Name: Bartholomew Daytiger
Race: Human
Class: Paladin 12
Adventure: Descent into Midnight
Location: Shrine of Bound Earth
Catalyst: Denrelwe Azrinae, illusioned to look like Haitan Bhaq, was questioned into a corner by the perceptive paladin thanks to a combination of:
- an illusionist with no ranks in bluff and a 10 charisma using an illusion on herself and then lying instead of using a major image
- the same illusionist not using a nondetection spell and therefore pinging as chaotic evil
...
So, Denrelwe Azrinae disintegrated him. Went from where he was at to -3, and was turned to dust.

Immediately after freeing her, Haitan Bhaq used her wish to recorporate Bart's body and gear, and then the Ghaele with them used her power to raise him from the dead...

Name: Bartholomew Daytiger
Race: Human
Class: Paladin 12
Adventure: Descent into Midnight
Location: The Fetid Palace
Catalyst: The Mouldering Emperor breathed on Daytiger. One failed save later and he was at -13, one below his con. A quick Breath of Life saved the day and he was back in no time, but it was close. The best part was that I gave the cleric a hint to cast Heal on him because it seemed something big was coming, but she didn't take the hint and he ended up close to dying twice in a two-hour span...

Unlucky!

Yet more deaths in Children of the Void. I swear, this one has been a meat-grinder for my group(s).

Name: Daisy
Race: Female Elf
Class: Priest of Celestra 5 (from Tome of Secrets).
Adventure: Part 4: Zincher's Camp.
Location: Zincher's Camp.
Catalyst: While she died during a Zombie raid, doing what she could to defend the camp, that wasn't what got her. What nailed her was...

Spoiler:
Yaris Neraken's wraith, which followed them back to camp after they explored the East Tower earlier that day. Yaris proved an evil bastard, managing to turn no less than five(!) of Cregg's men into minion Wraiths before racing back out of reach over the edge of the cliff, then having them lie in wait until the Void Zombies came along before slipping back into camp to overwhelm her. While Yaris and the majority of his minions were destroyed, Daisy transformed into a wraith and gave the PC in whose arms she died a kiss before slipping off to haunt the island...

Name: Captain Ingwe
Race: Male Human
Class: Warlord 2(Tome of Secrets)/Fighter 1
Adventure: Teeth of Arashka.
Location: The Brig
Catalyst: Having been captured earlier that day when Captain Grudge scuttled his ship, he was barely alive when one of the other PCs failed to

Spoiler:
disarm the trap Grudge had left on the cell door.
He was reincarnated as a Gnome by the same wandering Witch that has been following that branch of the party around the next morning.

Name: Rhino
Race: Horse
Class: Divine Bond Horse 15
Adventure: Descent into Midnight
Location: The Blood Basilica in the Grand Temple of Abraxas
Catalyst: Not above petty villainy, Allevrah used Destruction on Bartholomew Daytiger's trusty steed when she realized the party cleric had doubled up on most of the same spells Allevrah had pre-buffed herself with.

Bartholomew Daytiger, too pretty to ever wear a helmet, picked up Rhino's namesake dragon-skull helmet (Razorhorn's skull from Armageddon Echo) and put it on the next round as a tribute to his fallen friend.

After the campaign ended, he was true ressurected as part of the epilogue.

First blood:

Name: Callis
Race: Forlorn Elf (male)
Class: Fighter 1/ Wizard 2
Adventure: Shadow in the Sky
Location: The Octohedron
Catalyst: The party invaded the Golden Goblin.

Spoiler:
The PCs had dealt with the thugs and rogues upstairs and descended into the lower levels. They engaged Pigsaw and Bojask in the arena. Callis took a critical hit from Bojask's battle axe, which split his skull in twain.

My first Second Darkness kill:

Name: Emmah
Race: Human
Class: Wizard 4
Adventure: Children of the Void
Location: The Witchlight
Catalyst: Knocked out in the course of the tower's fall and battered to death. Then drowned to be sure.

Yet another death in Second Darkness:

Name: Zinfandel
Race: Half-elf
Class: Paladin
Adventure: Endless Night
Location: Alicavniss' sanctum

Catalyst: They decided to attack the First Daughter of House Vonnarc and the High Arcanist of Zirnacaynin. Zinfandel got thumped hard by a summoned Nalfeshnee.

