To the person that reviewed this above. Double check you have the .Net Framework installed it asks for. You can find this in your Control Panel under Add/Remove programs. You may need to check the box at the top that says Show Windows Updates. If that is not the problem go to http://www.rpgxplorer.com and download it from there. I have downloaded this multiple times and my gaming group uses it extensively without any problems. So you either have a bad download of it or you don't have the correct software installed for it to work right. However if you have done all that and still have a problem go to their website in their forums and ask for help.
Anyone know how well this compares to DMgenie software?
I have both, and they are very different. This version of RPGXplorer is just a character sheet generator and rules reference. You can track inventory, equipment, experience, etc, but it is not designed to be used in-game like DMG. They are working on a separate DM tools version for that. They are also working on adding "Familiars, Animal Companions, Special Mounts, Mounts and other Companions" to the player version in the next update.
DMG, assuming you are familiar with it, does just about everything, but is difficult to customize some things. RPGXplorer does not do as much, but is much easier to customize. I think it is also easier to use.
You will definitely want to download the trial versions to see what they can do, and how different they are. They are both good tools, but do some different things, and some same things differently.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely download the trial versions to see what they can do and what the differneces are.
Anyone know how this compares to metacreator by alteregosoftware ?
I have both of them and I find MetaCreator far more useful simply because it supports several different systems. If we only played 3.5 around the table I might have a different perspective. Just wanted to lay the ground work on where I base my opinion.
Looking at both systems strictly for a d20 OGL 3.5 Fantasy player it would be a toss-up. From strictly a UI and layout, RPGX has the advantage of single system layout. I really dislike the RPGX UI and many of the design decisions, but I can say that is a personal decision. For me the RPGX UI is just plain hideous - but I know of others that will like its candy-colored layout.
Everything is there, which you could say the same thing about MetaCreator, PCGen, and RPGX. They all fill different niches. MC and PCGen are far more flexible, while RPGX is limited in design, but has a designed in the late 90s sort of look. PCGen and MC have the more early 90s look to them.
Personally, if RPGX drops to $19.95 then I think that is price-feature point. Right now I think it is overpriced for what it delivers.
It is like HERO Games HERO Designer. It is worth it if you play nothing but HERO Games; otherwise it just does not offer anything beyond MC or a Spreadsheet.

Is there, or is there going to be, a dataset with the new Pathfinder rules for RPGXplorer?
I have a Fighter and we are following Rise of the Runelords and we are going to use the Pathfinder changes to 3.5. I would like to have the possibility of using them in RPGXplorer (i.e., the new Fighter abilities: Bravery, Armor Training and Weapon Training in my case).
