Now there's something to wait for. The text mentions new rules, spells, etc. So this is likely going to support 3.5 rules? I can not wait. Really, I want this now.
Assuming you guys get the SRD and make the decision to move to 4E, will this be a 4E product?
Don't want to speak for the great minds at Paizo, but I don't see them being able to release 4E info in this book if they have to wait until the release of the core books from WOTC. Doesn't seem to be enough time to absorb and take in. But I've been wrong before.
Well, OGL and d20 seem to indicate that this might be the answer to the "4.0: PAIZO IS STILL UNDECIDED" thread. I still haven´t heard anything about wizards giving out the SRD or OGL yet (not that I would be in a position to hear that), so I guess this is 3.x. In another thread, someone wrote that there will probably no d20 licence, so stating that this book will be a d20 product is either a mistake or might be an indicator for 3.x. Or it is just a placeholder, if Paizo still wasn´t able to make an informed decision (probably the most important one in the history of the company, so I would hedge my bets as long as possible as well.)
Either way, there will be a new paizo hardcover for pathfinder for GenCon, and that is what counts for paizo.

Looking forward to get it in my grubby hands.
And while it's mock cover, it does look mighty cool.
Woahhhhh...Holy goodness...They are throwing all those product announcements at us (not only including this book, but also a number of GM modules, etc.) and expect us not to die from heart-attacks because of over-anticipation.
Its enough, stop announcing and give us the books ;-) (and please dont rush things - quality over quanity)
That looks fantastic, I love exploring new campaign settings. Thanks Paizo.

And to think I've been spending all this money on the locked content of Eberron when I should have been saving every penny for this gem. I have been enjoying reading (and getting ready to run) the current Pathfinder adventures and will relish getting my hands on a full setting book.
I do hope the OGL marker means that Paizo is keeping a step back from what looks like slow motion the train wreak in progress that is 4th edition D&D.
We fully anticipate this product to be a 4th Edition product. We just can't commit to it being a 4th Edition product, yet, per the reasons I think we've talked about to death.
I couldn't justify using a hardcover book long term if it wasn't 4th--and that's what 4th edition is: the long term.
The monthly Pathfinders are easy enough to convert because they're adventures, but converting a campaign setting is truly the last thing I ever want to do under any circumstance--which is why I never do that.
I pay companies to do the work for me--that's the whole point of the product! The second I have to do converting or whatnot the value and the reason for purchasing diminish significantly.
If we see 4.0 and we like 4.0 and the new OGL allows us to do what we want, this thing (or rather a couple of chapters of it) will be 4.0. If we stick with 3.5, it'll be 3.5.
The vast majority of this book will be background detail and notes.
It will cover about the same number of countries as we include in the Gazetteer (about 40 or so), but each entry in the Gaz gets something like 600 words. Each will probably get 6 pages in this book, with encounter charts, history, customs, flags, livery, etc.
The Gazetteer is a good overview of the world. This book will give you just about everything you need to set a campaign just about anywhere within that world.
A significant majority of this book will be systemless, for sure.

Cool! I really did not care one way or another, but the fact that it will be systemless, for the most part, helps out a lot. Especially since it will be 6+ months before I get 4.0 edition.

Good answer and one that will certainly ensure my preorder. A crunch-light, heavy on the backdrop campaign setting is far preferable to one with tons of npc stats and little detail on the people, places, and things that make the world come alive. Whether this ends up being 4.0 or 3.5, I'm sold.
I'm looking forward to ordering my 3 copies of this book once I know that it's going to be v.3.5 or v.Paizo.
Until the announcement is official one way or the other, I'll just wait and pray.
From Erik's post it sounds like the vast majority of the information is going to be version-neutral world information. If that's the case, I'd dare say you could get almost full value from the book for a 3.5 campaign even if it is designed for 4.0.
Looks frikkin' awesome.... just a long time to wait...
And I'm also very curious (like Mr Slaad) as to the difference between this book's contents and that in the Pathfinder Gazetteer...
Would I be correct in presuming the two products would be longer versions, but similar in concept, to the D&D Gazetteer and the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, where the former was a brief overview of the setting and the latter a much more in-depth look?
If so, I'd imagine Pathfinder DM's (well, me at least) giving the Gazetteer to players, and keeping the Campaign Setting book as "eyes only".

Yes, but in this case the short one is being written first and will be a different book, rather than just an edited-down version of the bigger book.
The Gazetteer can certain double as a player's guide to the setting, while the bigger book will have city maps and all kinds of stuff. I don't know yet how "player safe" it will be, but I imagine even that will be pretty player-friendly.
Granted, it'll be your bard-playing world-exploring players who will want it most, but I think there are a lot of those.

So, I take this that paizo still does not have a SRD for 4.0? It is pretty much impossibe to tell just now how much time it takes preparing stats for 4.0. But every day that passes makes it harder to prepare them in a timely fashion for a product due out in next August. I don´t know just how the deadlines are set, but I guess that there will be a "point of no return" for any content of the book, and I´d guess that this is not in May or June, when the 4.0 books are coming. At the moment I have the very egotistical hope that WotC fail to deliver the SRD in a timely fashion, thus defaulting this book to 3.5.
But, with most of the book being description and "fluff" anyway, I guess that the rules used really don´t matter.
I am the opposite. I love Pathfinder, but I will be going 4e, so I likely won't buy it unless it is 4e. And my subscriptions to Gamemastery and Pathfinder will likely drop after PF:2 unless PF:3 is also 4e. I'll get Curse of the Crimson Throne, for sure, but that will be my last 3.x AP (heck, I have so many of them already!!! :))
3.x or 4E, doesn't matter to me. It's Paizo and it's Pathfinder, which is the best campaign setting around currently IMHO. Since the great Mona has already stated it'll be relatively versionless, I don't see any reason for everyone who plans to play Pathfinder not to get this, regardless of their stance on 4E.
And in case Paizo marketing-types are tallying for these things - I'm in the "I'm going 4.0 but I'll be buying this product regardless of editions" category.

That is referring to the green slime btw, not Heathannson.
I'll be buying this regardless of the edition. I bought the 1st and 2nd edition Greyhawk Campaign Settings and used them plenty in my 3rd edition campaign even though they weren’t current.
If its crunch light I really don’t see the edition making that big of an impact on its usefulness.
Im definately buying this. Im in the "im staying 3.5 but buying this no matter what" category.

So, in time will we see something similar for the red planet (I know you have other planets planned but I am all about the RED...
