Yeah, I need some extra cash to afford this, the GM Guide plus Pathfinder and the Beastiary plus my normal subscription, plus that other book by the 3PP...ugh...
So the product information on the players guide, game masters guide, players companion, and game masters companion are all the same. What all is in each book? Which would constitue REQUIRED matterial, and which is highly important?
Also, back when I played earthdawn there was a companion with a sky captian class, and another class (I forget the specific, but I think some type of profesional adventurer). Are these in any of these books?
I'm tickled pink seeing earthdawn stuff again, and happy to discover it's similar to the edition I played way back when. It's just a LOT of money to fork out and not really know much about the books.

Hi Fraust!
The two disciplines that were in 1st edition's Earthdawn Companion were the Air Sailor and Scout. Both have been incorporated into the Player's Guide.
The two Guides are the only *required* books--the Companions expand the rules (including allowing players to advance characters above 8th Circle), granting options and the like.
The Player's Guide & Companion contain compiled and updated rules--plus some new material--from the following 1st edition books: Earthdawn First Edition Rulebook, Earthdawn Companion, Magic: A Manual of Mystic Secrets, Arcane Mysteries of Barsaive, The Adept’s Way, and material from all of the Game Information chapters found in the original sourcebooks.
The Gamemaster's Guide & Companion contain compiled and updated rules--plus some new material--from the following 1st edition books: Earthdawn First Edition Rulebook, Earthdawn Gamemaster Pack, Earthdawn Companion, Earthdawn Survival Guide, The Barsaive Boxed Set, Creatures of Barsaive, Dragons, Horrors, and material from all of the Game Information chapters found in the original sourcebooks.
Cool, thanks for the heads up. I really wish I'd taken the time at gencon to look through these when I had the books physically infront of me.
I'm assuming basic character creation and all that is in the players guide, how to run combat, how to cast spells...basic game mechanics... the game master's guide would be more designing adventures and whatnot? Monster stats? Basically my question is, could you run an adventure with just the players guide?

Yes. Over 100 pages of the GM's Guide are dedicated to campaign setting and fluff. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of crunch: monster, Horror, spirit, and dragon stats; magic items; how to deal with the environment, poison, traps, etc.; and, of course, the obligatory "How to GM/create campaigns" sections.
But, if you're prepared to wing it and create your own monsters/campaign setting and so forth, the Player's Guide is all you really need. You can always upgrade to the GM's Guide at a later date, if you choose.
Also, if you get the Player's Guide (and maybe later the Player's Companion), and you want the monsters and so forth, you can save a bit of money by purchasing the 1st edition PDFs, which we also provide (they can be found over at drivethru.rpg).
The rules are largely compatible, and you can pick up the 1st edition Horrors book, Creatures of Barsaive, etc. for about $12 or so each.

Hank, I only see the one free adventure, Misguided Ambitions. Is the other hiding somewhere? I could use a pair of free adventures to hook my gaming group on the Earthdawn I remember from my youth!

I just spoke with Carsten (line developer), and he said he took it down so we could--at some point--update it to 3E. So, let me amend what I said: We have 1 free adventure with another on the way (at some point)! ;)

It's admittedly non-obvious, but the last paragraph of the product description differs for each product.

Guess I should have looked a little closer. Thanks Vic
Is there any chance to re-release the original mods as well as the {Earthdawn Journals} ? i loved the game , and think of it as the origin point for D&D 3.0.

The original mods will be coming, currently in two compiled installments. Unfortunately, there are no plans to re-release any of the content from the Earthdawn Journals.
I've been running a 2nd ed. campaign for the last couple years, and if it's an easy convert or follow-on to 2nd edition rules, I'd love for my players to be able to pick up their own 3rd ed. handbooks instead of constantly borrowing my own out of print 1st and 2nd's. I'm a lot less enthusiastic about doing a full rules reset.

Well, they're all more or less compatible, but there are going to be some contradictions with some of the talents (minor changes, really), and of course the method of Discipline advancement is going to be quite different.
