I'm learning that it works better for me to just get the words in the document when I write. Then I can go back and edit later. I worked on something where I edited as I went along and totally threw it out because I over-wrote the piece. It was horrendous, and I had to apologize to my critique group when they reviewed it. Obviously, what works for me doesn't necessarily work for anyone else. I was just sharing. :)I try to just get it on paper first, but I can't go more than a couple pages or so without making at least two editing passes. With NaNoWriMo, I just started with a two sentence idea and two very vague characters... normally, I like at least of page of 'hooky' backstory, a half-dozen conflict ideas, and a pretty complete outline.
If I do this next year, I will plan ahead a little bit. At least I'll come up with a concrete idea of the plot and characters.
Hopefully, it has been a learning experience for you, and I'm impressed with anyone who does it.

Joanna and Dean decided to give in to their feelings for each other, but were stopped when Joanna was mauled by a pack of rabid chihuahuas. Robert was struggling with his failing health, not realizing that his condition was actually caused by a virus created by the evil Dr. Dolots, Dolittles evil twin. Meanwhile, Sam and Ellen realized that penguins....No, wait! That's my soap opera.
Today I am going to get some housework done, and work on my submission for the Pathfinder Society open call. My working title is "The Lost Chronicle." Later I'm taking my wife to see "The Blind Side."Good luck!
What's "The Blind Side" about?
"The Blind Side" depicts the remarkable true story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own.
