The weird thing is that his daughters suggested that Mum gets a flat just in case, apparently because of his previous behaviour with them, not because of anything Mum's done!

Charles, you're right. We'll have to see what happens!

Yikes! I hope you mom is OK--what his daughters said sounds kinda scary.

The thing that sucks most right now: having the only person who completely understands me and cares about me living a thousand miles away and only reachable by telephone.

I'm an Epic Flumph!

Spoiler:
Today is my mom's birthday. She would have been 57. It's been two years last month since she died. It still made me sad when I saw the date today.

I'm sorry to hear that. *hugs* in advance, so I don't forget later.

And thanks for the hugs and sympathy to the rest of you too. I still feel sad, but it helps having friends who care.

So, my cousin (who I used to babysit) is about to ship off to Iraq, after meeting the love of her life, serving a few tours over in Afghanistan away from him, getting married recently and thinking that they were going to be stateside for a while.

Since the girl’s been in the Army she’s been in Kosovo and Afghanistan and now she’s going back into the s++*. C’mon people, give the girl a break and send her somewhere safe, and send her hubby with her. These two kids have been split by wars across the world, finally getting back in the same place long enough to settle down, and just end up separated again. Here’s hoping my favorite SSG stays safe.

I might even miss her deployment party because of work. :|

My mom's birthday was Sept 2nd. She would have been 82 this year. I still miss her a lot, and wish she was still here.

{sniffs, wipes tear} Thanks everyone. {Hugs back}

On to something less depressing that sucks: PUBLIC BATHROOMS!

I readily admit that I am dirt and germ-phobic and am overly sensitive about smell. However, there are some people who should be charged with felonious assault against air-quality. A few days ago my eyes stung when I walked in.

I just want my own private bathroom at work. I would give up half of my office for it.

Sorry to hear that HD. We had a "wandering" male cat, even though he was neutered, and he's disappear for a week at a time. I hope your cat comes home.

she was strictly house cat, and has zero survival instincts that I was ever able to ascertain. Also, she doesn't have a collar beyond her flea collar. And, the place I adopted her from assured me she was spayed.

I live in a small complex, and put up a sign, but I'm not confident about this at all...

Do you have any Korean neighbors?

Usually they try to find some small dark place to hide. Hopefully she'll turn up in a day or two. I hope that you find her soon.

I'll bet she's either been picked up by someone good at catching cats (even a timid cat, when hungry will let itself get got by a soothing voice and a waved can of food) and taken inside or else she's hiding in someone's garage or attic.

Get a slap stapler and litter the area with lost cat posters.

You're thinking of dog, not cat, and even with dogmeat it is usually only older men who eat it (to improve stamina). The younger generation doesn't eat it much at all.

Tarren,

Spoiler:
Back in NY I used to have a lot of Korean friends (younger guys, none of whom ate dogs, or pets of any kind). For some reason they used to think it was hilarious to say things like "Hey, let's go out for hamster tonight!" The joke was along those lines, playing on the perceived stereotype, not the actuality.

I figured you were joking. Still, the stereotype is common enough that it deserves to be countered with fact. (One Canadian immigration document even included advice for new immigrants along the lines of "city animals are not to be eaten".) ... Seriously, what kind of person eats cat? That would be like eating cow or something. Disgusting. Moooo.

Being here at SCAD has reminded me of the fact that I will never get the chance to learn from Jeremy Mullins. I looked him up again, just to see what kind of tributes the guy inspired, and I found this video, from Rashad Doucet. It has to be the saddest thing I've ever seen.

I received a text from my mum yesterday about my uncle Robert. He’s got his test results, and they are relatively good news. He does have prostate cancer, but it’s not elsewhere, and apparently that type of cancer is treatable according to mum. Given how much he’s smoked and drunk, that’s amazing.

Apparently my mum’s neighbour had had a major stroke (but is still alive) when she phoned me that time. However, my sister saw her last week and apparently mum’s not been very happy for a long while… and was(/is ?) due to see a lawyer some time soon. Not good news.

That does suck, Mr. Shiny. Can you go on a "virtual date" for her birthday?

Qadira (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Roleplaying Game, Campaign Setting, Companion, Battles Case Subscriber)

My wife had landed a job she loved with a bakery/catering company. Two months later they lay her off. The economy is so bad they literally have no work for her, as no one is catering anything. So now she is back to schlepping the want ads. My business is so bad I am now praying that they will hold off laying me off until Christmas is over, rather than hoping they'll keep me on through the winter.

I have an evaluation of two interviews of people in my eventual field due tomorrow. The draft of the twelve page paper I need to write based on those interviews is due the day after that. I haven't got any interviews yet. I don't need to explain more.

Oh, and I've got two chapters worth of Calculus problems due tomorrow, Chemistry homework due Tuesday and two prelabs and a postlab due Wednesday.

I hope things pick up at your business and you don't have to worry about getting laid off.

I missed a payment on my car insurance, and made it up the next month, which is something I've done before and it's always been fine. This time, they canceled my policy, and I didn't realize it for a month. Now the DMV wants to suspend my registration, even though I've gotten new insurance, for letting it lapse.

Wow. I hope they don't suspend your registration. Hopefully, all you'll have to do is fill out a bunch of paperwork to verify that you were covered by insurance.

The trouble is, I wasn't covered by insurance. I just didn't know it.

It means I'm going to have to grovel at my old insurance company, which I'm already angry at, to take me back and see if they can reinstate my policy without a coverage gap.

If that doesn't work, I can avoid the suspension by forking over a large sum of money to the DMV, which I will probably do and then see if I have a small claims court case against the old insurance agent for not notifying me sufficiently that my coverage was being cancelled.

Something similar happened to my sister. But the insurance company cashed her check (probably automated), so she brought in her canceled check to the Clerk of Courts and had it cleared up.

Hope you can get it cleared up easily, cheaply, and quickly.

We shall see.

On the payment thing, the way I found my policy was really and truly cancelled and I needed to do something about it was they cut me a check that said "refund due to cancellation", returning the last month's payment I had sent them.

Blue screen death.
Something has gone wrong with my home PC (which is the one which had internet access), and I am currently reliant upon public library computers and internet cafes for trying to even remotely keep up to date with things and for job search purposes...
Hoping they fix it soon...

It sucks when layoffs happen, it double sucks when they are close friends and mentors and it triple sucks when their work is given to me and my over-burdened department.

Being sick for nearly three weeks straight. From the flu to sinus congestion and finally the migraine that would not go away, I have been ill for a good part of this month. It was a horrible nightmare. Even now my head still has phantom pains and my stomach is rebelling against food. I can't wait for this to be over.

Sympathy to you Alleynbard. Partly stress-related, partly cold-related, I'm not sleeping well or feeling very good here myself at the moment, although I doubt it's physically as bad for me as what you describe you've been through. :(
