So anyone buy this yet? What did you think?

I have it in my side cart but will need to wait till next week to buy it.

Well, I am slightly biased, but I think the writing is sheer genius...

Thanks thats pretty much what I was hoping for. The added details and such are big pluses for me. Sound like the type of book I would like.

Ok the review was enough that my will save eventually failed and I bought the book.

Honestly I am impressed, I rate this up with the top equipment books ever sold. My personal fav is Everything and a 10ft Pole, this book comes close very very close to that. The descriptions are well done. The art is decent and gives you a nice idea what stuff looks like.

I have a few nit picks, mostly I would have liked to seen a side bar section on clothes made of different types of material and how that would change the cost, or some more ale, beer examples and the defaults with maybe some getting drunk mods in the descriptions etc. Likely my biggest nit pick is I didn't agree with all the costs. They seem to follow along the default cost prices of the main book, which makes sense but I always felt those costs where out of wack and why 10Ft pole is so well liked by me.

All and all I would rate this in the top 5 books of this type easily, I would say top 3 an maybe 2nd best of all time. I like equipment books(I have a lot of them).

Also i am very much looking forward to what you have in mind with Strategists and Tacticians book you have coming out.

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Roleplaying Game, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

I really got the whole Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue vibe from it. I liked it quite a bit... kind of find myself wishing I'd got the print edition, for the first time in what seems like years of buying mostly PDFs.

Though the artwork for the weapons was a bit of a disappointment. Honestly, to be blunt, it felt like about the level of things I'd doodle in the margins of my character sheet if I was bored at a game. The rest of the art was ok, not great, but what do you want for an equipment book? Great art has never exactly been one of the prerequisites for books of gear and weapons.

All in all though, a good, solid book, well worth the purchase price.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

I am curious about your comment about wanting to see clothing made from different types of material, as most of the clothing items are available in different materials, for varying costs. (I based all the clothing prices on the yardage needed of fabric to make them.) Were you hoping for fabrics beyond those listed?

We were simply running out of room to add more types of beer, but thought 9 various ales, lagers, and stouts was a good assortment. Likewise with individual DC modifiers with each type of alcohol - it doesn't seem like that would take up a lot of room, but added all together for all the beverages, it would have. The sidebar should provide enough of a basis for GMs to make any adjustments they think should apply.

Again, just a matter of curiosity, when you say you don't agree with the costs, do you mean you think they're too high, or too low?

Thanks once more for taking the time to post these wonderful comments on our book! I'm editing Strategists and Tacticians now and I think a lot of people are going to find it very useful.

Ok here is a example of what I meant about the clothes. First yes many of the clothes have several types but not all of them.

Dresses - has Everyday, Fancy and Formal.

Then you guys have such a really nice list of other material just after the tables and descriptions for clothes. Yet as far as I can tell there is no advice on how to adjust the cost for the items already there. (Yes I am pretty sure I can figure it out on my own, but a nice side bar or something doing that, would have been very nice.) Like for example say someone wanted a Calico dress. What I would have liked to see is a little side bar explaining how the other material if used increases the cost of a existing item.

This kinda goes along with the cost comment but also here. I would have liked to have seen for example a slight cost difference in say Linen and Linsey-Woolsey. Just wish you would have used fractions cost more, so instead of both being 2sp for a bolt, maybe one would have been 2sp and the other 25 cp etc.

As for Ale's and the like, yeah what you did was enough. But I love details like that. I would have just have liked to have seen more types and if any of them had bonus or minus to the save.

As for cost mostly I feel the cost in the main 3e DnD book and Pathfinder are just out of wack. I just have always felt a lot of non armor and weapons where always a bit high or you could say some weapons and armor was to low. Like a heavy mace cost 12gp and a short sword 10gp, the sword is a lot harder to make. But that's not on you guys, so that was just me making a passing statement that was more at DnD in general.

So as you can see all my complaints where just that nitpicks which I knew they was when I posted them. Normally I wouldn't even mention such things but you guys just did such a good job I had to nitpick to find things I felt could have been improved on. :)

Yeah that is the other book in the top three I was refering too. I put this, Aurora's and 10ft Pole as the top 3 books of this type. All are very good and very close in how i rate them. Each has strengths and weaknesses over the other two. As far as which one is better? Hard to say, I would likely give a different answer on any given day.

