Just curious if there were any plans to produce, in particular, non-fantasy themed FlipMats or a Combat Pad. I'd love to see a general modern/SF version of each of these. Horror/Cthulhu versions would also be nifty, IMO.

This is Ryan from Open Mind Games, the manufacturer of the Combat Pad. We do have plans to created different themed versions of the Combat Pad. I appreciate your suggestion and interest!

I think we are working on agreements with minis companies to produce minis. Not sure of the details, though (I don't sit in on EVERY meeting, after all). :)

What about paper minis? there are some great standees out there, maybe one of them could do a big set of paper figs for you.

Just like I would be, had I the option. I am still holding out hope that some mini's will eventually come out via Paizo, whether through commision by someone else or whatever, just so long as we get some Golarion minis!

What about paper minis? there are some great standees out there, maybe one of them could do a big set of paper figs for you.
I think there's a perception among us staffers that paper figs aren't as cool as plastic or metal minis.
I rely on maps more than I do minis (because my players provide the minis (to use, not to keep)). So I use whatever they have that is the closest fit, and nobody seems to care so long as their personal PC is well represented.
My point is.. I wouldn't mind seeing paper minis too! Especially if they were exact!

Well, okay, actual licensing would be way too expensive and would give Lucas too much control, but there are plenty of generic ways to do this.

Fighters? eh, maybe/maybe not
Gunships (smallish, heavily armed starships. Say up to about 9 tiles in size, 36 meters by 22 meters.
Big City streets
Pirate base
Hostile environment base camps
Well, I just got a copy of Galaxy Tiles, and I definately want to repeat my request for Paizo to put out some tiles like the Game Mastery Map Pack. Mind you, the Galaxy Tiles aren't bad, really, they are just... not good. I already have a mega-mat for wet erase markers that I can use for open spaces. I don't need to waste tiles on open spaces, I need tiles for cargo containers, furniture filled rooms, the bridges of starships, all that kind of stuff. Instead, one of the tiles that WotC put out has a huge open area (8" x 10") with two computer consoles and chairs in the middle. That's it, nothing else in there.
Please, Paizo, make some good tiles for us!

I don't disagree, Mike, but there are times when paper minis fit in admirably, particularly for notable NPCs and unusual Monsters.

Now that Mongoose Traveller is taking off, and there is still d20 Traveller and Star Wars and various other SF rpgs I would really like to see Paizo branch out beyond just fantasy accesories.
That doesn't make sense, though. There's only a limited market for SF RPG, and if Traveller and Star Wars are becoming increasingly popular there's no good reason for Paizo to try to compete.

HERE HERE! Paizo has A LOT of good stuff on their plate as is, I see no reason to try to take little bites off of everyone else's, as well. The only reason I would want Paizo to handle it is because of their quality of products, that said, undertaking MORE could jeopardize existing projects.

I think what he is assuming is that Mongoose, WOTC and others won't be supporting their games with maps and item cards and the like, and so Paizo would be scooping a niche market that no one is currently competing for. Except WOTC's lackluster Galaxy Tiles.
I can see the market, but I kind of doubt it's large enough to make it worth the time and expense.

Sorry Mike, but..err...wrong. Very wrong. In the context of map packs and flip mats, WotC has only feeble freebie star wars maps at monthly FLGS Events. Other than that, they pulled the plug on future Galaxy Tiles (no Imperial Outpost for Star Wars Miniature/RPG fans). They stupidly made Galaxy Tiles for RPG only, when they could have used their slightly noticeable colored box linings around terrain (for terrain effects on the miniature game) so everyone could have enjoyed them. Not really a big deal though, but just enough to throw the Mini crowd off. The fact that it is growing but lacking in maps is a real sore spot. These FLGS star wars event maps (given out for free at events) are going for a ransom note over eBay. I would snap up anything SF that Paizo made because I have more minis in star wars than I do in D&D. I have all the SAGA RPG and seriously "Jones-ing" for good sci-fi maps (around Star Wars specifically). Star Wars is missing two things actually. One is maps and the other is a comprehensive Alien/Monster Manual. For the life of me I can't get any good maps for Star Wars.

P.S. Yes, I know. If Galaxy Tiles failed, than why would SF Map Packs succeed? Well, for the above mentioned reason, there are more people that play the miniatures game than the roleplaying game. (Terrain type indicators) I definitely fall into this category for the moment, because there are no decent maps for Star Wars Roleplaying (other than the ones I have from the Mission Books and the starter sets and the freebies. Anyway.
Paizo couldn't make map with terrain indicators consistent with the Star Wars minis game. That would be a violation of WOTCs trade dress.
While making terrain indicators that were similar to the SW CMG would be a no-no, I suspect that making tiles that were consistant would be another matter entirely. Just using blue for green and yellow for orange for example. If these tiles are at all similar to the map packs, they would be intended for stand alone use rather than being part of an existing play map and then the color differences should not be a problem (except for the most anal retentive of gamers).

Yes, there is a somewhat limited market for SF RPG, just like there is a limited market for fantasy RPG, or modern RPG, or superhero RPG, etc. I was not suggesing that Piazo make a new SF RPG.
What I am suggesting is that Paizo could do a great job by expanding their existing line of Map Pack products to include things with a SF theme.
Like perhaps a starship pack:
6 or 8 tiles together make a decent sized small cargo ship.
3 tiles can make a good gunboat.
2 tiles end to end would be great for a customs patrol boat.
1 tile is a great size for a fighter.
Now, I realize that Star Wars has a lot of iconic ships that could not be used due to licensing restrictions. On the other hand, both the T20 and Mongoose versions of the Traveller rules have open gaming license portions.
And there is also all the posible types of buildings available...

I think there is a Star Wars feel, but any Sci Fi map would be better than none. As far as Iconic ships, I think there are plenty of other things that could be created that have nothing to do with ships. Paizo excels at hitting the weak spots of a company. The sci fi "Star Wars" has virtually no maps on the horizon....and we are desperate for some good maps other than the ones we have (scraps).

Wow, a long thread without a real answer. I'm covering all of the bases with this...
I am creating a map building product that consists of tiles, objects, and effects that gamers and GM's can use to build their own maps via VTT or any graphics software. The beginning products will be fantasy-based, but I AM planning a Sci-Fi themed set...possibly done by GenCon. The art will not be a duplicate of any of the maps that I have done for the GameMastery line nor for the Star Wars RPG, but will be different to not compete directly with them. That said, this leaves the sky open for possibilities.
