okay, so i've noticed that the iconic palading Abelard has been grossly mauled, beaten, stabbed, fileted with acid breath, folded, spindled and mutilated over the past three years since the iconics have come out. i was hoping to see something different with the iconic gatefold cover for 150, but that seems not to be the case. here we see our beloved paladin getting his butt handed to him by demogorgon.

this is a demon he should be doing great against! he should be OWNING demogorgon! here's an enemy that represents everything that abelard is against, evil, chaos, and a desire to bring down humanity and throw it into a state of savagery!

but what do i get instead? another beaten up abelard picture. come on folks, with the last issue, you would think he would be given a fighting chance, a heroic victorious stance upon the vanquished foe of the hated demon prince..... but no. last issue, you couldn't even do that....

how did this guy survive, being the unluckiest paladin ever. i notice tyralandi scrimm goes unhurt in all of the pictures, yet still maintains her girlish figure... unfair, is what that is...

come on, abelard lovers, sound off. raise objection and have the picture redone, i say! who's with me?!!

He fared pretty well against Kyuss I remember, atleast the picture was paladin friendly ;>

paladin's job is take one for the team so the wizard can be the hero. Its in the job description. Blood, sweat, and tears. Why do you think so few people like running them? It isn't the alignment issue. Its having a big target for the bad guys to hit all day long.

I think it's just a sign that Abelard is the only one actually brave enough to get in Demogorgon's face (or at least do it first.)

And of course, you're missing the next panel, in which Abelard takes the kid gloves off and goes all 'Smite Evil' on Demogorgon's ass.

anyway, i think i'll make abelard my next PC for the pathfinder campaign a freind of mine is going to run. we'll see how long he lasts in that one.

Have to remember that all the paladin abuse in the magazine illustrations started from the Whispering Cairn play test. In it the paladin character who was inspired by the Iconic was devoured rather messily in the first session by the beetle swarm (I believe...by the beetle swarm that is. There is no doubt that he expired horribly). I personally thought it would've been rather cool to have getting nailed by Demogorgon and about to lay holy smack-down. Say he just got nailed by a tentacle but in mid-air loosed his shield, grabbed the tentacle and while still air-borne is about to hack it off.

Nah... the paladin getting slapped aside in the cover is as much about Abelard's untimely death at the start of our Age of Worms campaign as it is this adventure path's rough treatment of paladins in the first place. :)

Demogorgon probably just got tired of hearing the paladin's player say, "I Detect Evil!"

What they couldn't include on the cover was Demmie's quote right before he put one upside the paladin's head: "Oh yeah? Smite THIS, b!tch!"
