Pathfinder Module D1.5: Revenge of the Kobold King (OGL)

A dungeon-based adventure for 5th-level characters.

It should have been the end. When the bloodthirsty adventurers burst into his throne room and mercilessly cut him down, the tale of Merlokrep, last king of the ill-fated Truescale Tribe, should have ended. But the fates weren’t yet finished with the Kobold King, and now a dark power has brought him back from the dark beyond to wreak his vengeance upon those foolish adventurers who destroyed his tribe.

Revenge of the Kobold King is compatible with the world’s most popular roleplaying game. This takes your heroes back beneath the haunted trees of Darkmoon Wood and into an ancient Azlanti crypt in search of the all-too-familiar monsters that are brutally murdering the people of Falcon’s Hollow. This adventure returns to Darkmoon Vale, an area of the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting first visited in D1: Crown of the Kobold King and E1: Carnival of Tears, and further detailed in Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to Darkmoon Vale.

Written by Nicolas Logue.

This 16-page adventure was initially made available for Free RPG Day on June 21, 2008.

I've got the Paizo offering and a couple of other things at Free RPG Day, but having run the last Free RPG Day Paizo adventure, I am very gung ho to run this new one. I've done a little bit of prep to make it more fun . . . click for images

That's awesome. Where'd you get the huge maps from?

From the adventure itself. Last time I did this with the Dwarven Monastery and I've used that for a handful of other scenarios. If I had had a bit more time, I considered 3Ding the buildings, log pile, and cart, phasing the latter two off of the actual fullsize map. I know I will get a lot more use from the lumber yard as a thorp in future non-related scenarios though the tomb mound is a bit trickier.

I scan the booklet (use the best quality settings your scanner can allow), adjust the image to 300dpi (better if your computer won't choke on large images), enlarge them enough and break it up into roughly 8 x 10 sections (there's always some pixelating, but they still look pretty good), then put it together into a pdf for printing (to be sure the size from section to section stays accurate). I even allow there to be some overlap between section images.

It is worth allowing the images to overlap, IMO, and cut them smaller than the image to avoid border lines in the middle of the map. I've tried a couple of methods for mounting but prefer to glue stick them to foam board (available at any art supply or craft store) then cover them with laminate sheets. When I cut them up so they fold, I also add some tape to the back as a sort of hinge.

Some people might keep them all as one large image if they have to computer power to do so and print them on a plotter if they have one, but the best I can do is use the local UPS store which has a $.35 sale on color printing at the moment. I only print b&w at home.

I use maps like those above or flip mats, DDM maps, maps from the old Dragon (feels weird to call it old), e-Adventure Tiles, and map packs, but I place them all on a megamat so that the players never feel they need be confined to the edges of the map.

They are not as nice as the printed maps you get with minis sets or from the old mags, but they give the table a little more oomph than just drawing on the battle mat.

Why is this not included in my subscription? This just results in more postage costs.

I believe the Free RPG Day modules aren't part of subscription to encourage everyone who has a subscription to go down to their FLGS and participate! :) Since supporting your local store is what these modules are all about, it would rather dull the point if Paizo were to include them in subscriptions, plus a lot of people would end up paying for a module they'd already picked up for free :).

Just a little side note. Free RPG Day may allow players to get items for free, but the stores that participated had to pay for these items. In essence, participating stores will be losing money. That is why my store did not have a Free RPG Day.

On a side note, when I bought this module, should the PDF have gone into my downloads, or do I need to click the Add PDF Button.

You need to add it separately.

I would love to see a mini-pathfinder adventure path(2-3 issues) using the adventure hook idea at the end of the module. Something pitting the group against the lumber consortium and 'freeing' Falcon's Hollow would be great.

Creative Mountain,

I will be running Hollow's Last Hope, Crown of the Kobold King and Revenge of the Kobold King at Gencon. Folks can sign up through an EN World Gencon Events thread here -

Really enjoyed this one.

And not that I'm one to complain, but the one area of improvement (perhaps a matter of taste) is in the dungeon.

Spoiler:
I was disappointed to find elementals in two of the rooms! I know the party is low level, but you could invent an ash dragon coming down from the cloud, make it a low enough CR to fight the PCs, or maybe replace the water elementals with water forming into some sort of ancient warforged, again, adjusted for level....

Still, by far one of my all-time favorite adventures!
