In my opinion, Independent is the only way to go in the modern world. It seems like both major parties are only concerned with keeping their power base intact.

The Republican Party in SD is intent on returning the state to 1900's morals and education and the Democrats are in the pockets of big agriculture so the only true option is to vote independent.
Wow, those guys are still on the air? They used to be in New Orleans when I was a kid. Back then they mostly made fun of Louisiana politics, especially our then Governor, but that was over 20 years ago.Kirth, it sounds like one of two stations that I know of. One is 93.7 FM and the show is the Walton and Johnson show. The 93.7 station is sold as the Classic Rock Station. I hope this helps.That's indeed the one! Louisiana politics at least at some points in its history (and in some ways even in the present cough cough Bobby Jindal's antiscientific commentary and background cough cough) give mockers a silver platter of things to work with.

Vaguely reminds me of the description of politics in New Crobuzon in Dragon 352: the parties are either corrupt or racially/culturally divisive or hateful.
This sort of thing also makes glad that in Canada we manage to keep Conservatives focused on the economic aspects for the most part and Liberals have a habit of campaigning on the left but governing in the centre-right.

You're absolutely correct. The Republican party has moved left the last few years, not right. There's a misconception out there (due to the wonderful mainstream press) that "right-wing extremists" have taken over the party, which is simply not true.
Fiscally, they seem to have allowed themselves to drift pretty far left because now their primary focus is on social conservatism instead, or so it seems to me. Then again, I'm a non-Christian who believes in tight fiscal discipline, which certainly colors my views on the matter, as Orthos noted:

Insightful post, this. The way I personally looked at it, selling arms to our enemies to finance drug dealers overseas while massively stepping up the domestic war on drugs was not a good model. But pay as you go for the budget, and need-basis-only surgical use of military force overseas? That I like! I'd prefer to force the government to be careful with money, rather than to allow big business and government both unchecked reign to do as they please.

OK, as a usually far left Librul, I'm really interested on how the mainstream Republican party has drifted "left." I'm not looking to snark, argue, or pick fights, I'm just really curious into your Republican ideal.
If I (or someone else) created a OTF thread, would you all contribute? If you want, I'll even promise not to post in it. :)

My opinion in politics is pretty much limited to "Leave me the freak alone, and reduce my taxes so I'm not paying to support other people." I think moral problems such as abortion, marriage, etc. should be left up to the states to individually decide amongst themselves, not decided by an arbitrary mandate from the Supreme Court. The main focus of governmental funds should be on military, as we need nothing more than we need our defenses; anything else should be kept to the minimum absolutely necessary. Neither party is doing this, but the Republicans didn't use to; not so much anymore. That is what I mean by "moved left": moved away from the idea of "as little government interference and involvement as possible".
Beyond that, I despise politics and even more so I despise anyone who has made a life out of politics. I long for the days again when becoming a politician was a duty, not a privilege, something a man or woman would do for a short time then be more than happy to leave behind and return to a life of normalcy. Instead - on both sides of the aisle - we have career politicians who have turned it into a job, and I think that's a major contributing factor to my disgust with the whole system.

However in the Polanski example, I think the man is a genius. I also believe he is a pedophile. I choose not to see his films, I choose not to contribute my money to him.Ideally, he'd be locked up, AND his royalties would go to his victim, rather than to him!
But that would require justice, something that is becoming less and less prevalent in our society today... especially so when talking about the privilaged, be it actors, politicians, or just plain old wealthy. IMO anyways. :/

The main reason I'm registered as a Democrat isn't because I think they're always right, but because I want to participate in the primaries (and in New York you have to be registered in a party to do so). I consider primary elections to be considerably more important than the general elections, because greater participation in primaries is the only antidote to the "lesser of two evils" syndrome in politics.

Ugh, I've always been a lefty, but I'm registered as a Republican for the same reason: to vote in the primaries. Registering as a Democrat or Independent has zero practical application in SW FL; many positions have no Democratic challenger and I can't remember the last time I saw an Independent on the ballot.
