Hi.
I was wondering, since the new races have been improved in a way, how should we consider revising the level adjustement for the ed 3.5 powerfull races?

That question would probably have to be answered for a case by case basis. Some of those races after all, are still rather powerful. Also this is just the core book that's being designed here. It'll be far, far, from the end of the process even when 1.0 comes out.

Yeah, but I thought that it would be an idea to decrease every lvl adjustment by 1. that way the overpowerfull race stay penalised, but in accodance to the newly enhanced races.

Some adjusted races might need to keep that adjustment, though. Especially given that some of their abilities might be improved thanks to 3.Pai alterations. An across-the-board alteration just doesn't jive, but then again there'll probably be a 3.Pai MC Appendix (sorry, couldn't resist) to redesign the monsters under 3.Pai.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. For example, we have a tiefling in our group. The stat adjustments do not warrant a level adjustment. The racial skill bonuses do not warrant a level adjustment. However, the darkness spell like ability and resistances to energy just might.

I've been toying with how to handle level adjustments in my game, but to be honest, if the duskblade or tiefling or spellthief are now suboptimal choices vs Pathfinder's core rules, that's okay. That just encourages more people to use the core rules, right?

That's true, that's why 3/4 of my players took core races; But the last one chose to have an Aasimar. And I was wondering what to do with his lvl adjustment. And how to apply the lvl adjustment with the new character advancement table, with experience counting in million, the way it was in AD&D...

Darkness, as it is currently written, does very little. you can still use non-magical light sourses within its confines, nor does it impede darvision.

The energy resistances though are another matter. At lower levels, that 5 resistance will make an impact. Later on though, that ammount really does become negligable. Especially if you have caster in the party who can grant higher levels of resistance, obtain magic items, or belong to a class that has evasion.

Perhaps, if you allowed the energy resistance to scale with level (5 + 1/2 character level), then it would certainly make for an argument of maintaining the +1 LA.

We've had a couple of strange races in our games that have featured in our Alpha playtests. What we've been doing is this:

1) Look at the race in question and decide if they they at the upper end of the LA or the lower end of the LA.

2) If they're at the upper end, give them a +2 bonus to the single most appropriate ability score if their LA is under 3.

3) If they're at the lower end, then reduce the LA by one.

Races with more than 3 LA need to be looked at individually, because they really are weird in a couple of places, we were looking at natural attacks and spell like abilities. These can be difficult to balance, but one of the above options (or both) should work.

We've had no compatibility issues so far. :o)

Peace,

I generally won't let players take a LA race of greater than +2 (maybe +3 if they pitch a good argument) because they are such glass cannons.

We had a longstanding half-dragon that was very weak until about 8th level, at which point he caught up with the party...

Here's what you do:

1) Reduce the following races from +1 LA to +0:
* hobgoblin, merfolk, blue (psionic goblin), locathah

2) Replace +3 LA (or higher) and LAs with (cohort) with "Not recommended for PCs"; you might as well throw the krenshar in there, too.

That covers everything in the SRD + Psionic SRD.