Race: Human
Class: Fighter 10 / Rogue 2

Location: Mirianath

Spoiler:
the banshee
and fell to her song.

Our Bard has prepared a fitting requiem

I doubt the party will allow me to throw him a proper funeral feast either. Poor man is doomed to rise as a zombie if we don't eat his flesh!

A disembodied voice rise from the rich forest black soil, "Hey, I heard that!"

See? Rising from the grave to snark already. Next, it's the running and screaming.

#2:

Name: Morvaius Jeggare
Race: Human
Class: Fighter 6
Adventure: Armageddon Echo
Location: Library

Catalyst: During a fight with the drow in the book stacks, the captain cast a hold person on him. He failed his saving throw...for four consecutive rounds. She figured she'd better stave his head in before he got back in the fight, so she took the AoO and performed a coup de grace.

Puttin' the fear of the dark elves back into my players, one dead character at a time...

Name: Milodams Animal Companion
Race: Velicoraptor
Class: Level 2 Animal Companion
Adventure: Shadow in the Sky
Location: The Flat on Ratstreet

Catalyst: Our Paladin was pounding on the front door argueing with Limas when the rogue and Paladin went around and opened the back door. Milodam sent his Companion in first and to his surprise there was a Dire Ape chained up in the back of the shop who got two full attacks on him before he had a chance to act.
That was one dead Dinosaur Animal Companions dont really count but it was fun

Name of PC: Merisiel "Mule" Galanodel (grey elf), agent of the Winter Council
Class/Level: Cleric 13
Adventure: Descent Into Midnight
Catalyst: Ropers on the Weeping Cliffs
Story: The cleric underestimated the range of the touch attacks of the ropers, and provoked them.

Name: Mebbitinkle
Race: Gnome
Class: Sorcerer 3
Adventure: Shadow in the Sky
Location: Depora's Lair

Catalyst: Impulsive even by gnomish standards, after seeing her companions all vomiting on their shoes due to a Stinking Cloud, Mebbi decided to run through the cloud. She very luckily avoided the cloud's effects, but ended up realizing that she had cornered herself with a very unfriendly drow on one side a small army of self-summoning dretches between her and any help she might have. Needless to say, Depora made short work of the little sorceress while her companions were busy cutting their way through the lesser demons.

(Pathfinder Charter Superscriber)

Name of PC: Elidlara "Aubrey" Seldanica (grey elf), agent of the Winter Council
Class/Level: Evoker 13/Archmage 1
Adventure: Descent Into Midnight
Catalyst: Allevrah and her minions
Story: In the chamber with the Master Glyph, Aubrey exposed herself to too many dangers which accumulated and killed her.

Andoran (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Companion, GameMastery Maps Subscriber)

Just killed two PCs the other night, and had killed another a couple of sessions earlier.

All three were in Armageddon Echo (and all in the echo itself.) We're playing using the PF rules, so the NPCs have been converted, and wherever possible I use the PF versions of creatures. Bestiary 2 has been especially handy for that. They're also significantly behind the power curve (5th level at the end of this book,) but there are 6 players, and so far, it has not been an issue.

I'm not normally a killer GM, I swear:

The human monk (can't recall his name at the moment) died fighting the Babaus in the observatory. He was trying to protect the paladin who had been knocked unconscious. She survived, and the monk died somewhat heroically. After the remaining party members escaped, they decided to rest, then attempt to enter the building a different way.

In the fight with Nolveniss, I ran it exactly according to the tactics listed in the book. He didn't have time to get all of his buff spells ready (which is ultimately what allowed the party to defeat him,) but he had a couple, and he was flying when they came in. He was third in initiative, and in the first round he went invisible and moved. Some of the players moved into the room, at least one citing potential fireballs as the reason, but a group of 4 stayed within 40' of each other. Naturally of course, that's where the empowered fireball went. The human wizard's player rolled a 1 on his reflex, and had very low hitpoints anyway, so even half of the 55 HP damage might have killed him. The gnome beguiler (the only non-PF class) also failed his save, and died.

