bad dice. Game with Science!

If I could buy GameScience dice for three bucks a set I would, but I'm not paying eight or ten bucks for dice, regardless of how nice they might be (and I won't lie, GameScience dice ARE nice).

So don't be hatin' on us folks who like our dice cheap. :p

And when you're buying dice for 28 folks, you want as cheap as you can go with still having quality :) I mean, I love the kids I work with, but popping over to my FLGS and buying that many sets would bankrupt the Christmas budget! Whereas with the pouches I found, these dice and a set of the 144 d6s, I get away with about $2 a child. That's doable!

You can also get dice by the pound

EDIT: If the group I work with was smaller, I definitely would have purchased the Chessex Pound o' Dice, thinking about it more. It's the sheer quantity I need to give each child their own complete set that sent me hunting around for alternatives where I could guarantee what I got without breaking me :)

I could so buy dozens of bags from this place! I went with the velour basics this time, but for my own gaming, I love making up little bags with plastic gems and the Campaign Coins already precounted and prepped for treasure finding ::chuckle:: In my last turn behind the screen, I used these and the cards for all the treasure, and handed 'em over to those finding 'em. What was funny is that the rogue held onto everything! I don't think she wanted to give up fondling the coin ::laughing::

LOL! And you explain to which child why they don't have a complete set to play with for me? Or to my husband why I suddenly have all these extra dice rattling around the house and why we're eating cheese mac for this month? :)

It's funny. yoda8myhead recently joked about my tendency to track down out-of-print game-related books. It's become my habit to look for these things, since I buy so many of those. I don't know <bleep> about buying dice.

I gave him my dice, and bought replacements at my FLGS when I got back. That was just 10 dice. That was in 2001, and I haven't bought any dice since. I still use those same 10 dice.

Then I have my metal dice that EbonFyre gave me for Christmas a few years ago that have become my "Evil DM Dice". These I've managed to keep better track of, thankfully.

I'll still say that GS gives the most random rolls I have ever seen.

Please don't take my "rant" as hatin' on people. It was just a joke. I do dearly love my GS dice though and found a place online to get them for $6.80 a set. of course if I was buying for 28 kids even that would be a ridiculous price to pay.

Heh, I half-figured you were just joking around; I half was as well. I fully admit that GameScience does make some very nice dice and they seem to roll really well.

The GS dice are by FAR the best dice I have ever owned. You really gotta roll em on your palm before you let em fly, though -- they don't really 'roll' as much as 'plop' once they leave your hand. It's a strange sensation at first, and takes a little getting used to, because you get a lot of non-rolls at first.

That was in 2001, and I haven't bought any dice since. I still use those same 10 dice.

Really, it wasn't because of this thread. I've been meaning to get some, because I was tired of getting paranoid, whenever I played D&D with my kids, that they would lose my dice.

And now I return to this thread and realize that I should have gotten GameScience dice instead. Dang!

Good thing you're not playing Champions -- 144d6 is only enough for 5 or 6 players. ;-)

I think my fave two dice, though, are a giant pair of foam d6s that I used last year with my group playing TOON. Soft enough that when the kids got a little crazy it would bounce off others with no damage, and big enough that I could read them from across the room :) TOON with 14 folks running a race and cheating left and right ("I use my gadget as a bazooka and shoot Mr. Stickman!") was awesome ways to spend an afternoon :)

Black Diamond Games in Walnut Creek has a great idea. (In contention for the title of MY favorite local game store)

Dice from a bin, $.50 per die or get a SCOOP (we're talking feed store scoop here people) for $20. I can't imagine scooping out LESS than a full pound of dice.

Which, were I short on dice, I'd totally do.

I think my fave two dice, though, are a giant pair of foam d6s that I used last year with my group playing TOON.
