The Gamers: Dorkness Rising follows Lodge, Dungeon Master and budding writer, who wants his gaming group to finish their adventure. Unfortunately, they’re more interested in seducing barmaids, mooning their enemies, and setting random villagers on fire. Desperate to rein in his players, Lodge injects two newbies into the fray: a non-player character controlled by Lodge, whom the power gamers immediately distrust, and the rarest gamer of all—a girl. Can the group overcome their bickering to save the kingdom, or will the evil necromancer Mort Kemnon triumph unopposed? A parody of fantasy films and the adventure gaming community, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is a hilarious romp through the world of sword and sorcery—in this case, a world of exploding peasants, giant house cats, and undead roast turkeys. The trailer can be found at www.the-gamers.com.

Shot in high definition, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is the most ambitious feature film that Dead Gentlemen Productions has produced to date. It was test screened in 2006 at the Gen Con game fair to standing ovations and standing room only. Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, creators of the Dragonlance novels & New York Times Bestselling authors, called it "a critical hit! ...Original and funny—a real treat for fans of both fantasy and gaming.”

    Special Features:
  • Outtakes
  • "Dorkness" Screening
  • Behind the Scenes
  • Teaser Trailer

This is a Region 1 NTSC DVD, presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

David Campbell 16,

I'm excited, as I will be at GenCon and can pick up my copy... but... Gencon runs the 14-17.. and the announcement says you will have it there on the 18th?

Sigh. That'll teach me not to double-check dates in a press release. It'll be the 14th.

David Campbell 16,

Cool. I'd hate to have to circle the center until your booth opened on Monday, which is the kind of thing I might do to get this movie.

Ben Dobyns,

Hi! I just wanted to drop by and let everyone know that Dead Gentlemen will be checking in here periodically to answer questions about the upcoming Dorkness Rising release. If you have any burning queries, please don't hesitate to post them!

Thanks,

Ben Dobyns
Director of Development
Dead Gentlemen Productions

Lasse Johansen,

I was just wondering, if there is an answer to this yet, will the release be region free? Or something to that effect, seeing as I'm stuck far away in the "second region".

In any case, looking forwards to finally seeing it!

Just wanted to say that I'm one of the lucky folks who got to see this at GenCon. It is easiest the best gamer movie. My two daughters and I were in great awe, being huge fans of the first.

Not only is Dorkness Rising super-funny, it also has heart. Can't wait for the DVD release!

Unfortunately, a region free release would lock us out of a number of larger domestic markets, so this will be region 1. But... 1) we can now sell distribution rights in other countries and 2) there are several delightful options available for viewing region-encoded material on your computer or television. We're definitely aware of our international fans and will work hard to make sure that you are able to acquire and watch the movie! (If you know a distributor in your country, why not let them know that most international rights are still available?)

It will be an automatic cult favorite... maybe a fave for those not part of a cult too! We'll see. :)

Just wanted to add that this movie is greatly anticipated by our gaming group. It's been a tough wait, but from what I've heard, more than worth the wait. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Ben! I've updated the product description.

Thaladar,

Preordered! Our group has been looking forward to this for years! Very exciting news. Can't make Gencon, but will be looking for this in the mail.

But "shot in high definition" and released as NTSC? Where's the Blu-Ray version? :-)

Comic Book Ink,

We've already sold over 175 copies of the original DVD and we are PSYCHED about the release of 2.0!

Here's hoping we can have a signing at our shop (in Tacoma, Washington) after Gen Con (yay) release for our "Home Town Heroes"!

Folks here are gonna plotz when they see it!

Yup..we used plotz as a verb.

Ben Dobyns,

The HD version is beautiful, but we don't yet know when our distributor will release it in that format. For what is a relatively small film, the uncertainty and size of the HD market are big considerations.

Socks,

I just want to be sure: if we pre-order here, we can pick them up at GenCon? My current plan was just to hit the booth ASAP on Thursday, but if I can pre-order here and be assured of a copy, I'll definitely do that. I just know I'm not leaving GenCon without two copies of this movie (one for a friend who can't go this year)!

Where do I sign up for this cult? I have been a fan for years but I think I'm ready to take my worship to the next level. Provided there's not a suicide clause... or cutting off body parts.