The funny thing is that both of those characters were going to be replaced at the end of the book. Both players had decided to swap to alternate characters - one was already with the party, so the player was able to keep playing through the session. The other one was back in Riddleport. The monk's player had also wanted to replace his character, but he had asked about killing the character, where the other two wanted theirs to retire. Either way, the party makeup going into Endless Night is exactly what it would have been if all three had survived. :)

Jenry Heckle was a 7th level Alchemist.

He was a stalwart companion and a bold compatriot. He would often stride purposfully into battle situations dispatching foes with a quick toss of one of his explosive concoctions. While fighting a battle against the drow, Jenry and his companions had travelled to a shadow realm. It was in this realm that Jenry found his end.

On the eve of their first night in the shadow realm the adventurers had sought refuge in an inn. Villainous demons rose up in the night and began to acost one of Jenry's companions. Fearing the loss of any member of the team, Jenry ran to the aid of his friend and dove straight into battle with the nefarious assailants. Jenry was identified as a threat at this point and the foes surrounded him and pummelled him into the afterlife.

Luckily the act did not rupture the countless vials on his person as their distruction would likely have lead to the destruction of the shadow realm and the rest of the party.

Jax Garret was a 7th level Arcane Trickster of the roguish wizarding sort.

Met his untimely end shortly after singlehandedly dispatching a Green Dragon by his cunning, daring and well placed use of arcane magics. Despite his courage and intellect, it had left him impressionable to a horrific and uncaring Phantasmal Killer... the demise of many a poor, impoverished and misjudged rogues like himself.

His one lasting legacy was to prove that rogues and tieflings do not betray their own comrades... unlike certain druids.

Name of PC: Mortimer
Class/Level: Wiz3
Adventure: Children of the Void
Catalyst: Lowly wizard hit points

Story: Standing at the top of the tower by himself, Mortimer took 4d6 when the tower fell over in Witchlight and went to -4. He took another 3d6 on the way down as no other PC managed to get to him. The final 2d6 when the tower crashed into the sea was just gratuitous DM bastardness. Reminding the player that he had a wand of levitate that he could have used - really, really bastardly.

Kardrogas as you statted him up is murderous, especially at the end of the gauntlet of encounters in the Academy. I had to take the vicious and shock enhancements of his sword to avoid killing my party, who had just set off the delayed fireball trap in the previous room....

Name: Arr'mesh
Race: Lizardfolk
Class: Rogue 7
Adventure: Armageddon Echo
Location: Moving in Celwynvian
Catalyst: Not thinking things through, bad luck

The PCs are headed for the Academy when a random monster rolls up. The dice indicate it's a group of Crypt Things. I draw an old foundation of a building on the battle map and describe the creatures rising up from the rubble. Knowledge: Religion results are high so I explain that Crypt Things guard treasure and have the ability to teleport unwanted people far away from that treasure.

The Crypt Things do well on initiative and rush to the edge of the building's foundation where they battle the PCs for two rounds with claws only. A couple of the creatures fall, so Arr'mesh tumbles in behind one of the remaining ones - and is now the first person to enter "the building".

A Crypt Thing reacts with rage at this and starts a scream - but whatever ability he was activating is stopped by an AoO from Arr'mesh. Not putting 2+2 together, Arr'mesh remains in the building and keeps fighting. On the next round, the Crypt Thing activates his teleport ability and half of the part is randomly teleported through Celwynvian.

Rolling for random monsters at their new locations (30% chance of monster), Arr'mesh finds that he's teleported near a feasting Vrock. Arr'mesh's extremely high AC let's him survive a couple rounds, but in the end he's ripped apart by the demon.

Name: Augustus Bartholomew Claye
Race: Human
Class: Wizard (Transmuter)/ Bloatmage
Adventure: Armageddon Echo
Location: Streets of the Armageddon Echo
Catalyst: Underestimating the cunning of the Drow

The party had been traveling around the Armageddon Echo for some time, drawing attention to themselves. They had spent quite a bit of time waiting before entering the Echo, so I decided to have Kardrogas leave and set a trap for the party later.

As they wandered thru the streets Kardrogas stepped in front of them and began to monologue. This ended with the following conversation:

CLAYE: So, what is it that you want from us?
KARDROGAS: Just to keep you talking.
CLAYE: I assume we're surrounded then?
KARDROGAS: No. Just you.

