Running through my RotRL campaign last night, my players finally reached Thistletop, only to end up captured by the goblins.
Spoiler:
They found their way into the thistle maze, no problem. The party bard scouts ahead and sees the birdcrunchers. Quietly, the party moves into position, and the wizard readies a scroll of flaming sphere he found in the Catacombs of wrath. He rolls a 1 on his level check to operate it (the party is level 2) and alerts the goblins, who attack en masse. A few rounds later, Gogmurt the druid arrives with his Fire Pelt and goblin dogs in tow.
The PCs put up a good fight, but end up unconscious and nearly dead. I've had the druid stabilize them, but I'm not sure what he'd do with his new captives.
Being only Level 2 would be rough at Thistletop, the druid would definitely try and set the adventurer's against Nualia. I'd have him toss the PC's in the front door and barricade it shut for a few weeks. This means the PC's would have to leave from one of the lower exits like past the Tentamort. The PC's may end up half dead fighting Bruthazmus, but it seems like a good way to start the game.
Then he will immediately betray the PCs, probably at the bridge. That's what he did in my campaign, and he ended up a recurring villain. Later he ambushed them on the road with a herd of aurochs, using charm, invisibility to animals, and call lightning to great effect (the lightning let him control the direction of the stampeding aurochs, and he was riding one at the center).

Any thoughts or ideas?
You know, the situation you described is exactly what happened in my game, except the wizard managed to properly use the scroll. Totally different outcome.

Hm.
Yeah. I have a feeling a ball of arcane fire rolling among the goblins and goblin dogs might led to a happier end for my PCs.
As it is, the wizard is a half-orc who already has a history of casting spells that enemies save against. (just lucky rolls) Now the party's dwarf constantly taunts him with his lack of magical effectiveness.
My pc's will be attacking thistletop at our next session. I'm curious if level 2 is ok or should they be 3 at this point? 1st time GM with pathfinder rules and never Gn'd in 3.0 or 3.5 so not sure if i messed up calculating xp

Good luck!
Evil Lincoln, this is pretty much the coolest thing I've read on this board to date. I'm impressed.
More on topic, my PCs are about to launch an assault on Thistletop, recruiting some hired help and allied NPCs (Makes perfect sense that Shadowmist could belong to Daverin). The help will serve partly as redshirts, to make the encounters seem deadlier than they are.
... though by the sounds of things, I likely won't be needing them.
