A second request on that question; I greatly prefer landscape-orientation instead of portrait for GM screens.

EDIT: yep, portrait. Not a deal breaker...

Also, is there anything else in the package besides the screen itself? A small adventure, additional charts and tables, or even a short essay set?

Yes, portrait orientation. I prefer Landscape, myself but as you said, not a deal breaker.

No, that's Lini, the iconic gnome druid.

I realized this right after I posted. I saw the tiger animal companion and I was like "There's NO way that could be an elf, unless they made elves suddenly like Christmas Elves."

I failed my Bardic Knowledge check for RPG iconics enough that I got false information. I guess I'm just not steeped enough in Pathfinder Lore, still in the 3.5 iconics mindset.....

Okay, I want this, I really do, because I love a good DM screen on the DM side,

Having said that, am I the only person getting tired of the same Iconic art rehashed over and over and over. It's on the covers of my APs its in each class description in my beta copy and my final copy, and now it's on the danged DM screen. I love the iconics and the artist did tremendous work, but couldn't he at least have gotten comissioned to do new poses instead of just copy pasting the same images in a panorama?

Second. I'll give them a pass for this one, but it's getting kind of stale. If you HAVE to cut and paste artwork, how about some action shots from the adventures? These poses have a whole "I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am" feel to them.

Pffft, you can never have too much of Wayne's Seoni.

Here, here, expensively bought WAR art for the win! Hopefully the success of PFRPG gives them the funds to buy more!

Which is exactly why I would have hoped they bought more so that we'd have new wayne reynolds Seoni on the cover instead of Seoni we've seen x times before.

There was no way that we could get Wayne to do new artwork for this and have it come out in 2009. Wayne is a very busy artist and we have trouble finding time for him to do the books he does for us (he does do work for other companies from time to time too). We had talked with him about doing something new for the screen, but it just wasn't in the cards. However, I love the iconic art he has done and the screen layout is beautiful. Maybe for the 10th anniversary GM Screen in 2019?

I am so looking forward to this product as the 3.5 shield I'm using now is frankly rubbish all thats on the back of it is skill check DC's and a long list of what types of action various options are and whether or not they provoke an AoO. I'm hoping that this shield will be a lot more useful. Plus hardback book stock panels!! Can't wait.

so if it is OGL, does that mean it wont have the PFRPG rule changes on the screen?

Im a newbie and trying to understand the difference. I thought Open Gaming License (OGL) was for the 3.5 edition which was licensed from that other company. They just did a revamp of 3.5 in PFRPG, call it 3.6 for lack of better terms and all of the new products have (PFRPG) codes next to the descriptor.

for example, from the catalogue

Old rules...

Pathfinder #13—Second Darkness Chapter 1: "Shadow in the Sky"—Alternate Cover (OGL)

New rules with the core handbook released at Gencon...

Pathfinder: Council of Thieves Player's Guide (PFRPG)

So if the new screen that is being released is advertised with (OGL), I am assuming it has charts from the old 3.5 stuff and not the new Core rulebook.

Osirion (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path Subscriber)

OGL refers to the Open Gaming License, not to the rules published under this license.

The old 3.0 and 3.5 rules were open, meaning others could copy them and use them in their own books. This is the major factor that allows Paizo to do what they are doing with their rules. PFRPG is also OGL, meaning it is published under the OGL and that other publishers can use the rules in their own books. See page 569 of the rulebook for the license itself.

Poor half-orc, he´s ugly and nobody called him to pose...:(

Wow, that'll be a lot better than the home made GM screen I'm using (a frosted mini wheats box). Though I'm curious as to what charts it includes. I've added a lot of handy charts to my GM screen, and want to know if their charts would be better. Does anyone have a full list of what charts are printed on this?

Sadly, I don't think that this version will have any nutritional facts.

Jam412 wrote:

Alas, the information contained therein is very useful for my campaign. However, if I knew what charts the Pathfinder GM screen contained, I might sacrifice the nutritional facts.