Knife, plunged into the back, blood spray EVERYWHERE! Dead.

Kardrogas provided Arkaxis with more than the 3 rounds he needed for his Death Attack. Who says drow can't work together?

On the plus side the party did hit 9th level after the fight. Julian, one of the parties Clerics, prayed for a Raise Dead and all was rectified. Claye is just a little bit more wary of longwinded villains now.

Name: Mortimer
Race: Human
Class: Wizard
Adventure: Armageddon Echo
Location: The Laboratory
Catalyst: Lack of stealth, Poor positioning

The party is sneaking up on the laboratory when the party rogue decides to climb the side of the building, fails, and falls to the ground. The noise alerts the drider who turns invisible and climbs up a wall to take a look.

The drider sees the party rogue finally make it onto the roof but sees three PCs, including Mortimer, nicely grouped for a lightning bolt. Zap #1 in the surprise round.

In the first full round of combat, the drider rolls a poor initiative, but once his turn finally comes around the drider finds three PCs still nicely grouped for a lightning bolt. Zap #2 and a failed save kills the wizard.

(Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber)

Name: Valorous
Race: Elf
Class: Ranger
Adventure: Armageddon Echo
Location: The Observatory
Catalyst: Lack of stealth, Poor positioning

The party is approaching the Observatory but Novenliss knows the are coming. He's waiting and watching with Razorhorn watching from atop the tower. The PCs make no attempt to hide as they approach so we go straight to initiative.

Novenliss drops a fireball on them to start things off while Razorhorn starts flying in their direction. Valorous opts to shoot a couple shots with his bow rather than finding cover. Razorhorn arrives, breathes, Val fails his save and goes down in negatives. All the other PCs have gotten inside the building at this point, so Novenliss finishes off the downed elf with his magic missiles. Drow are dicks.

Name: Arr'mesh
Race: Lizardman
Class: Rog11
Adventure: Memory of Darkness
Location: The Rookery
Catalyst: Vrock's are Spotty.

The party has arrived at Thorn's End and are looking for a way to sneak in. They decide the partially ruined south tower would be good. A spell turns the vine covered walls into a ladder and the entire party climbs up.

They spy Arlindil in his room but Arr'mesh decides to sneak up one level higher. He peeks around the corner, but the vrock heard him coming. Not wanting to fight while climbing, Arr'mesh jumps into the room, but 4 vrocks are 4 too many. (Eagle-eyed readers will note that this is the second time Arr'mesh has been killed by a vrock this campaign).

Name: Stig
Race: Shoanti
Class: Ftr10/Brb1
Adventure: Memory of Darkness
Location: The Rookery
Catalyst: Heroism

Stig rushes to Arr'meshs' aid. Four vrocks though are too much for him.

Name: Harvey
Race: Human
Class: Cleric
Adventure: Memory of Darkness
Location: Thorn's End grounds
Catalyst: Low Dex, Faithfulness

Harvey & the rest of the party are still clinging to the side of the tower as all of this is going on. They call out to Arlindil for assistance and he obliges by using his wall of stone to open a spot for the PCs to climb in. Harvey attempts to climb over, rolls a 1, and plummets the 50 feet to the ground below.

While the fall doesn't kill him, it does attract the attention of Morkvard the glabrezu who teleports down. Harvey tries a Sanctuary but the demon pushes past that. Harvey tries to run but is grabbed in a pincher. Morkvard begins slowly squeezing Harvey, demanding that he make the wish to bring down Thorns End defenses. Resolute in his faith, Harvey refuses and the demon squeezes him to death.

Name: Mortimer
Race: Gnome
Class: Wiz11
Adventure: Memory of Darkness
Location: Arlindil's Quarters
Catalyst: Inquisitive, annoying little turd

Meanwhile, Mortimer is in the room with Arlindil. For my campaign, Arlindil is distraught over the death of his daughter by Alleverah and wants nothing to do with anyone. Mortimer has no diplomacy so can't really change that mood. Arlindil orders him out, Mortimer refuses and starts looking through his papers. Arlindil warns again, Mortimer refuses, Arlindil baleful polymorphs him into a toad.

