Kill Doctor Lucky, which sold out last holiday season, is returning to print, with a new lower price—and it now includes the "...And His Little Dog Too!" expansion!

Are the components inferior? Basically why is it cheaper AND have the expansion in it?

Not that I will not be getting it but just curious.

A couple of things. The first version had painted wood pawns. Because of all the issues with proving that the painted pawns weren't full of lead and such, we decided to go with cardboard characters representing the various people trying to kill the good doctor instead. We also found a really good printing price that allowed us to drop the price to the $29.99, a pricepoint that we were always aiming for but couldn't because of the printing price. Now, are the cardboard characters with all new art inferior to generic painted pawns? I guess that is something that each person will have to answer for themselves. Personally, I think that it is a step up in quality.

The cardboard characters look pretty cool in the picture provided. I can't wait to get this!

Can we buy the cardboard characters separately? I already have the game and the Doggie Expansion.

Hmm. We hadn't considered that, but we can look into it...

I'd be interested in that myself, especially if it came with a spare copy of the rules sheet.

My 1st edition and the dog are all nice quality, except the rules sheet, which was printed on overly thin paper to withstand playing with my niece and nephew. Something with heavier cardstock would be nice.

I'm super excited to play this! I've wanted it for a few years now and finally getting the chance to pick it up will be awesome.

Is it just me or does "throw you a wobbly" sound like something dirty?

Will you have an option to by the wooden pawns and the wooden spite chits as an expansion or just something to use with other games?

I've got the 1st edition, but it would be nice for people who want to retrofit their set.

Unfortunately, no. We haven't figured out how to get stuff like that made with all the new US regulations on paint and lead content. The legalities are a bit intimidating, so we are steering far away and focusing on printed paper. :)

It's been two months since the last update...any word on when the game will be ready? I'd really like to give it as a present but if it isn't out soon then that won't be possible...

Thanks.

It's on the boat from the printer, but it probably won't arrive before Christmas.

Wow, the game would be worth it for the gameboard alone... I only played the german version of the original cheapass game, and it has come a far way from there.

The button has changed from "Preorder" to "Add to Cart," and the page now says "Usually ships from our warehouse in 3 to 6 business days," does this mean it's shippng now? My girlfriend and I have been trying to buy this game for a couple years now and are very excited about the reprint. If it doesn't come by xmas, I guess it will be a nice surprise a few weeks down the line.

D'oh! Somebody set the release date as January 2009 instead of 2010. Fixed now.

Sadly, it's still in transit, and *not* in the warehouse.

Somebody is going to lose their biscuit's for a week over that one!

I heard today that it is in the port of Seattle right now. But sadly not in the warehouse. But soon. Soon.

Excellent *rubs hands together in glee* I have been after this game for a long time and can't get it anywhere in the UK, and was pretty suprised that the P&P wasn't too bad either.

Merry Christmas All!
(except for you Dr Lucky, and your little dog too... you're mine!)

I don't know, I kinda like my allegdely lead-base painted wooden pawns, especially Shamrock. But I'm also the guy who spends $60($30 + $30 shipping) an old UK board game mostly for the unique, molded plastic pieces.

Andoran (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Roleplaying Game, Campaign Setting, Companion, Tales, Battles Case, GameMastery Maps Subscriber)

Yeah mine will soon be here for family fun! It does come with family fun right? :)

I've looked at the deluxe game since the first printing (always loved the envelope version -- just played it last night in fact). With the deluxe, however, I've always wondered why the board wasn't double-sided with the Craigdarroch mansion on the other side. That would have made it much more appealing at the previous, higher price point.

At this new price, however, it's looking pretty good as it is. . . .

I love this game. This is my first time playing so I dont know if the older version dicscuss the situation I am having when playing. If you guys can let me know I would really appreciate it. Here is the scenerio: Player A uses either a move card or room card to move Dr lucky into a room where player B is and has the ability to make an attempt on his life. Does player A turn ends and player B get to make that attempt, or does player B get no attempt and when player A ends his go dr. lucky moves to the next room unscathed. Thank you guy in advance for taking the time out to help me.

Is there any chance the Save Doctor Lucky game will be seeing print any time soon?

Note the following, under Who Goes Next: "...Doctor Lucky can change the turn order by moving into an occupied room. This can only happen when he takes his move after a player's turn." Thus, being moved by a player does not trigger a change in the turn order.