AWESOME! A must have!

If anyone doesn't like the iconics, just do what I do - my players draw their figures (most are articistic) and I clip those to the screen, or I cut up a beautiful shot of Conan from Frazetta and put that on a panel - or for example, I cut out a picture of Grazz't with his lover from an old Dragon magazine...every few months I will change it up.

Too bad we have to wait...this is a nice screen.

Brandonb70 wrote:

Like I said before, it *would* have been even *better* with valiant Hellknights trampling foes of Cheliax and Inquisitors of Asmodeus torturing infidels -- however, even as it is, it's the best-looking GM screen I've yet seen (even "recycled" WAR pieces totally rock!). Congratulations to the Art Director (Sarah?), too! :)

Lisa, speaking of those Hellknights and Inquisitors... maybe the second printing will include them, hey? ;P

I'm wondering if the screen is landscape as well. Looks like it from the picture. Can anyone confirm it?

It's not landscape. It's 4 panels wide.

It should be shipping in early October, along with the Bestiary.

In the interview Jason made at GenCon OZ he mentioned that this was due from the printer at any time, maybe even as he was there, so it sounds like they are just waiting for the ship to come in and clear customs

Some of us do like that it's easier to see over a landscape-format screen. But many of us feel that the 34" arc of a vertical 4-panel screen is about right, while the 44" arc of a horizontal screen is just too big.

I guess you can't please all the folks, all the time... and I would be one of those un-pleased folks. After GM'ing with a landscape screen (Savage Worlds customizable one that is currently out of print) I now really dislike potrait/vertical screens.

Quote:
The real dealbreaker for the horizontal format for us, I think, is that since your books, dice, minis and such usually block the bottom inch or two of the screen, horizontal layout means we'd lose as much as 20 square inches of useful printable area for tables (compared to vertical layout). That's a fair amount of real estate that we can put to good use.

In my 25 years of rpg'ing I have never really found this to be a problem. The GM screen is more of a "privacy block" than it is a "constant reference". I'm guessing that in the average gaming session I refer to the GM screen at most, 5 times. I can't recall there being anything blocking the tables I was looking at but a quick and simple small shift of either a book or dice alleviates this concern, for the few times it is being referenced.

I'm sorry Vic, but this "blocking of the screen" just doesn't seem like a strong enough reason to have not made a landscape screen. Once you use one, its hard to go back to a portrait screen.

Vic Wertz wrote:

I think I now see where the problem is. A 3-panel horizontal only measures about 35" (As per the Savage Worlds customizable GM screen). I am guessing that at 44" you spec'd out a 4 panel screen. I certainly would not want a 4 panel landscape screen, but I would just prefer slightly smaller print / tables, to fit the horizontal screen. (I often find that on a 4 panel screen, that there is much white space, graphics or filler material).

Oh well, although I am sad that no landscape screen was made, I will just resize the PF screen and and make inserts for my Savage Worlds screen. (I'm assuming that the screen will also be sold as a PDF).

Well, our screen is pretty full—there's about an inch margin at the bottom, and half-inch margins around each panel, but the rest is full of charts and such. Inside those margins, there's no art and no white space... just data. And, horizontal vs. vertical aside for a moment, moving to a 3-panel screen would mean you'd get 25% less data, minimum.

Cheliax (Pathfinder Charter Superscriber; GameMastery Maps Subscriber)

As long as the screen doesn't contain images of miniatures I'm a happy camper. :)

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Well good thing I'm a subscriber so I don't have to wait for my copy of the bestiary to get here before I can do a full conversion. I bundled everything together when I preordered a month or so ago.

do you guys know what part of november it will be?

Oh my goodness... this looks great! I think this will be the first DM Screen I have bought since 2nd Edition.

Please... PLEASE! For the love of Tiamat... release a high-res jpg of the cover that I can spread as wallpaper across all 3 monitors I have at work. That would be sweet. :-D

At this point, the printer estimates mid-November. But there's still plenty of time for that to move either way.
