The rule does not make any statement about whether any particular reference or comparison to Adolf Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that the likelihood of such a reference or comparison arising increases as the discussion progresses. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued[4] that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact.
The law and its corollaries would not apply to discussions covering genocide, propaganda, or other mainstays of the Nazi Germany, nor, more debatably, to discussion of other totalitarian regimes, since a Nazi comparison in those circumstances is understandable.
Seems to me that in certain situations a hitler/nazi reference can be appropriate and applicable to the discussion, and people tend to invoke godwin's law to avoid discussion of valid points more than it is used appropriately.
EDIT: posted before i finished reading article...it went on to state:
However, Godwin's Law itself can be abused, as a distraction, diversion or even censorship, that fallaciously miscasts an opponent's argument as hyperbole, especially if the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate. A 2005 Reason magazine article argued that Godwin's Law is often misused to ridicule even valid comparisons.[7]

Meh, sometimes a hitler references is necessary and applicable. Doesn't do anything for a debate when your "opposing party" chooses to try and brand it a godwin's law violation rather than respond to it.
It occurs to me that somebody might see my avatar and draw the quite mistaken conclusion that I am IRL some kind of skinhead neo-nazi. I shave my head because razor blades are still cheaper than haircuts, plus the wife likes it.

Stop defaming the Superman. He can leap tall buildings in a single bound and his creator was a Canadian. I dont care if the entire Superman concept - son of an advanced civilization - Fortress of Solitude containing all knowledge - was ripped off from a Novel by an Australian who had his book serialized on Radio in the USA a year before the Creator of Superman rebooted 'leaps tall buildings in grey undies' into Son of Krypton.
Created the Modern Superman while Alone in bed one night my arse...YOu IP Thieving Scum!
