I've been converting my Second Darkness campaign to PFRPG ever since I downloaded the PDF and I have run into a snag:

All of the Drow Priestesses in this adventure path, including the final villianess, make use of old 3.5's Magic Domain ability to use wizard activation items. Many of the priestesses have wands and scrolls of wizard spells as a result to supplement their arsenal, especially the final villianess. The new Magic Domain for Pathfinder gives no such ability, thus I am stuck.

Should I redesign these priestesses, or should I fudge the rules and allow them this ability anyway, perhaps justified by their association with Abraxas? :/

Fudge the rules. Definitely. Why make extra work? And you've got a good cover story there.

Totally fudge. Or hell, just add their favored class point into Use Magic Device always.

(RPG Superstar 2008 Top 16)

I'd just fudge. If you weren't comfortable with that, you could make the ability into some sort of feat, available only to clerics with the Magic Domain.

I think I'd probably just add a level of wizard.

This.

I fudged it and got caught (my player has sharp eyes!). The UMD solution is a good one, if a little annoying to roll in play.

Player wasn't upset, though: he knows I'm not trying very hard to convert to Pathfinder for the NPCs, as it's just too much work.

This is the type of thing that makes me worry about how "transparent" using the PFRPG rules are with 3.5 modules.

Why is this a cause for worry? No translation, no matter how backwards compatible, will ever be perfect. Do whatever you have to do to make it work, but by the gods, don't take it so seriously as to worry over it. Worry about affording a car payment, or making it to work on time despite unexpected traffic, or not having studied enough for the big test, or whether you closed the garage door before leaving for the airport. This is just a little thing.

I'd go with the UMD solution and perhaps giving them an alternate class feature that lets them take 10 on the check in place of something you don't see them using. In the end, as long as you maintain balance, it's your game and you can make any fix you want.

(Pathfinder Charter Superscriber)

What about creating a racial substitution level that lets them do this?
