So I'm thinking about running Legacy of Fire and wanted to do it with the new PFRPG. In the new rules a characters favored class gives the character either +1 HP per level or +1 skill rank per level.

My first question is: Does this apply at 1st level as well?

My second question is: If every character gets this what is one to do with the "Finding Halleen" campaign trait from the Legacy of Fire players guide where the PC's first class is their character class and they get +1 HP/level and +1 skill rank per level?

1) Yes - This applies to first level if this is your favored class

2) For the Finding Haleen trait, this was written with the old rules in mind, and it feel like adding this on to the Pathfinder rules would be a bit much. I would play it that with this trait, they get +1HP & +1 skill points, but it would not stack with the favored class benefits in the PF RPG. A trait is suppose to be equal to half a feat, so stacking this with the PF RPG feels like more than half a feat.

.
I've been thinking about this one as well, since we're about to start LoF, and have come up with a few options.
.
Right now I think I'm leaning toward option #2.
.

  • The trait improves the favored class mechanic of PFRPG, grants +1 hp and +1 skill point per level (mechanically the same as the current trait; a little weaker than the previous version since everyone can get +1 to one of these with favored class)
  • The trait improves the favored class mechanic of PFRPG, granting +2 to either hp or skill points per level and +1 to the other (mechanically similar to the current trait; boost is intended to compensate for everyone getting +1 to one of these with favored class)
  • The trait is separate from the favored class mechanic of PFRPG, granting a second favored class (mechanically emulates the half-elf racial ability Multi-Talented; may be mechanically nice, but seems to deviate from the flavor of the trait)

Hmmmm.....

I think that option 1 might be the best for me. It essentially keeps the text of the players guide intact without having to justify any changes to my players.

I would leave it as is. Paizo wrote a lot of their stuff with the PRPG in mind, and the Beta was definitely around at the time of LoF. The fact that it mentions 'over and above what you would normally gain' seems to me as a subtle hint towards the current Favored Class bonus.

Mechanically speaking it does seem a bit much, but I would leave it intact.

Traits are intended to reward players for giving a damn about their character's background. So if letting the bonus hp stack with those granted by Favored Class gets a PC to do that... I've got no problem with it! :-)
