I just submitted three new queries (it was a productive evening).

So now I'm up to 7 queries in the black hole. If I can just keep up the pace and write 3 queries a day, I'll pass GGG by the end of the weekend, lol

There must have been a meeting this afternoon because I just got an e-mail from the Paizo crew that my manuscript is good enough for publication next year and that they green-lighted my query for a Forgotten Realms campaign arc! Woo hoo, me!

Yesterday made me want to create a dungeon crawl filled with smurfs for the PCs to brutalize in each and every way.

Could someone refresh my memmory, what are the stats for smurfs, are they like gremlins or something? Blues maybe?

Well I just checked my rejections, and the results are 3-2 months.

My last rejection batch happened between the 8th and 10th of November. Given that I didn't submit anything until February this year I believe I am due in May???

NEW Q: How likely is a horror adventure to be accepted?

Q PART 2: Are horror adventures something that Dungeon saves for its fall releases, or are you willing to publish them at any given time, assuming the quality is above par?

Escape from Meenlock Prison is a spectacular horror adventure in last month's issue, so I'm pretty sure horror isn't confined to fall publications.

From other comments that have been made, I'm pretty sure if you can do a good Cthulhu-style horror adventure, it'd be looked on favorably ;-)

Well, I just sent in 3 more queries. All three are part of a proposed Campaign Arc, although I made sure to note that they each could stand on their own, despite the common NPCs, etc. Just your all around Cthulhu goodness, with healthy dose of material from Lords of Madness.

So now I've got 10 queries in the Black Hole, plus another manuscript from a few meetings ago that is awaiting judgement still. I have to say that even if I don't achieve my goal of being published in Dungeon, I've probably got my next years worth of adventures for my home campaign nicely plotted out. ;-)

You know, by time they get around to their meeting, I will have been deployed to Iraq... and back!

So does the end of Dungeon and Dragon magazines mean that the piles of manuscipts for both mags will just be binned?

Finally, the mysteries of the Black Hole have been penetrated!!

So I guess we're going to see a single adventure path in Pathfinder and occasional stand-alone "old school" modules written by the established authors. While I really enjoy the content from these authors and look forward to Pathfinder, I was really hoping for the chance to publish adventures of my own again. Well, at least the playtesting was fun...

I would guess that GGG is too busy getting Pathfinder together to worry about the slush pile right now... ;-)

Are all of the ideas in our queries and unpublished manuscripts now the property of WotC? Are we proscribed from offering them to other publishers until WotC speaks on them? For example, am I prohibited from offering a new monster from an unpublished but un-rejected DUNGEON manuscript to Pathfinder?

Can WotC farm our queries and manuscripts for fantastic ideas and then pitch the queries and manuscripts, calling the fruit of that harvest its own intellectual property?

Just wanted to bid farewell to this very cool thread :( I'll miss it. It will most likely be replaced by some new and shinier one. With a more focused set up for the new products, I can only assume that the query reading and response routine will be quicker, thus no need for threads like this one. (hoping that's the case, actually)

Jason, it's not that bad :) I've been here (Iraq) for nine months, and Paizo has been very responsive in that time.

I'd have to doublecheck the wording of the SDF, but I doubt it.

We submitted the queries/manuscripts to Paizo, not WotC.

In regards to your first questions? I dunno. Most of the ones I pitched in this last batch of queries were Eberron/FR specific ;-(

Well, I'll hold off on the writing for bit until they put up some submission guidelines on Pathfinder. At least I have the NHL playoffs to occupy me :-)

At this point... I'm not sure what the fate of these queries and manuscripts will be, but I do know that, whatever happens to them and whoever takes over stewardship... the authors are free to retract and resubmit their ideas to whoever they wish. No one's signed any contracts or paid you for your ideas yet, after all.

We'll hopefully get that sorted out soon, though. One thing that I can say for sure, though, is that we'll certainly still be looking for submissions in some manner for Pathfinder and GameMastery... it won't be in the great quantities we did for Dragon and Dungeon. Wizards of the Coast may or may not take up that standard... I'm not sure. I've not heard anything about their plans yet.

Thanks, James. I think many of us aspiring but unpublished feel like we missed the last helicopter out of Saigon. We'll keep our fingers ctrossed for a new forum welcoming new talent.

Best of luck with Pathfinder! May it be flooded with subscriptions, win a breathtaking number of awards, slaughter the competition, and set standards for roleplaying no one could have imagined possible!

And James, please try to make room in Pathfinder for the Mad God's Keys and Escape from Meenlock Prisons, the brilliant little adventures that can stand alone and are the bread and butter of the homebrew campaign. Deep immersion in a unified storyline is fantastic, but AP's leave little room for a DMs own creativity and original storytelling. DUNGEON delighted many of us so well because of the richness of the non-AP adventures that we could fold more easily into our own storylines. Chimes at Midnight, The Devil Box (I'm still laughing about that one), and even The Styes (before it became a juggernaut on its own) . . . please find a place for these!

Ah I wouldn't worry. At the very least I now have 100,000 prewritten queries I can shop around to pretty much anyone. I shopped them to Paizo first because the way as I figure it why shouldn't I aim for the top?

Alas, I have not been invited. I can't make a deadline to save my life apparently. Always have to try and cram one more element in. One more bit that makes it all fall into place. Still I have the next issue of Dungeon (147) to look foward to and the work of many of my fellow Were-Cabbagi, about 80% of Pathfinder's slated authors look to be members of the patch.

And trust me there will always be black holes in the publishing industry.

I completely agree with Ashevale. While the scope and sweep of APs was fabulous and always got my players excited to begin a new game, we've also had a great time running the other adventures. Sometimes we'd just generate characters for an adventure in Dungeon that appealed to everyone but didnt fit into our current campaign.

In any case, I'm really excited for Pathfinder. I know it's going to be great.

Re: the helicopter from Saigon comment. Ashenvale, maybe we'll get really lucky and the last issues of Dragon and Dungeon will each be 5,000 pages long, chock full of the remaining complete manuscripts the editors have.
It's a nice dream, anyway. ;-)

So here's a funny (ironic, not Ha Ha) story.

Over a year ago I submitted an adventure to Dungeon. I received a notice that it was received, and then nothing. I emailed a couple of times, and even posted here, but never heard back. I figured that they decided they didn't want it and forgot it.

So on Tuesday I got a contract in the mail and it's coming out next issue. I told a bunch of my friends, one of whom already knew from the preview in this month's issue. I'm one of those poor suckers who has endless subscription problems. I'm always looked after and have only good things to say about the Customer Service at Paizo, I just have to e-mail them frequently, and usually get my mags a few weeks after everyone else gets them from the store.

Anyways, of course I'm as excited as all get out, and inspired to write a bunch more stuff. I put together a few ideas, and of course, get the same carpet pulled out from under my feet as the rest of you.

Bit of a roller coaster.