Player B does not get to make a murder attempt when the Doctor moves into his room, because it's not his turn. Player A gets to finish his turn as usual, and then the Doctor moves as usual, and the turn proceeds to the next player as usual (unless there was a player in the room that the Doctor just moved to, in which case that player goes next).

We're currently contemplating that....

I was killing time at a Barnes & Noble this afternoon and used one of their product search kiosks to see if they had any Paizo books in stock (they did) and came across a product called "Save Doctor Lucky" set for October 2010. I take it you guys came to a conclusion on the question above or does B&N have something mixed up?

Looks like they're just pulling raw ISBN data. We did order an ISBN for it, though we have not committed to a release date—or for that matter, to doing it at all. It's still in the exploratory phase here.

Just picked it up over the weekend, first time I've seen it available since I first played it.

One question though. Did the most recent release alter using spite tokens to foil attempts? I seem to recall that being included when I first played it. Or was it a variant/house rule?

Spite tokens were added as an optional variant rule in the Cheapass Games "Director's Cut" edition in 2002. In that version, each spite token gave you a 1-point bonus on your murder attempts, and they could also be spent as a failure card equivalent.

In the first Paizo (technically, Titanic Games) edition in 2006, spite tokens worked the same way as the Director's Cut, but they were now formally incorporated into the basic rules.

However, we found that, under certain circumstances, the ability to use spite tokens as failures could deadlock the game (or at least make it really, really long), so we removed that part of the rule for the 2009 edition—now spite tokens just give you a bonus on murder attempts.

To update this old post... we did announce Save Doctor Lucky in August; it should be out at the end of November/beginning of December.

Is it possible for those who already possess the 2006 edition (and the dog expansion for that matter) to download a PDF of the revised 2009 rules?

Similarly, is it possible to purchase the cardboard pawns from the 2009 edition without the rest of the set in case you want to either have the really complete set?

Kevin Andrew Murphy wrote:

Currently, no... and because they contain the rules from the expansion, giving them away for free would pretty much kill sales of the expansion for the older edition (which consists of those rules and a wooden pawn).

Kevin Andrew Murphy wrote:

Nope—we don't have any spare parts, just complete games.

I miss the wooden pawns and spite tokens. I gave away my old copy and bought a replacement without looking closely. The changes make me sad, even if they were necessary.

It may not be readily apparent why I'm linking to this YouTube video from here, but watch for a bit... You'll see.

Paul F. Tompkins plays "Geek Game or Extreme Metal Band?"

I have been playing this game for a couple months now. My family completely loves this board game. It is very entertaining and exciting.

I got to play this game at a convention a few months back, (Since then I've played a few times with a friend's old pre-Sinking Ship version) and it made me want to purchase my own copy. Unfortunately the con had the previous Titanic version, and I find I can't convince myself to get this one.

The standee's aren't attractive to me, but in principle at least I could understand the concept, and an attempt was made to make them attractive. However, it is the switching of the spite tokens to little paper/cardboard chits lowers the value enough to me that, in conjunction with the aforementioned...let's be nice and say "side-graded" player pieces, make it hard to see the game as worthwhile physically. While the pawn's replacement held a shred of interesting presence in the new parts, I couldn't really see anything of value in the "new" spite tokens.

I'm glad I read these comments though, as I do sympathize with you on the new US "Prove there's no lead" issue. I'm curious how a few other board game companies I've gotten products from have gotten around it. It certainly explains the switch away from the classic feeling wooden pieces in the previous copies.

Still, while this understanding sways me a bit I have no desire to buy a game as it stands now. It seems to me there should be a middle ground between what it was and what it is. A game that is supposedly premium, deluxe and finely made when it's components are virtually nothing but cheap cardboard. These paper chits strike me as just plain sad, valueless. I typically felt I had higher quality pieces in the Pre-Sinking version, when the person I knew used milk jug lids (Mind you, I admit it didn't come with them...). The board, while from what I've seen a repeat of the wonderful previous printing is not alone worth the entry price to me, even with the expanded rules inside.

I do want to make something clear, I do love your products, and own a good chunk. I just can't bring myself to see the current printing of this as "worth it". Maybe I was spoiled seeing the old one, but then I've also seen the REALLY OLD one. I don't know.
