Ah you've fallen into the WOTC plastic mini craziness!!
There is always single sales & such (granted you won't get allot of farmers or something that you don't need 1,000 of, but it's cheaper & you know what your going to get)
All these collectibles games are definitely tied in to appeal to the obsessive-compulsive gamer.
If you intend to be a casual player, I recommend getting a starter, and then limiting yourself to no more than 2 boosters per set.
If you intend to be a competitive player, listen to Haldir. In fact, a lot of competitive players use the proxy concept - they use the miniatures they have on hand, test their tactics using stats they've gotten from online, and then buy singles in order to field a legal force when they're satisfied.
I've been buying boosters of collectibles materials for so long my wallet is empty, and my closet is fat of stuff I can't use. So, consider me a singles customer from now on out as well.

Does anyone know the release date for this set?
According to Scott Larabee at WotC, the release date was pushed back to November 18 (in order to coincide with the RPG material coming out this month). It was originally scheduled for release on November 7, from what I recall.

Man, I really want to keep buying minis, and I completely defended their recent announcement when it came to tweaking the line, but I hope the paint jobs on the actual minis don't look as bad as they do on the gallery that they posted on WOTC's site.

Sad thing is those are the master paints. Used on the poster checklist that comes out to promote the figures for consumers. I noticed most of those ones in the previews were all rare (again, anther dragonborn mini--rare). Maybe Wizards will relize people play dragonborn characters & they want common or uncommon figures.

The poster maps and previews are all production paints now, not masters. It has been that way since a set or two after war drums. But yes, the mini line has gone to heck.

and the minis community calls foul very quickly if the previews use master paints, so those are production paints as well

With WotC's planned changes to the mini line, we are supposedly promised better paint jobs in the future minis. The last 3 lines (including demonweb) have been crap-poor. Its almost rare to find a mini with 3 different paint colors on it or more.
Although I don't like the idea of paying the same money for less minis -- I could be convinced if they do follow through with improving the paint jobs. (Perhaps that was their plan all along? *grins* )

I must say that they are well done, and with Paizos' discount it ends up @ about $1.75 / mini so that's a BARGIN compared to regular list.