Name: Pennington Hobbes
Race: Hobbit
Class: Paladin
Adventure: Memory of Darkness
Location: Arlindil's Quarters
Catalyst: He's a paladin. Need I say more?

Seeing his friend turned to a toad, Pennington jumps to his defense. An epic mano-y-mano battle ensues with Arlindil, but the druid's healing eventually tips the scale and Pennington is killed.

(The loan surviving party member is Esvatz the elf wizard who promptly left when Arlindil ordered him out. Harvey, Stif, and Pennington all have enough action points to bring themselves back from the dead. Only Arr'mesh is permanently dead.)

(Which brings up an interesting scenario. The Winter Council meeting has been convened. Three players don't have healed up characters, so I'm having them play the members of the Winter Council.)

Hiya.

Why not? ...

System: Dark Dungeons
AP: Shadow in the Sky; side-adventure (see below)
Location: 5 hours walk, north of Riddleport

Situation: Well, the PC's were getting 'antsy' for some, quote from one player "REAL adventure". (...definitly famous last words! LOL! ). Saul had mentioned to them of a vast treasure of silver, hidden under a barrol with a blue lid, inside a ruined windmill, about 5 hours walk just north out of town. Truth was, Saul was trying to get them killed at this time...the PC's didn't fall for it, and instead just paid the 300gp he said the Gold Goblin needed! (such a scam artist that Saul! ;) ). Advance a few weeks. Just after confronting Smeed (and running him out of town), the Tian mystic woman brought up "Hey, there was that rumor about a wyvern guarding a chest full of silver?". PC's headed out that morning.

500' from the top of a wind swept, grassy hill, they spy a ruined windmill. 400' later they are not surprised; they see two clawed wings curl over top of the uppermost aspect of the windmill...then a dragon-like head peering over at them. The two elves slowly start to back away, the mystic just stands there, and the cleric makes a run for the front door! The wyvern attacks; a handful of rounds latter, some seriously nasty bite damage, and three failed Save vs. Poison rolls later...and we have a TPK.

Well, not a *total* TPK. One of the elves didn't die from poison; and in the DD rules there's a chance he doesn't die at 0 or lower HP. He made those checks...so we just assumed he very slowly crawled/dragged himself back into the forest. The player decided that his elf retires with a REALLY nasty bite (probably resulting in a missing limb, and perhaps permanent lung damage). So...close enough to a TPK. :)

Race: Pal12, Wiz12, Wiz12, Drd14
Class: Cleric
Adventure: Memory of Darkness
Location: Thorn's End Council Room
Catalyst: Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt!

Stoneskin and mirror image made it very difficult for the party to hit Hialin. He simply moved about the room using his lightning bolt wand with impunity. In the end, three PCs and 2 NPCs lay dead. Perelir was feebleminded and would have been killed if not for the guards rushing in. Hilain escapes and joins Allevrah.

(So after not killing many players the entire campaign, I kill 8 in two weeks.)

Man, I'm on a killing spree.

Name: Silat
Race: Elf
Class: Rgr13
Adventure: Descent Into Midnight
Location: Bloodforge of Abraxis
Catalyst: Wind Walk Delay

Party wind walks their way to the Bloodforge and they slip through the arrow-slit in the Glyph tower. The Hezrou feasting on the drider spots them and combat ensues.

Silat decides to decloak from wind walk form - spending 5 rounds stationary in the glyph room. The hezrou unloads unholy blights on him while Drexinis calls for reinforcements from the courtyard. By the time the 5 rounds is up, Silat is at 1/4 hit points from the unholy blights and flanked by a pair of driders and the herzrou. He becomes solid and the dirders & hezrou rip him apart.

Name: Esvatz
Race: Elf
Class: Wizard
Adventure: Descent Into Midnight
Location: Bloodforge
Catalyst: Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt! Rapiers!

Esvatz decides to change out of wind walk form in the nice, safe hallway outside the glyph chamber. By the time he changes to solid form, Silat is dead and the rest of the party is in imminent danger.

