I have had a chance to go through both books now. I carry them with me when I go to play and they have both seen use before and during the Second Darkness campaign. I have taken to putting paperclips where I think important charts that might be used multiple times are located. As such each one has about 10-15 paperclips in it. I agree with an earlier poster that a PDF version would be nice for laptop users who GM. I will keep checking in to see where that idea goes. Consider me an early possible purchaser. Within the confines of a limited gaming budget of course.
DM Jeff, I have ordered both the Toolbox and Ultimate Toolbox.
Well, we sure hope you get loads of use out of them both! Let us know what you think!

I bought the book a few weeks ago went it first hit gaming stores in US and Canada. I must say: 400 pages of fantasy rpg geek fabulousness!! If ever I am stumped for ideas, for any reason great or small, this book will cure it.
Love. This. Tome. I was very happy with the original and brought that to all the games I GM'ed -- almost like a security blanket! LOL (How geeky is that?) This new book now rules.
Admittedly I initially balked at the price (in Canada ~$50), but it weighed sooo much -- both in mass AND in information -- I realized it was a good reference to add it to my library.
Listen folks, game referees in particular, this creative ideas reference book is geared to fantasy roleplaying -- but *any* game system! Therefore it is viable for _ALL_ fprgs!! I don't know how long this will be on the market, but don't miss out. Set aside a little $$ over the next few weeks, and then pick up a copy. I bet you'll be glad to get it! I am very happy with mine.

PS to DM Jeff: are you folks thinking of a similar book geared to modern and sci-fi genres of rpgs? I bet it would be a good seller! :-)

Used the book - along the original Toolbox - yesterday to sketch out some villages and the outlying coastal area, adding some NPCs, legends, specific places (dungeons, druidic groves, etc.), and various bits of information.
I had to actually stop myself from over-detailing characters or inns, shops and other locations, as very often - while flipping the pages - I spotted a table or two that could be useful in fleshing out some more the element I was working on.
Excellent results, the combo produces some jewels sparkling with potential all by themselves.

We know a whole cadre of GM's who took Toolbox with them to each game along with their core books 'just in case' a scenario came along they needed a nudge with. Heck, if just holding it makes you feel better game on! We're really glad you are getting so much out of it, thanks for the kind words!

Back in the day we talked about such a thing with AEG but never persued it. I dunno, who wishes there were a modern/future version of Toolbox?

I want to game with you.
:)
My favorite way to use either book, is to roll up about 20 random things from 20 random charts, put them on a sheet of paper about an hour before a game and see what comes up (like the oracle concept in indie rpgs). It's amazing how many times that gets me a story or element to a story I wouldn't have done initially... my entire Haranshire campaign had a turf war going on in the background because of one chart in the toolbox.

Exactly.
A small village meant to be a one-time stop for the PCs to gather rumors about the recent pirate activity has suddenly become a nest of plots, colourful characters and exotic atmosphere.
Ya Jeff,
I own the Tookbox --- one of the VERY best books in my vast collection.
My Bookshelf is getting pretty packed,, and I'm really starting to like the PDF books (printable and all) - If you guys make a PDF version available... I'm all over it.
Have you guys decided if you will or not?
I've just ordered the Ultimate Toolbox despite the *cough* price tag and *cough* shipping costs to Europe.
Still, from what I've seen it will be worth the investment. I hate getting caught flat-footed during my game sessions, this investment should help out with that :)

What a cool idea. We wrote the thing and I hadn't thought of that before. Let's see what we get. Random page flipping and d20 die rolling, what can we make of this?
Walks with hunched shame
Heavy rain
Problems with authority
Vendetta against noble houses
Onyx wastes
Baneberry
Constellations shift form
Hidden with magic
Rvis, kobold god of scorpions and venom
Deep in the Halls of Tyranny
High crime rate in alleys
Dream interpretation
Festival of arts
Crystal rod in clay square
Shade of the Tower Court
Rivalry between superior and inferior
Mallery Slate: Draconic, nervously twitching while works
Plane of Torment
Mapmaking or star charting
Helm of domination