Yea...I'm in region 3 and if its not going to be region-free (or at least in various regions) then I'm going to miss out this great story! :(

To kind of add on from the previous post, I am in Australia, if I buy the DVD will I be able to run it in Australia which is region 4?

Only if you have a region-free player, and a monitor that will let you view NTSC material (pretty much any digital monitor probably can, while analog PAL TVs won't).

JAaronM73,

So will you guys be at DragonCon,
Or have a distributor there?

We are looking into what options we have to have a seller to DragonCon this year. So we don't know yet, but we'll keep you posted. :)

Tadanori,

I am so very happy to finally be able to see this movie. I've been waiting in anticipation for over a year, ever since I listened to your PodCast with the Wizards of the Coast Staff back in 02/2007.

Me, and all my players, are planning a big old movie night. The guy with the biggest TV hosts, we all bring popcorn and such. Defintally going to be fun.

David Ditmeyer,

Will there be any audio commentaries on the film?

SWolbrecht,

David Ditmeyer wrote:

Unfortunately no, we didn't have the opportunity to include commentary tracks with this run of the DVD. If we eventually do another run of DVD and have the option to add more content, our plan is to include commentary tracks if time and space allow (a la The Gamers and The Gamers: Director's Cut - we threw on a lot of extra content on the second run of the DVD).

Paizo Employee Sean K Reynolds (Developer),

Should you lack time and space, you could also do an online file (podcast, mp3, whatever) of commentary, designed to be played with the TV muted.

Heck, I might do my own. With ... long stretches of no commentary for the scenes I'm not in. Laughter, but no commentary. ;)

Hi Sean! :)

Possible example of Sean's commentary for scenes he's not in:

"This scene would have had WAY less suck if a creepy Hierophant's assistant had been involved. Just sayin'."

And you'll be able to see yourself on the big screen at GenCon (finally!).

Hey, I call it like I see it. ;)

And a big thank you to all the fans that stopped by the Paizo booth and picked up the DVD at GenCon! It was GREAT to see that much enthusiasm! Thanks for all of the support - we're diving right into the next one.

I don't want to return the disc I have because I got it signed at Gen Con. Is there a way for a replacement disc?

Ah, that's a REAL shame. Can you keep us UK fans posted of developments. I (and my gaming group) have been looking forward to seeing this for ages. A region 1 DVD is of no use for me. Really frustrating !!

Frank

P.S. How does Region free release lock you out of "larger domestic markets" ?

P.P.S. Do any of the delightful options you mention for watching on my TV/DVD player not involve buying new hardware ?

Ben Dobyns,

Frank Cotton 22 wrote:

Frank,

"The Gamers" was sold to the hobby trade. "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising" is released by a motion picture distributor, which means that we have a good chance of seeing the movie on the shelves at places like Hollywood Video or Target. However, the movie distribution business almost always requires region encoding. For example, Amazon.com will not carry Region 0 DVDs. Neither will many other mass-market places, the very places where sales of the movie will help generate income to justify the picture's budget.

None of us at Dead Gentlemen are fans of region encoding, but until the media revolution comes, we have to play by the current rules if we want to work with production budgets that allow us to pay cast, crew, and ourselves, which of course helps us continue to make new movies!

I wish that I had a better answer for you – region encoding is something that rarely directly benefits consumers. Just like DRM, it controls access to content and assumes the the consumer is a criminal.

Now, when it comes to ways to get around region encoding, it depends entirely on what hardware you have. I suggest doing a little research. Many DVDs players, especially those sold outside of the U.S. actually have hidden region-free modes. Many websites carry lists of hardware and how to access those features. (I'm a big fan of my $99 Pioneer DVD player, which not only has a region-free mode, but automatically converts from PAL to NTSC.)

I'm sorry that the movie is not yet available in the UK – we are working hard on negotiating a good European distribution deal.

Thanks,
Ben Dobyns

Joe (and anyone else with playback issues),

Our DVD duplication and distribution are handled by Anthem Entertainment. (www.anthemdvd.com) If multiple people are having playback issues, it's important that they are made aware of the problem so it can be resolved quickly.

Just got this in the mail. I just recently went to Amazon to look at the comments.

There's an error. *All* the comments listed (22 of them) refer to some Red Shoe Diaries dvd.

I'm not sure how to contact Amazon, but someone needs to get this fixed.