It's dangerous, but Esvatz throws open the door to the glyph room and rushes in so that his Cone of Cold can catch as many drow soldiers as possible. It's a brave move but it puts the AC12 wizard right in the room with all the bad guys. Drexenis hits him with a chainged lightning bolt and three drow soldiers descend on him with rapiers.

(Now, you're asking, they've faced driders a number of times, they knew all about the lightning bolts, they've already encountered two glyphs with electricity damage, they've scouted in wind walk form and seen the driders - why oh why didn't they have electricity resistance up? I don't know.)

Hiya.

Wow. You're not going to belive this, but...

Two replacement characters (both fighters), both 3rd level, both in plate mail and shield (really, the best armor they can afford). Both with bocoup hp (42 and 38 iirc?). Figured they were tough enough...

...alas, the *same wyvern* killed and ate them both. o_O

(see my post above for those not knowing the previous nigh-TPK from this wyvern).

Suffice it to say, I don't *think* they are going to try and get that wyvern. But now, hell, I think they've given me a nice "reaccuring villain" when they are outside Riddleport. :evil grin:

Hiya.

Wow. You're not going to belive this, but...

Two replacement characters (both fighters), both 3rd level, both in plate mail and shield (really, the best armor they can afford). Both with bocoup hp (42 and 38 iirc?). Figured they were tough enough...

Adventure: Descent Into Midnight
Location: Blood Basilica

The party has cake-walked through the Land of Black Blood and the first part of the Blood Basilica. They throw open the doors to the thrown room with great confidence.

Name: Darian
Class: Brd13
Catalyst: Init

The party doesn't do so well on init and the Priestesses get off some fireballs before Darian can act. Darian goes down, but is not dead. The party healer is also severly wounded and has to buff himself before he can get to Darian. Darian is healed up just as the Dance of Ruin goes off and that kills him.

Name: Veras
Race: Ranger, Demon Hunter PrC
Catalyst: Saves go against him

Veras takes a couple fireballs as well and moves to deal with the Vrocks. He uses stunning ability but three of vrocks make the save. Veras rolls a 1 on the Dance of Ruin and dies.

Name: Stig
Race: Shoanti Barbarian 13
Catalyst: Greedy

The sight of their longtime nemesis is too much for Stig to resist. He charges into the room to try and reach Alleverah. He has to deal with the fighters in the way and the first Dance of Ruin goes off. He ignores that and continues on to Alleverah where the two of them have a massive fight. Allevrah looks on the ropes, but the tide turns when she activates her Heal and Teleportation Boots. About this time, the Vrocks get off their second Dance of Ruin. Stig fails his save 3 times and a priestess finishes him off with a Chaos Hammer.

Name: Pennington Hobbes
Race: Hobbit Paladin14
Catalyst: Wanting to be helpful

Pennington's is not sure it's the best thing to do, but he charges in after Stig to lend his buffing and Chime of Interruption to the fight. The two Dance of Ruins leave him low, but not out. Allevrah though teleports back in about this time and finishes him off with a Destruction.

Name: Devian Carpiné
Race: Elf
Class: Ranger 2/Infernal Sorc 1
Adventure: Shadow in the Sky
Location: Fishing boat under the Cyphergate
Catalyst: Coup de graced by Depora Azrinae

Depora managed to escape from my Shin'Rakorath agents to top of the Cyphergate. Devian and his two fellow agents chased her. She shot two others down (stablized) and jumped to ship below and started to kill sailors. Devian had used their wand of levitate on himself and started to levitate to boat. He had already used all his arrows as was Depora. Epic duel on the fishing boat wasn't long: Devian had only 5 hit points left so two hits and he was down.

After his comrades woke up, they searched for him. His throat was slit and left to fishes, seagulls and other sea creatures. Others are now trying to think ways to raise him.

Race: Half Elf
Class: Bard/Rogue 8/2
Adventure: Memory of Darkness
Location: Council Meeting Room

Catalyst Quilindra Coup de Grace after a hold person
After the Spike was removed s!@+ really hit the fan and she slit his throat after he had spent 2 hero points to survive failed save vs a Prismatic Spray green ray

This combat had allot of close deaths and hero points spend. One player spent a hero point to give him a plus 8 to save from another Coup de Grace from Quilindra, I think every character spent at least one hero point in this combat