OK, this looks like fun improv! *cracks knuckles*
In the shade of the Tower Court, a figure walks through the heavy rain hunched in shame. Mallery Slate, a Draconic astrological cartographer from the Onyx Wastes ponders his failure in accessing the Temple of Rvis, kobold god of scorpions and venom. Within that temple, hidden with magic, is a crystal rod set in a clay square. This rod holds the key to freeing an entity from the Plane of Torment.
This entity, called Brofgor, is imprisoned within the fabled Halls of Tyranny on the Plane of Torment. He contacted Mallery through his dreams of revenge and power. He has promised Mallery a Helm of Domination if he releases him from his prison. Mallery desires this artifact to wreak vengance on the nobility of the Tower Court, who he blames for his many problems. He had hoped that he could get the rod before the shift in constellations that will occur just before the upcoming arts festival. He had hoped to dominate the nobles at the festival with his new helm, but now his plan lies in disarray. The constellation shidt is the perfect time to attempt Brofgor's release.
Reaching his chartshop, he bolts the several locks he has against the many thieves in his neighborhood. Twitching miserably, he lies on his ragged bed, eating a handful of baneberry to bring about lurid dreams, hoping he could beseech Brofgor for more information on how to obtain the crystal rod before the constellation shift.

That's the stuff, brilliant! Don't you love it when lists come together?

Thanks DM Jeff. Fantastic book BTW. I just got it the other day and I am still perusing it. Good stuff, very catalytic for story ideas (as shown with the previous post! :)
I noticed the weapons section was a lot smaller than the previous book. Was this because of the decision to not have repetitive content?
I had really hoped for some sort of chart for each type of weapon. A table for all types of blunt weapons edged weapons daggers bows and so on. Then have another chart with weapon prefixes and suffixes. Then do the same for armor different types of chain plate scale and so on then have prefixes and suffixes for the armor.
If something like this already exists in this massif book it is certainly not in the index or table of contents.
perhaps there is going to be another ultimate toolbox. O i think my head would explode from my shoulders if that was the case!

It was. We did some lists in UT, but tried more focusing on idea generating tables rather than just lists. Sorry we didn't do such a chart in there for you. Sounds like something for the online freebie jim and I are working on, stay tuned!

I just had in in the mail today!
Awesome book, and exactly what I need to spice up my, well, to spice up everything! Great job done!
One of the funniest tables is
PLACES TO HIDE THIS BOOK somewhere in the appendix. On the same page is a table USES FOR GNOMES which is empty. Either I didn't get the joke, or ots a printing error...

I will definitely buy a PDF version too. Great book, by the way!
Glad you like it so far Toby!

I'm very tempted to buy this thing in its physical form and a virutal form, one for sitting down and flipping thro pages the other for working on the puter as I have begun using OneNote to organize my campaign. To be able to take certain items from a pdf into my notebook that I use while GM'ing a session would be awesome I think. And then have the book for those... uh oh what now situations.
As a European I have been scouring the net for a EU vendor since we pay a hefty tax price about ½ total cost for importing from outside EU. For you other Europeans I managed to find one on Ebay in UK.
My biggest problem now is that I'm also very interrested in the first Toolbox which I have never heard of until now, but alas that I can only find in the US. If anyone has a lead on a EU vendor who still has one in stock and willing to ship to DK, I'd be happy to hear about it :)
Looking forward to a full pdf version there Jeff, been browsing the previews and it looks great.
My hopes for these books are high, as I'm running a Forgotten realms spy-inspired campaign. The need for details and out of the blue stuff is big and from what i'm reading on the net about these publications I'm expecting them to be able to provide that or at the very least the inspiration for them :)

I googled all over but sadly many of them are in languages I don't speak. Gereedschapskistspelboek. I'll work on that. :-)
I know original Toolbox is available as a PDF but sadly I don't recommend it, it's not searchable text. Ultimate Toolbox PDF will be searchable!
Hope you gets tons of use out of it for your spy oriented game!

ecstatic!
turns out a bookpriceserch service in denmark found the toolbox locally at a vendor in DK how lucky can you get :D
As I'm such a computer GM... do you know where could I get my hands on the pdf versioin ?
been using the pdf of the old toolbox loving it. Yesterday, the Ultimate came with the mail.. and... oh... my... god! the sheer pleasure of just holding it in my hands... I .. I ... I'm lost for words :D
did a fast flipping through it and I am already in love, this will also be bought on pdf for sure, just to have that extra dimension of preparation.
No Polish names in the random names tables ! How could you ! I can provide a list if needed :)
Oi. You know, I actually seem to remember thinking at one point 'with all these name charts we're doing we're bound to leave something out'...and look what we did! Hey, you know, if you could make a chart of 20 male and female Polish names that would be super!
P.S. Glad you like the book!