Well, it deserves it, and you all do too. You're also showing real growth and development as designers, improvement from product to product over time.

Cheliax (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

I do agree with you Kvantum that the artwork for the weapons and armor especially was not up to professional standards. But they are decent enough doodles to give you a solid idea what the weapons and armor look like. Which for me was enough.

Also for the record I had to shorten my review from my first try. I went over the word limit. So had to trim it back down, that's why some chapters have more information about them.

What can i say I have liked your previous products of 4 winds I have bought, but with this one I think you guys really set the bar very high for any follow up products and for other companies. The other products I have bought from 4 winds I would rate a 4 star typically, but this one was very very well done. So kudos for a job well done, now just keep this level of product up for your future products. :)

Hmmm...

Well, I too have a lot of "gear" books, Goods and Gear from Kenzer, Paladium's, Aurora's, the 10 foot pole, and others.

I was resisting buying this, especially since Paizo also has a similar book in the works, also likely to have an Aurora vibe to it, but since I don't remember Dark Mistress ever steering me wrong about an RPG product I'll break down and get the print of this.

I will get the PDF too, if I ever see it for 50% of print. So if that is what you have it at now, I will be buying it in a few minutes.

Well, it's 57.78%, I hope that's not a dealbreaker...

Lyingbastard wrote:

I'm afraid it is.

I do have the book in my cart for pre order, and will be paying for everything on or soon after March 01.

Now if you tell me that the PDF price is as high as it is because Paizo charges 40% of the selling price as their cut, then I would likely reconsider the PDF.

Well, it doesn't have to be 40%, the main thing I want to know is if the price is to make it so you get the same profit margin on the PDF sale as you do the print.

What turns me off is PDF sellers who go for a bigger profit on PDF over print. Like the greedy book publishers who are crying about Amazon and Kindle, and "persuading" Amazon to increase the Kindle prices.

Despite what my government keeps telling me, I do not believe greed is good for the USA, and especially my wallet.

Robert Miller 55 wrote:

Paizo does not take 40%. In fact, the Paizo share of our sales is 25%. However, some of our online sales outlets take more than 25%, yet the retail price of the PDF is the same at all outlets - $10.95.

If you purchase the print version through Indie Press Revolution, you get the PDF free. IPR is the only one of our sales outlets that automatically allows us to set up a Print/PDF bundle in that manner, however. If Paizo had a similar system, I would set it up that way here as well.

I didn't know you had such a deal at any of the places you sold stuff. Yeah it is a shame you can't do it on paizo as well.

Cool. I would think that Paizo would have such a set up available since they offer so many subscription items in a similar manner. Anyways, I value the use of a PDF enough I will be buying it via IPR as of now. Yeah, it costs a couple of dollars more, but the PDF is worth it to me. Especially when I consider that with the PDF price at all the other sites getting both would cost me nearly $40, before shipping costs, but with the IPR deal I get both for $24.11, after shipping via USPS First Class.

Its end of month, so I'll have to wait until I get paid either Friday or Monday to make the actual payment.

Actually, we've been experimenting with that, and have now pretty much worked it out—it's now doable for publishers who do both print and PDF consignment through us.

One thing for you to note, though, is that—as anybody who consigns both print and PDF with us knows—because print products carry additional costs for us in warehousing, inventory management, and other overhead, we pay a slightly smaller percentage for print consignment than we do for PDF consignment, and since the bundle would contain a print product, we'd have to treat it as a print product for determining consignment percentages.

If you're interested in that, just let Jeff Alvarez know.

You're welcome for all three of the ENWorld reviews. I would post them at RPGNow as well but you can't unless you buy it there. *shrug* Anyways maybe by me doing that it will net you a few extra sales on the three books.

So I bought the bundle and downloaded the PDF. I am absolutely bowled over. The prosthetics section is amazing. I loved Aurora's Whole Sale Realms, and I'm of the opinion that your product puts it to shame.
